Piquet Jr. questions Hamilton’s motivation compared to Alonso’s – Despite both drivers remaining on the Formula 1 grid well into their 40s, Nelson Piquet Jr. claims that Fernando Alonso continues to show greater passion and determination than Lewis Hamilton. The former F1 driver argues that, while Hamilton’s talent is undeniable, Alonso’s hunger for success has endured more strongly over time.
Hamilton and Alonso, who are now driving for Ferrari and Aston Martin respectively, are the two oldest drivers currently competing in Formula 1. Although Hamilton is three years younger, Piquet Jr. believes that it is the Spaniard’s mindset that sets him apart at this stage in their careers.

Two champions, still competing at the highest level
The careers of Alonso and Hamilton have been closely linked ever since their intense 2007 season as McLaren teammates. Nearly two decades later, both remain active and competitive central figures in the sport.
Aged 44 and 41 respectively, they continue to demonstrate the kind of longevity rarely seen in modern Formula 1. They are both multiple-time world champions who have adapted to several regulatory changes, team environments and competitive cycles.
However, while their experience is undeniable, questions naturally arise about motivation and longevity as drivers move deeper into their careers. It is in this context that Piquet Jr. has offered his assessment.
“Alonso still has the passion”
Speaking about the two veterans, Piquet Jr. highlighted what he sees as a key difference in mindset. According to comments reported by Next-Gen Auto, he believes that Alonso’s desire to compete is as strong as ever.
“Lewis doesn’t have the love, the passion or the hunger that Fernando still possesses,” he said.
“He’s a very fast guy who’s always hungry. He has the same motivation and hunger as he did 20 years ago. It’s very admirable.”
In contrast, he suggested that Hamilton no longer displays the same level of intensity despite his continued presence at the front of the grid.
Comparing Alonso to Verstappen
Piquet Jr. drew further comparisons between the two drivers, describing them both as pure racers driven by an intrinsic love for competition.
“Fernando is like Max; they both love racing. He’s a pure competitor; he’s very fast,” he explained.
Reflecting on his experience of racing against Alonso, Piquet Jr recalled the Spaniard’s peak years, particularly around 2008, when Alonso was extremely difficult to beat.
“When I raced against him, he was at his peak. He was very difficult to beat. I have enormous respect for him as a driver.”
This comparison highlights that Alonso’s defining trait is not just speed, but an enduring competitive mindset that has remained unchanged over time.
Why the debate still matters
The comparison between Hamilton and Alonso continues to resonate because both drivers are still competing at the highest level in Formula 1. Their longevity challenges traditional expectations about peak performance and career lifespan in the sport.
While Piquet Jr.’s comments reflect a personal viewpoint, they contribute to a broader debate about how elite drivers evolve with age. Some drivers rely on experience and racecraft, while others maintain an aggressive, relentless approach.
Hamilton’s legacy as a seven-time world champion is secure, and his move to Ferrari signals his continued ambition. Meanwhile, Alonso’s performances since his comeback to the sport have further established his reputation as one of the sport’s most determined competitors.
