Lewis Hamilton makes Ferrari future clear with strong retirement message in Montreal

Ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has delivered a firm response to growing speculation surrounding his future in the sport.

During media duties, the Ferrari driver made his intentions unmistakably clear, insisting he has no plans to step away from the sport, despite mounting questions over his long-term future.

“Many people are trying to send me into retirement, but I’m not even thinking about it,” he said. “I’ll be here for quite a while yet. Get used to it.”

This statement attracted widespread attention across the Formula 1 paddock and on social media. Formula 1’s official channels responded: “Lewis Hamilton isn’t going anywhere”, accompanied by a heart emoji.

Hamilton addresses Ferrari future amid mounting scrutiny

Hamilton’s comments come at the end of another challenging season for the British driver, following his high-profile move to Scuderia Ferrari. After a challenging debut season with the Italian team in 2025, the 41-year-old is currently fifth in the drivers’ standings with 51 points.

The contrast with the current championship leader, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, has intensified the scrutiny surrounding Hamilton’s performances. Antonelli, who replaced Hamilton at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, has already amassed 100 points this season, despite being only 19 years old.

Hamilton’s most recent Grand Prix victory was at the 2024 race on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and his last world championship was in 2020, before the era of Max Verstappen’s and Lando Norris’s dominance.

Nevertheless, Hamilton appeared relaxed and optimistic ahead of one of the most successful venues of his career.

Memories of Montreal remain special for Hamilton

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve holds enormous emotional significance for him. It was there, in 2007, that he secured the first Grand Prix victory of his Formula 1 career during his rookie season.

Nineteen years later, he returns to Montreal as a seven-time world champion and 105-time Grand Prix winner, still carrying vivid memories of those early successes.

He has won the Canadian Grand Prix seven times, in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Speaking ahead of the race weekend, he described the atmosphere in Montreal as electric and praised the circuit as one of the finest on the Formula 1 calendar.

The British driver also spoke emotionally about the support he has received from his family this weekend, revealing that his mother will be attending the race.

Hamilton opens up about emotional family support

He explained that it had been difficult to convince his mother to travel to races in recent years, with most of her appearances limited to the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit.

“I’ve been trying to get my mother to come on tour with me for a while now,” he said. “But in recent years, she just hasn’t wanted to travel.”

However, he revealed that she had recently joined him in China earlier this season, describing it as one of the best experiences they had shared.

“She then asked me if she could come to Montreal,” he added. “Having support from your family definitely makes a difference to your weekend.”

Despite the retirement rumours surrounding him, the Ferrari driver also hinted that he is already thinking long-term.

“I’m already thinking about what’s next and planning for the next five years,” Hamilton explained. “But yes, I intend to stay here for a while longer.”

Hamilton later reinforced this message with an Instagram post from the Montreal paddock bearing the caption: “Get used to it.”

His statement is significant not only because it quells immediate retirement speculation, but also because it highlights Ferrari’s long-term commitment to the British driver.

Questions around Hamilton’s future have intensified amid Ferrari’s inconsistent performances and the emergence of younger talent across the grid. However, the veteran driver’s latest remarks strongly suggest that he is still fully motivated to compete at the highest level, officially.
