Mercedes activates Plan B for W17 as major 2026 upgrade targets Malaysia or Singapore – Mercedes has changed its development strategy for the W17 after a difficult first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with the team now preparing a further upgrade package rather than completely switching its resources to the 2027 car.
The original plan was straightforward. Once the opening part of the championship had been completed, Mercedes intended to wind down W17 development and concentrate its technical resources and budget on the W18, which will be built around the next generation of Formula 1 regulations.
According to AutoRacer, however, the competitive situation has forced a rethink. Mercedes now intends to bring several developments that had already been designed and evaluated through CFD and wind-tunnel programmes, but which were initially expected to remain unused on the current car.
Mercedes changes W17 development strategy
The original decision was based on Mercedes believing that it had built a sufficiently large performance advantage over its rivals to justify switching resources towards 2027.
That calculation has become less comfortable.
Mercedes has lost a significant number of points during the first half of the season, with power-unit reliability problems affecting both George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. At the same time, Ferrari has made progress while McLaren has returned to the front of the field.
The result is that Mercedes’ advantage in the Constructors’ Championship is substantial, but no longer provides the same margin for error.
The team’s lead over Ferrari is around 70 points, while Ferrari is also expected to introduce a further power-unit step later in the season. That makes protecting the championship lead increasingly important.
What is Mercedes’ Plan B?
Mercedes’ revised approach does not mean abandoning its 2027 programme or developing an entirely new W17 specification from scratch.
Instead, the Brackley-based operation is understood to be putting into production components that had already been developed during the preceding months. These parts had originally been earmarked for the shelf as Mercedes sought to contain costs and maximise its investment in the W18.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that additional developments are coming.
“We will bring some updates to the track, we are carefully monitoring what we can do; in terms of budget cap, we are in a good position. We have tried to focus the updates a little more on the second half of the season, we’ll see if that will be enough.”
The comments indicate that Mercedes is deliberately concentrating its remaining W17 development effort on the second half of the campaign.
The significance is that this appears to be more than routine trackside optimisation. According to AutoRacer’s reconstruction of Mercedes’ plans, the additional development represents the alternative strategy that had been prepared should the championship situation demand it.
That situation has now materialised.
Zandvoort brings the first step, but not the main package
Mercedes is expected to introduce smaller developments at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, although these are not considered to be the major second-half package.
Instead, the initial changes are understood to be relatively minor developments that can provide additional data and potentially prepare the W17 for the larger aerodynamic and performance step still to come.
The timing is significant because major Formula 1 upgrades require substantial manufacturing lead times. Mercedes could not simply decide after the Hungarian Grand Prix to produce a completely new package and expect it to appear immediately.
The team’s decision to activate previously designed components therefore provides a way of accelerating the response without abandoning its 2027 development programme.
Malaysia or Singapore: when will the major W17 upgrade arrive?
The biggest question now concerns the timing of the main package.
The original target was Singapore, but the 2026 calendar has created another possibility. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been relocated to Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and will take place from October 2-4, immediately before the Singapore Grand Prix from October 9-11.
This creates an important technical consideration for Mercedes.
The Malaysian weekend is scheduled as a conventional Grand Prix weekend, providing significantly more practice running for evaluating a major package. Singapore, by contrast, is one of the 2026 Sprint events, meaning teams have less free-practice time to understand a substantially revised car and optimise its set-up.
For that reason, Mercedes is reportedly considering bringing the main W17 package forward to Sepang.
For now, Singapore remains the reported target, but Malaysia represents a logical alternative if the development and manufacturing schedule allows Mercedes to accelerate production.
The decision could ultimately be made during the summer break.
Why the W17 still matters to Mercedes
Mercedes’ change of direction illustrates how quickly Formula 1 development strategies can change when championship positions tighten.
The W18 remains the long-term priority, particularly with the technical direction of the 2027 car already demanding substantial resources. But abandoning the W17 too early could prove costly if Ferrari continues to close the gap.
The immediate objective is therefore not necessarily to transform the W17 into a radically different car. Instead, Mercedes appears to be using development work that has already been completed to extract additional performance while protecting its championship position.
The next major indicator will come at Zandvoort. The smaller updates should provide the first indication of how Mercedes intends to develop the car during the final phase of the season.
If the larger package arrives at Sepang or Singapore as expected, it will also provide a clearer answer to the most important question: whether Mercedes’ decision to activate Plan B can keep Ferrari and McLaren at arm’s length without compromising its preparations for the W18.
