Honda hits target with new Aston Martin F1 engine ahead of Zandvoort

Honda clears new Aston Martin F1 engine for Zandvoort after hitting key target – Aston Martin will head into the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season with a major new weapon after Honda confirmed its upgraded power unit has successfully completed factory testing ahead of its planned debut at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Honda chief engineer Shintaro Orihara says the manufacturer has achieved its internal target, raising hopes that the new engine can build on Aston Martin’s significant aerodynamic gains.

The timing is crucial for Aston Martin. The team endured a difficult first half of the campaign before introducing a major package of car upgrades at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Honda’s new power unit is now scheduled to follow at Zandvoort on August 23, giving Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll another opportunity to close the gap to the midfield. Honda had previously confirmed that an updated power unit would arrive at the Dutch Grand Prix.

 

Honda reaches its target with new Aston Martin power unit

Honda’s Shintaro Orihara confirmed the latest development in a video released by the manufacturer, although he stopped short of revealing the precise performance figures.

“I cannot reveal the exact figures, but we have achieved our internal target,” Orihara said.

That statement is significant given the pressure on Honda following Aston Martin’s difficult start to its first season under the new 2026 power-unit regulations. Honda is now operating as Aston Martin’s works engine partner after ending its previous relationship with Red Bull and Racing Bulls at the conclusion of 2025.

The upgraded unit has already been put through a track running programme ahead of its official race debut, allowing Honda to gather additional data before Zandvoort.

 

Honda keeps the biggest changes secret

Honda is keeping most of the technical details under wraps, but Orihara did reveal one important area of development.

The power unit’s pre-chamber has been modified with the aim of accelerating the combustion process. Beyond that, Honda has worked through what Orihara described as a “long list of improvements for engine performance.”

The Japanese manufacturer is therefore not presenting the upgrade as a single-power boost change. Instead, the work has covered multiple areas of the power unit as Honda attempts to extract more performance from its 2026 design.

That matters because the new regulations have placed unprecedented emphasis on the electrical side of the power unit, with the internal-combustion engine and electric motor playing a much more balanced role. Honda itself describes 2026 as a major new challenge with Aston Martin under the revised regulations.

 

Aston Martin finally has momentum after Hungary

Honda’s engine upgrade arrives after Aston Martin finally introduced its first major car development package of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The team brought a substantial collection of aerodynamic and chassis changes to the AMR26 after deliberately pursuing a larger upgrade strategy rather than introducing smaller developments throughout the year. Reuters reported that the package included a new chassis, aerodynamic improvements and weight reduction as Aston Martin attempted to recover from a miserable first half of the season.

The approach carries obvious risks. While rival teams continued to develop their cars in smaller steps, Aston Martin allowed its performance deficit to grow before introducing a much larger package.

The first signs in Hungary were encouraging, with the team showing a noticeable improvement after spending much of the season struggling to escape Q1.

 

Zandvoort becomes Aston Martin’s real test

The Dutch Grand Prix will provide the first meaningful indication of whether Aston Martin and Honda can turn those developments into sustained performance.

Aston Martin now has a significantly revised car and Honda is bringing an updated power unit specifically for the post-summer-break phase. Honda previously said it wanted to use the races before the upgrade to gather energy-deployment data that could be carried into later events.

That makes Zandvoort more than simply the next race on the calendar. It is the first opportunity to see whether Aston Martin’s aggressive development strategy has genuinely changed its competitive position.

Honda is confident enough to say its internal target has been achieved. The stopwatch at Zandvoort will reveal whether that confidence translates into the performance Aston Martin desperately needs.
