Hamilton tipped to announce F1 retirement at Silverstone amid Ferrari pressure say Italian & Dutch sources

Following a challenging debut season with Scuderia Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has demonstrated signs of improvement in the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season. However, former Grand Prix winner Ralf Schumacher believes that the seven-time world champion should consider retiring at the end of the year. Further, sources from Italian, repeated by Dutch reporters, suggest Hamilton may well announce his retirement from the sport at Silverstone this year.

Hamilton is under contract with Ferrari until the end of the 2026 season, although there have been reports of an option that could extend the deal to 2027. Nevertheless, Schumacher argued that now would be the right moment for Hamilton — as well as Fernando Alonso — to step aside and allow younger drivers to take their place.

Speaking on Sky Germany’s Backstage Pit Lane podcast, Schumacher said: ‘It’s time — and I have to say the same about Fernando Alonso. Hamilton and Alonso have had a wonderful time in Formula 1. But now it’s time for both of them to vacate their cockpits at the end of the year and give young people a chance.

The former Toyota and Williams driver acknowledged that Hamilton’s form has improved compared to last season, but questioned whether the Briton can consistently match his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, over the course of a whole season.

“He’s in a slightly better position this year,” Schumacher explained. “But I believe that in the long run he will have no chance against Leclerc.”

Schumacher backs Oliver Bearman for a future Ferrari seat

He also pointed to Oliver Bearman as a possible long-term successor to Hamilton at Ferrari.

The highly rated British driver currently races for the Haas F1 Team after graduating to a full-time Formula 1 seat, and Schumacher believes that Bearman has already demonstrated enough to warrant consideration for a future promotion to Ferrari.

“Hamilton has achieved everything there is to achieve in Formula 1; he’s one of the most successful drivers ever,” Schumacher continued. “He deserves it, and what he’s done again this year — this kind of comeback — is fantastic. But everything comes to an end eventually, except for sausages.”

He then added, ‘Oliver Bearman deserves the chance to drive a Ferrari. If he gets the chance, I believe he’ll even be a challenge for Charles Leclerc. I’m pretty sure of that.”

Bearman has impressed many in the paddock since becoming a full-time Formula 1 driver, and the British driver is currently sitting inside the top ten in the drivers’ standings in the early stages of the season.

Dutch media and Italian sources with links Hamilton suggest a possible announcement at Silverstone

Alongside Schumacher’s comments, fresh speculation has emerged from sections of the Dutch media suggesting that Hamilton could announce his retirement plans during the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone later this year. TJ13 has also heard similar rumours from Italian sources close to Ferrari and Hamilton.

Currently, neither Hamilton nor Ferrari has confirmed such a move, and the rumours remain entirely speculative it seems, but  Nevertheless, the reports have added further intrigue to Hamilton’s long-term future, as the spotlight remains on Ferrari’s progress and the direction of the team heading into Formula 1’s next technical cycle.

Silverstone would be a fitting venue for any major announcement, given Hamilton’s long-standing success at his home Grand Prix and his special relationship with British motorsport fans.

For now, Hamilton is focusing on improving Ferrari’s competitiveness alongside Leclerc, as the team attempts to close the gap to the front of the field in time for the 2026 campaign.

Hamilton has repeatedly insisted in recent months that he remains motivated by Ferrari’s long-term project and the challenge of helping return the team to championship-winning form.

Hamilton’s future remains one of Formula 1’s biggest stories

His arrival at Ferrari was one of the most significant driver moves in modern Formula 1 history, uniting the sport’s most successful driver with its most iconic team. Although the partnership has yet to deliver consistent championship success, Hamilton’s commercial value, global profile and experience remain hugely important assets for Ferrari.

At the same time, Formula 1 is entering a transitional phase, with younger drivers increasingly taking on leading roles across the grid. Therefore, discussions surrounding Hamilton and Alonso’s futures are likely to continue throughout the remainder of the season, especially as teams begin shaping their long-term plans under the evolving regulations.

Whether Hamilton chooses to continue beyond 2026 or decides to retire, his eventual announcement will mark the end of one of Formula 1’s most notable careers.

  1. I’d buy into such a rumor only if it came from AMuS, i.e., the most reliable single publication for F1-reporting.

Otherwise, Hamilton’s words are what matter & since he’s said on several occasions that he’s motivated to continue racing in F1 beyond this season, he’ll almost certainly continue until at least next season’s end.

He’ll continue as long as he’s motivated & so does Alonso.
