Hamilton’s Ferrari future back in focus
Lewis Hamilton’s future has once again become a talking point ahead of Ferrari’s home race at Monza, with speculation increasing over whether the Briton could extend his stay beyond his current Ferrari agreement.
The situation is more settled than some reports have suggested. Hamilton confirmed earlier this year that he remains under contract with Ferrari for at least the 2027 season and said he was still highly motivated to continue racing in Formula 1.
However, recent reports have raised the possibility of an additional extension that could keep Hamilton at Ferrari into 2028.
According to recent reporting, Ferrari has not yet officially confirmed such an extension. Nevertheless, Monza could provide a significant stage for any announcement, particularly given the importance of the Italian Grand Prix to the Scuderia.
Ferrari has already secured its other key pieces
The driver market has changed considerably in recent months, reducing the number of elite seats potentially available for 2027 and beyond.
Charles Leclerc has committed his future to Ferrari on a multi-year agreement that is understood to take him well beyond 2028. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen has committed to Red Bull through 2030, while reigning 2025 world champion Lando Norris has signed a new McLaren deal that runs until at least 2030.
That leaves Hamilton as one of the few major pieces whose longer-term future has continued to attract attention.
For Ferrari, retaining Hamilton alongside Leclerc would provide continuity during a crucial period for the team. The 2026 regulations have introduced a major technical reset, making driver experience and stability particularly valuable as teams develop their next-generation cars.
Hamilton has also enjoyed a considerably stronger campaign than his difficult first season in red. His victory in Barcelona represented his first Grand Prix win for Ferrari, while his performances in 2026 have placed him firmly back in the championship conversation.
Bearman’s Ferrari opportunity could be delayed
A longer Hamilton stay would have consequences elsewhere in Ferrari’s driver programme, particularly for Oliver Bearman.
The young Briton remains part of Ferrari’s wider development structure while racing for Haas. He made a major impression when he substituted for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari during the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and subsequently secured his full-time F1 opportunity with Haas.
Bearman is expected to remain with Haas for the foreseeable future, but a Ferrari promotion would become more complicated if Hamilton continues beyond 2027.
That does not necessarily mean Bearman’s Ferrari opportunity would disappear. Instead, the timing of any promotion could become the key issue.
Ferrari’s decision would also have to balance Hamilton’s experience and proven record against the long-term value of promoting one of its most promising young drivers.
Monza could provide the perfect announcement stage
Ferrari has historically used its home event to generate significant attention, making Monza a natural backdrop for any major announcement concerning Hamilton.
The timing would also carry considerable symbolism. Ferrari’s Italian Grand Prix is one of the biggest events on the F1 calendar, while Hamilton’s career has become closely linked with Michael Schumacher since he equalled the German’s record of seven world championships.
Hamilton has already matched another significant Schumacher milestone by becoming a Ferrari race winner at Barcelona, making any announcement at Monza potentially even more fitting.
For now, however, Ferrari has not officially confirmed a new contract beyond Hamilton’s existing commitment.
With the Italian Grand Prix approaching, the question is therefore less about whether Hamilton will be racing for Ferrari in 2027 — something he has already confirmed — and more about whether the Scuderia is ready to make his stay even longer.
