Lewis Hamilton mocked by F1 rivals as ‘Kardashian effect’ takes hold

Last Updated on April 7 2026, 11:37 pm

“Lewis. Keeping up with the Hamiltons.” was Esteban Ocon’s blunt, and telling response during a Q&A on the official Formula 1 YouTube channel, when drivers were asked which of their peers was most likely to appear on a reality TV show. The remark, a clear nod to Keeping Up with the Kardashians, immediately sparked laughter across the room, with voices chiming in: “He’s been on it!”

‘Iykyk,’ added reigning world champion Lando Norris, social media shorthand for ‘if you know, you know’, as the reaction from the panel snowballed during the same segment on F1’s YouTube show.

Even Pierre Gasly looked around in amusement, wondering why everyone behind the camera was laughing while the wider group clearly understood the reference.

The punchline was obvious: Lewis Hamilton’s relationship with Kim Kardashian has become a talking point in the paddock, and an increasingly humorous one at that.

From rumour to paddock-wide joke

For weeks, speculation had been building, but it has now effectively been confirmed in the public eye. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is dating one of the most recognisable figures on the planet, and this has quickly become common knowledge in the Formula 1 paddock.

With hundreds of millions of followers across platforms, Kardashian’s global reach means this is no ordinary relationship story within the sport. It represents a collision between elite motorsport and mainstream celebrity culture, and it has not gone unnoticed among Hamilton’s peers.

During a pre-season media gathering tied to the 2026 campaign, George Russell even approached his former Mercedes teammate directly to ask about his love life. Hamilton’s response was simply a knowing smile, offering little but confirming plenty as the subject continued to circulate.

By the time the official F1 “Fill in the Blanks” Q&A was recorded and published on its YouTube channel, the relationship had clearly become an open secret within the paddock.

A rare moment: Hamilton as the punchline

The reaction is notable not just for the jokes themselves, but for who they are aimed at. For more than a decade, Hamilton has been one of Formula 1’s defining figures: a dominant force whose presence commanded respect across the grid.

In this moment, however, he is repositioned as part of the entertainment, rather than the intimidating benchmark.

Ocon’s comment was delivered with a smile, yet it resonated because multiple drivers immediately understood and built on the joke. It was not an isolated instance of humour, but rather a shared narrative reinforced by the reactions of Norris and others, including Fernando Alonso and Gabriel Bortoleto. All of these drivers appeared to be aligned in their thinking during the segment.

The Kardashian effect in F1

The reality TV reference reflects something broader about the sport’s current identity. Formula 1 has increasingly blurred the line between competition and entertainment, and Hamilton has long been at the centre of that evolution. His global profile has always extended beyond racing, but this latest development takes that crossover to a new level.

His connection to Kardashian amplifies the scale of attention, bringing with it a different kind of spotlight that transcends traditional motorsport audiences. In this context, the paddock’s reaction seems almost inevitable as one of its biggest stars becomes part of a narrative that extends far beyond the track.

A shift in perception?

The lingering question is whether this is simply harmless banter or whether it reveals something more about Hamilton’s standing within the sport.

There was a time when such open jokes would have been less likely, particularly at the height of his dominance. However, a new generation of drivers now seems far more comfortable with that kind of humour. Almost like there’s less reverence, but also that he is no longer merely a driver.

For now, the tone remains light-hearted, but the message is clear. Lewis Hamilton is still one of Formula 1’s central figures, but in 2026, his identity will not be defined solely by his on-track performance. He is also part of the wider spectacle, and, as the F1 YouTube segment showed, even his rivals are well aware of this.

NEXT ARTICLE – Max Verstappen Considering Paid 2027 Sabbatical Amid F1 Frustrations

One thing was crystal clear at the recent 2026 Formula One Japanese Grand Prix, and that is Max Verstappen is a very unhappy man. In the FIA press conference he banished a journalist from The Guardian, refusing to answer questions until the offending pork pie hat had left the room.

Verstappen claims Giles Richards had ‘laughed in his face’ following the season finale in Abu Dhabi last season. Having fallen short by just 14 points of becoming only the second F1 driver to claim five consecutive titles, Richards reminded Max of his red mist in Spain where he appeared to ram the Mercedes of George Russell.

The resulting 10 second penalty issued by the race stewards probably cost Verstappen in the region of 9 points that day, so it was not a deciding incident for his season anyway. Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies is reported to have had words with his star driver following corporate pressure from Austria over the image he was portraying of the Red Bull brand.

Max reprimanded for dismissing journalists

Thats in itself is a bizarre tale, given that Red Bull energy drinks brand, the extreme sports they have supported and the rebellious attitude of the Red Bull F1 team have always been associated with kicking over the traces. How times have changed since the death of Red Bull founder Didi Mateschitz. But we digress.

As if to make matters worse, Vertsappen had his worst racing weekend of the season. He was out qualified for the second time by new team mate Isack Hadjar and dumped out of the top ten shootout by rookie Arvid Lindblad in the Red Bull sister car.
