Norris and Piastri react to Verstappen F1 exit story

Norris and Piastri react to Verstappen exit rumours as debate over F1’s future grows – Lando Norris has warned that Formula 1 would suffer significantly if Max Verstappen were to leave the sport, describing the idea as both a “loss” and a “disgrace” for the championship.

The McLaren driver and reigning world champion was speaking amid growing speculation over Verstappen’s long-term future in F1. Oscar Piastri also weighed in, saying that drivers want to compete against the very best and that Verstappen has set the standard for performance in the modern era.

These comments to the Guardian have been made at a time of heightened uncertainty surrounding Verstappen’s position in the sport, with discussions being fuelled by the Red Bull driver’s recent criticism of the direction of new regulations and Formula 1’s competitiveness.

Piastri emphasised Verstappen’s consistent excellence, noting his presence at the forefront of Formula 1 for almost a decade.

“We as drivers want to compete against the best and try to prove ourselves against the best,” Piastri said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Australian emphasised that Verstappen had proven his qualities “over the past ten years” and had been the benchmark in the premier class of motorsport “over the last five or six years”.

Piastri’s comments reflect a broader sentiment in the paddock that, regardless of team allegiance or championship battles, Verstappen remains the driver everyone measures themselves against. The Australian driver emphasised that facing the strongest possible opposition is crucial for a driver’s development and competitive spirit.

Norris warns of ‘disgrace for the sport’ if Verstappen leaves

Lando Norris went further in his assessment, stating that Formula 1 would lose one of its defining figures if Verstappen were to step away. He described the potential departure as a “loss for the sport”, emphasising that Verstappen is arguably one of the greatest drivers the series has ever seen.

“It would be a disgrace for the sport, a loss for the sport, if that were to actually happen. Because he is probably one of the best drivers ever seen in Formula 1,” explained the reigning world champion.

Norris’s remarks carry added weight given his status as the current world champion and one of Verstappen’s main rivals in the modern era. The two have engaged in intense on-track battles in recent seasons, with McLaren emerging as a consistent challenger to Red Bull at the front of the grid.

Growing speculation over Verstappen’s Red Bull future

Rumours surrounding Verstappen’s future have intensified following suggestions that internal changes at Red Bull and ongoing performance concerns could influence his long-term commitment. Reports have also linked key technical personnel movements within the wider paddock to potential shifts in team dynamics.

Former F1 driver Giedo van der Garde recently suggested that Verstappen could consider moving away from Red Bull if the team fails to maintain its dominant position. He argued that the Dutchman’s priority is simple: to be in a car capable of winning races and championships.

Meanwhile, former driver Riccardo Patrese has also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Verstappen leaving Red Bull is a realistic possibility if he feels that the current regulations no longer offer him enough enjoyment.

Verstappen’s stance and wider F1 uncertainty

Verstappen has previously criticised the current and incoming technical direction of Formula 1, expressing concerns about how the cars are evolving under new regulatory frameworks. These remarks have fuelled speculation that he could reassess his long-term future in the sport if he remains dissatisfied.

Although no formal indication of an imminent exit has been given, the ongoing debate highlights Verstappen’s growing influence within Formula 1’s competitive and political landscape.

For now, rivals such as Norris and Piastri continue to emphasise his importance to the sport, both as a benchmark and as a key figure in modern F1 competition.

  1. F1 will be fine! No individual is bigger than the sport, which has been self-sustaining for over 75 years! As long as the product continues to be a commercial and media rights success then it will remain on a strong footing. The attitude or threatened actions of a petulant sole individual will not derail the inexorable progress within the sport towards a more planet-friendly form of competitive cutting-edge motor racing.
