McLaren announce major F1 contract extension as stability for the champions is achieved and McLaren retain key a aerodynamics expert – McLaren, the reigning Formula One Constructors’ Champion, has secured the long-term future of a key member of its successful technical team. On Tuesday, the British team confirmed that Peter Prodromou, its Technical Director of Aerodynamics, has signed a multi-year contract extension.
Prodromou, an experienced aerodynamics specialist, has been a pillar of McLaren’s resurgence in recent years. His leadership in aerodynamic development was instrumental in the team’s stunning 2024 season, which culminated in McLaren’s first Constructors’ Championship since 1998.
“It is a great honour to confirm Peter’s multi-season contract extension,” said McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella. While not revealing the exact length of the new deal, Stella emphasised the importance of Prodromou’s role: “The cultural, organisational and technical leadership that Peter has brought to the team is invaluable.”
Stella hailed Prodromou as a key architect of McLaren’s revival, noting that his expertise had been instrumental in the team’s significant leap in competitiveness.
“The journey we have taken together as a team would not have been possible without Peter,” Stella added.

A career rooted in McLaren and championship success
Prodromou is one of McLaren’s longest serving engineers, having joined the Woking-based team in 1991. He worked his way up to Chief Aerodynamicist before moving to Red Bull Racing in 2006, where he played a key role in designing the dominant cars that won four consecutive titles with Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013.
He returned to McLaren as chief engineer in 2014 and was eventually promoted to technical director of aerodynamics in 2023, following a structural overhaul led by Stella. The move aligned Prodromou with Neil Houldey (Technical Director, Engineering) and Rob Marshall (Chief Designer) in McLaren’s streamlined technical leadership structure.
Stella has often emphasised that Prodromou’s full potential was not realised under the team’s previous leadership structure.
“In the area of aerodynamics, we wanted a technical director who could take full ownership – someone with full responsibility for development in this area,” said Stella when he restructured McLaren’s technical department in 2023.
“We also wanted to maximise the expertise we already had in the team, which for various reasons had not been used to its full potential. Peter is one of the most competent aerodynamicists in F1, and it was important to give him the space and authority he needed to lead.”
The results of Stella’s reshuffle were evident almost immediately. McLaren unveiled a ground-breaking aerodynamic package at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix that propelled the team into the front-running battle. By the end of the 2024 season, McLaren had transformed itself from a midfield contender into a championship-winning powerhouse.
McLaren’s continued commitment to consistency
Having secured its first Constructors’ Championship in over two decades, McLaren is now reinforcing the foundations of its winning formula. Prodromou’s contract extension follows the team’s recent moves to ensure long-term stability. Both drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have signed extended contracts until 2024, while Team Principal Andrea Stella has also committed his future to McLaren.
This continuity signals McLaren’s confidence in its current structure and long-term vision. The team’s leadership is determined to build on its recent success and challenge for more titles in the coming years.
Prodromou, for his part, expressed his excitement at continuing his work with McLaren. “I am very grateful to Zak (Brown, McLaren CEO) and Andrea for their continued confidence in me as Technical Director Aerodynamics, as well as to all my colleagues in the team who have given me outstanding support on both a personal and professional level,” he said.
“It is an honour to be part of such a collaborative team and to contribute to this impressive upward trend. After the success of last season, I look forward to continuing to work towards our common goal of winning more World Championships.”
McLaren’s resurgence has been one of the biggest stories in Formula One in recent years. With its key personnel locked in for the foreseeable future, the team has set its sights on sustained success at the top of the sport.

MORE F1 NEWS – Mario Andretti breaks silence on silly F1 politics
The Andretti father and son have kept their silence since Liberty Media’s F1 operating company (FOM) decided to do a U-Turn on its decision to exclude them from joining the sport. The FIA who regulate F1 had previously given the green light to the Andretti Racing organisation yet a number of the teams had made clear their opposition to an eleventh team.
Of course the issue was all about money as Christian Horner made clear when FOM announced an agreement had been reached over an eleventh team. Surprisingly the F1 bosses appeared to be taken aback around the time of the announcement as the Red Bull boss made clear when asked at the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix
“There’s a lot of rumours going around,” he told Sky F1.“Nobody’s spoken to us about it, but who knows. Obviously, for an American team to come in, I think would be a positive.” …READ MORE ON THIS STORY
