Kimi Antonelli explains Mercedes’ approach to the title battle as his World Championship dream grows – The 19-year-old Mercedes driver says he is confident he can win the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. However, he is determined to ensure his title fight with teammate George Russell does not descend into the kind of internal conflict that previously defined the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the team.
The 19-year-old has emerged as the standout performer of the season so far, winning four consecutive races after Russell claimed victory in the opening round in Melbourne.
This success has made Antonelli the championship leader and strengthened Mercedes’ position at the top of both world championship standings.
Antonelli wants Mercedes harmony despite title fight
As the season progresses, many observers expect the pressure inside Mercedes to increase as both drivers fight for the same prize. However, Antonelli insists that maintaining team harmony remains a priority.
“We are both in an excellent position. We both have a great car, and we both want to win. During the races, we naturally want to treat each other fairly. We don’t want to cause chaos in the team, and of course, we don’t want to upset Toto,” he told RTL and Sky Sports Germany.
The Italian explained that, although both drivers are determined to beat each other on the track, they also understand their responsibilities to the wider Mercedes project.
“When we race, of course we race to win. We want to be the best, and of course we race for ourselves — but also for the team.”
These comments will likely be welcomed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who spent years managing the increasingly bitter rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg during the team’s dominant success in the hybrid era.

Four consecutive wins have transformed the championship picture
Russell started the season strongly with a victory in Australia, but Antonelli has since taken control of the championship battle.
The young Italian responded by winning the next four races, extending his lead in the standings and further enhancing his reputation as one of Formula 1’s brightest talents.
Having already impressed in his rookie season in 2025, achieving seventh place in the drivers’ championship with 150 points, Antonelli has taken another significant stride forward this year.
His recent run of victories has established him as Mercedes’ benchmark driver and a favourite for the world title.
“I know I can win,” says the Mercedes star.
Despite his age and relative lack of experience compared to many championship contenders, Antonelli has no doubts about his ability to fight for Formula 1’s biggest prize.
However, the Mercedes driver is keen to avoid becoming distracted by championship calculations at this stage of the season.
“I don’t want to think about it and lose my focus.”
Instead, he says, his approach is to focus on individual race weekends rather than becoming consumed by the title standings.
‘I don’t want to drive races while thinking about the championship. The season is still so long. I’ll continue driving as if I have nothing to lose. Because I can’t lose anything I haven’t achieved yet.’
This mindset has been a key factor in his impressive rise through the ranks of Formula 1.
Mercedes and family helping Antonelli stay grounded
Antonelli also admitted that securing his first Formula 1 victory in Shanghai evoked an emotional response that took him by surprise for a moment.
The Italian revealed that both Mercedes and his family played an important role in helping him stay focused after reaching that milestone.
“The emotions overwhelmed me a little,” Antonelli admitted.
‘But the team helped me to collect myself again. Then we focused on the next race, and of course, I also have a great family who make sure I stay grounded and never lose sight of the big goal.’
With Mercedes currently having the strongest package on the grid, and Antonelli performing consistently well, the teenager’s first World Championship now seems more like a realistic possibility than a distant ambition.
The greater challenge for Mercedes may be ensuring that the growing title fight between Antonelli and Russell remains competitive, while avoiding the damaging internal battles that once threatened to divide the team during its most successful era.
