The motorsport world has been watching Sebastian Vettel, the celebrated four-time Formula One World Champion, as he begins a new chapter in his illustrious career in 2024. This could be just the prelude to an even bigger return to racing, with strong rumours suggesting that the former multiple world champion is in talks with Mercedes AMG F1 for a spectacular return to the grid in 2025.
Recently, Vettel stepped into the realm of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Porsche, testing the cutting-edge Porsche 963 at the MotorLand Aragon circuit in Spain. This pivotal moment is not just a transition for Vettel, but symbolises the wider evolution of racing, where versatility and adaptability across different formats are becoming indispensable traits for the modern racer. Indeed, look no further than Fernando Alonso.

Vettel: A new adventure in the WEC
In a meticulously prepared session, Vettel completed an impressive 118 laps, demonstrating his commitment and adaptability to this new challenge. Prior to this hands-on experience, Vettel’s preparation included a detailed simulator session and shakedown at Porsche’s Weissach facility, laying a solid foundation for his debut test.
His reflections on the experience underline the significant adjustments required, from adapting to the closed cockpit of the prototype to managing its different weight and tyre dynamics. This transition highlights Vettel’s willingness to learn and adapt, traits that have underpinned his career.
“Driving the Porsche 963 on the track here in Aragon was definitely fun,” reports Vettel.
“I first had to get used to everything and find my rhythm. The driving experience is different just because of the roof over my head, as is dealing with the higher weight and the tyres,
“The Porsche factory drivers were very helpful and explained to me: what is special and what I have to get used to.”

A glimpse of the future: Preparing for Le Mans
The Aragon test served a dual purpose for Vettel and Porsche: in addition to acclimatising Vettel to the unique demands of the WEC, it was a crucial step in preparing for the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. Jonathan Diuguid, who heads the Penske-Porsche racing programme, emphasised Aragon’s suitability for simulating the high-speed challenges synonymous with Le Mans.
“Aragon is one of the few circuits in Europe where we can drive around the clock in preparation for Le Mans,” says Jonathan Diuguid
“On the back straight, we reach speeds in excess of 300 km/h, similar to the Circuit des 24 Heures,” says Diuguid, referring to the highlight of the WEC season, the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The opportunity for Vettel to participate in this signature event adds an exciting dimension to Porsche’s campaign, combining his F1 expertise with Porsche’s storied endurance racing heritage.
Vettel’s impact: A boon for Porsche
Vettel’s foray into endurance racing goes beyond personal development; it represents a strategic advantage for Porsche. Diuguid praised Vettel’s insights into hybrid systems and high-performance vehicles, highlighting the value of his fresh perspective and technical feedback.
“The fact that Sebastian Vettel tested for us here is a unique opportunity for the team. As a four-time Formula 1 world champion, he has immense experience with hybrid systems and high-performance racing cars,
“His fresh and special view of where we are with our Porsche 963 , and his feedback on our systems is enormously valuable,” said Diuguid.
Although the scope of the test was limited – lacking the dynamics of GT car traffic – Vettel’s adaptability and contributions have raised optimistic expectations for his role in the team’s future endeavours.

Strong rumour: Formula 1 return with Mercedes
In the midst of this new beginning, the motorsport community is abuzz with rumours of Vettel’s potential return to F1, particularly in relation to Mercedes as a possible replacement for Lewis Hamilton.
Sebastian Vettel’s name has repeatedly been linked with the prestigious Silver Arrows. However, despite a recent report in Germany’s Bild newspaper suggesting that team principal Toto Wolff has his eye on other high-profile candidates – namely Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso – there are strong indications that the situation may be more nuanced and that Vettel’s potential involvement may not be as far-fetched as first reported.

Vettel responds to rumour
While Bild have identified Verstappen, who is chasing a fourth consecutive world title with Red Bull, and the evergreen Alonso, who at 42 is still proving his mettle with Aston Martin, as Wolff’s preferred choices, the undercurrents in the paddock suggest a different story. The narrative surrounding Vettel, a four-time F1 world champion, suggests a simmering undercurrent of interest from Mercedes, hinting at a potential shake-up in their driver line-up.
Despite the official stance downplaying Vettel’s chances – stemming from his recent move to test for Porsche Penske Motorsport in Spain – Vettel himself has left the door open, stating:
“We’ll see what happens next – at the moment there are no further plans for the future”. This non-committal response, coupled with Mercedes’ impending need to fill the void left by Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari in 2025, fuels speculation that Vettel could indeed be a contender for the coveted seat.

Rookie to replace Hamilton?
Adding further fuel to the speculation, Bild mentions Kimi Antonelli, the promising young Italian currently making waves in Formula 2 with Prema Racing, as an “outsider” for the Mercedes role. This reference to Antonelli, along with the dismissal of Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher as a potential successor due to his stint with Haas, further muddies the waters of the driver market dynamics.
Interestingly, Schumacher’s focus on the World Endurance Championship (WEC) this year does not completely remove him from the F1 conversation, serving as a reminder of the fluidity and unpredictability of driver movements within top-level motorsport.
While the Bild reports downplay Vettel’s involvement with Mercedes, the persistence of the rumours and Vettel’s pedigree as a competitor suggest that the story is far from over. With Mercedes at a pivotal moment in their F1 journey, the prospect of Vettel returning to the team presents an intriguing possibility, challenging the initial reports and keeping fans and insiders alike on the edge of their seats.

Since Max Verstappen arrived on the scene in Formula One, Red Bull have sacked three drivers mid-season in less than a decade. The world champion himself benefitted from a switch from the then Toro Rosso team to Red Bull in 2016 when Daniil Kvyat was deemed to be underperforming.
Then Pierre Gasly was dropped from racing alongside Max while Alex Albon was promoted after just half a season’s racing in 2019. Ricciardo was to benefit from the latest driver ditched mid-season by the Red Bull Racing organisation, when he stepped in last year after just ten races replacing the unlucky…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
