BYD considers possible entry into Formula 1 – The Chinese automotive giant is reportedly exploring a move into top-level motorsport, including the possibility of entering Formula 1. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the company is evaluating various ways to break into international racing in order to strengthen its global brand recognition.
These plans form part of a broader strategy by BYD to expand its influence beyond China and compete directly with well-established Western automotive manufacturers.

Motorsport as a Global Marketing Platform
Motorsport has long served as a high-profile platform for automakers looking to showcase their technological and engineering capabilities. For BYD, participation in elite racing categories could provide valuable exposure as the company rapidly expands its presence in overseas markets.
Sources from Bloomberg indicate that the manufacturer is considering several possible entry points into racing. These include the World Endurance Championship, which features the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as Formula One.
Within F1 itself, multiple pathways are reportedly under discussion. BYD could establish a new team from scratch, or alternatively acquire or partner with an existing team. Either option would require significant investment and long-term planning.
Hybrid technology aligns with racing trends
The current technological direction of top-level motorsport may also make the idea more appealing to the Chinese manufacturer. Both Formula One and the World Endurance Championship now place a strong emphasis on hybrid powertrains, an area in which BYD already has extensive expertise.
BYD has built its reputation through the large-scale production of electric and hybrid vehicles, establishing itself as one of the most influential players in the global transition towards electrified mobility. As racing categories increasingly highlight hybrid efficiency alongside performance, this technological alignment could provide a natural showcase for BYD’s capabilities.

Chinese Brands and Motorsport
Historically, Chinese manufacturers have had limited involvement in major global racing series. However, there have been several notable exceptions.
The Geely automotive group has competed in touring car events with Cyan Racing, and the electric vehicle manufacturer NIO won the inaugural drivers’ championship in Formula E in 2015.
Despite these successes, China has yet to establish a sustained presence in Formula One as either a manufacturer or team owner. A BYD entry would represent the most significant Chinese involvement in the championship to date.

High costs remain a major barrier
While the strategic benefits of entering Formula One are clear, the required financial commitment remains enormous. According to sources familiar with the discussions, developing and operating a competitive Formula One programme can cost around $500 million per season.
Such projects typically involve years of negotiations, infrastructure development and recruitment before a team can even reach the starting grid. Despite internal discussions, these barriers mean that BYD has not yet made a final decision about entering any motorsport category.
When contacted by TJ13, a BYD spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.
Expanding Beyond Mass-Market Electric Cars
At the same time as evaluating motorsport opportunities, BYD is also moving into higher-end vehicle segments. Traditionally known for producing affordable electric and hybrid cars, the company is now investing heavily in luxury and performance models.
One example is its premium sub-brand, Yangwang. In 2025, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme prototype was tested on a German circuit, reportedly reaching speeds in excess of 308 mph (approximately 495 km/h). This highlights the company’s ambition to showcase its capabilities in the realm of high-performance engineering.

A Rapidly Expanding Global Player
BYD’s exploration of motorsport comes at a time when the company is enjoying extraordinary commercial growth. In 2024, it surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles.
BYD has also led China’s push into international automotive markets, rapidly expanding its presence across Europe, Latin America, and other key regions. However, it currently does not sell passenger vehicles in the United States, largely due to tariffs and trade restrictions.
A partnership or team entry in Formula One could significantly raise BYD’s profile in North America, where the championship has grown in popularity in recent years.

The FIA is open to a Chinese entry
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of Formula One, has previously indicated that it would welcome greater global representation on the grid. Officials have suggested that the arrival of a Chinese team would be a natural progression for the championship, following Cadillac’s confirmed entry in the coming years.
Whether BYD will ultimately pursue this opportunity remains uncertain. For now, the discussions appear to be exploratory, but they highlight how rapidly the balance of power in the global automotive industry is shifting, with Chinese manufacturers increasingly looking towards the world’s most prestigious racing platforms.

Sources close to BYD have contacted TJ13 and suggest the company may announce something during the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix. While details are limited, exactly what the announcement might involve is still unclear.
It could relate to the formal exploration of a motorsport programme, potentially outlining BYD’s intentions regarding international racing categories such as Formula 1 or the World Endurance Championship. However, the statement may instead focus on a broader motorsport strategy rather than confirming an immediate entry into any specific series.
The Chinese Grand Prix would provide an ideal stage for such a reveal. As the country’s most important international motorsport event, the race attracts global media attention and offers a platform for domestic companies to showcase their ambitions on the world stage. Probably the most debated change in technical and sporting regulations in the history of Formula One finally was born into reality in Melbourne on Sunday 8th March. On the way to the grid, local hero Oscar Piastri slammed his McLaren car into the wall as an apparent torque spike took control of the MCL40.
The Australian was to take no further part in the days action. Previously in qualifying on his first flying lap, the driver considered a generational talent and maestro of car control, Max Verstappen suffered a similar fate sending his RB22 skipping across the gravel trap at turn one and into the barrier.
Max would start the Grand Prix down in in 20th place. The all new 2026 F1 cars have enormous amounts of torque available at the push of a button to the drivers, delivered from the hybrid powertrains which now sport 50% electrical power output alongside the internal combustion engines (ICE).
New cars, new rules, new kind of F1 racing
Torque from the electric motors unlike from the ICE is instant and uncontrolled will spin up the wheels at the rear of the car, leaving the driver helpless to control what follows. Add into the mix that the 2026 cars have lost a huge amount of downforce and ride on tyres which have a smaller contact patch meaning less grip.
Throughout the weekend, F1 analysts and broadcasters were marvelling at the fact the F1 cars were no longer on rails and that the drivers were being forced to wrestle control of their machines. Another improvement to the spectacle was the fact that the new aerodynamics and powertrains were allowing the cars to follow more closely without the driver behind destroying his tyres.
At the start of the race, George Russell on pole position reported his battery pack appeared empty and with the lights going out almost instantaneously he and a number of drivers were caught by surprise.
