Williams announce mega deal

Last Updated on February 11 2025, 5:12 pm

New title sponsor – “This is the biggest deal in the 48-year history of Williams”. This is how the historic Formula One team from Grove, England, describes its new sponsorship deal with Australian-based software giant Atlassian. The team did not disclose the value of the deal, which was signed ahead of the 2025 season. It only said that the deal would run for “several years”, but did not specify how many years.

But one thing is certain: Atlassian is creating an atmosphere of optimism at Williams. Team principal James Vowles speaks of a “momentous day in the glorious history” of his team and describes Atlassian as a “key milestone in our rebuilding”. Williams, once one of the top teams in F1, wants to get back to the top. To do that, the team needs to have “all the right elements in place”, says Vowles.

He adds: “With Atlassian, we have a partner whose technology and tools will help us reach our full potential by improving collaboration and teamwork across the organisation.”

Software partnership promises solutions beyond sponsorship

This is where Atlassian excels says Williams: The company, now based in the USA, specialises in software solutions for businesses, with the aim of making workflows more efficient and meaningful. To this end, Atlassian develops its own software solutions, but has also acquired third-party applications in the past.

The publicly traded company, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, has more than 10,000 employees in more than a dozen locations worldwide and serves approximately 300,000 customers.

Now it has added Williams, a Formula 1 team supported by Atlassian as title sponsor, technology and software partner.

Why Atlassian is involved in Formula 1

Managing director and co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes sums up why Atlassian is excited about the project: “Formula 1 is the ultimate team sport. Engineers, developers, commercial teams, pit crews and many other stakeholders work together in real time at incredible speeds to fight for podium finishes.”

Williams has been far from such success in recent times: The team’s last podium finish came in the 2021 season at the abandoned Belgian Grand Prix, where not a single lap was completed under the green flag – George Russell benefiting from an outstanding qualifying performance.

Williams’ last podium came in Baku in 2017, while their last race win came in 2012 – also a surprise: Pastor Maldonado’s surprise victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

But Cannon-Brookes shares Vowles’ confidence in Williams’ ability to return to the top. His company is a firm believer in the power of teamwork, as the Atlassian CEO points out: “We know that with the right tools and methods, great teams can achieve things that would be impossible on their own.

Williams has undergone a “remarkable transformation” in the past few years since the change in ownership, Cannon-Brookes continued.

“I believe the team has all the foundations for a new era of success.”

Formula One: Williams announce transitional design

Williams has also strengthened its driver line-up for the 2025 season, with Alexander Albon joined by former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz. For the first time since Robert Kubica in 2019, a race winner will sit in a Williams Formula 1 car.

The team unveiled the first images of the new race suits as part of the Atlassian announcement. This will be followed on Friday 14 February by a transitional design of the new Williams FW47, highlighting the new title sponsor.

The final colour scheme will be unveiled a few days later, on 18 February, at the official F1 presentation in London.

MORE F1 NEWS – Mario Andretti breaks silence on silly F1 politics

The Andretti father and son have kept their silence since  Liberty Media’s F1 operating company (FOM) decided to do a U-Turn on its decision to exclude them from joining the sport. The FIA who regulate F1 had previously given the green light to the Andretti Racing organisation yet a number of the teams had made clear their opposition to an eleventh team.

Of course the issue was all about money as Christian Horner made clear when FOM announced an agreement had been reached over an eleventh team. Surprisingly the F1 bosses appeared to be taken aback around the time of the announcement as the Red Bull boss made clear when asked at the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix

“There’s a lot of rumours going around,” he told Sky F1.“Nobody’s spoken to us about it, but who knows. Obviously, for an American team to come in, I think would be a positive.” …READ MORE ON THIS STORY
