Verstappen: The transfer that could ignite F1

Last Updated on January 30 2025, 7:03 pm

A Red Bull exit clause that could change everything – Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 is once again at the centre of speculation, despite being contracted to Red Bull Racing until 2028. While the Dutchman has dominated the sport in recent years and is set to secure a fourth consecutive world championship in 2024, there are growing concerns over his long-term commitment to the Austrian outfit.

Buried within his seemingly ironclad contract are several exit clauses that could allow him to leave Red Bull under certain conditions – most notably if the team’s performance drops significantly or if he is no longer provided with a title-winning car.

With Formula One regulations set to remain stable in 2025, but to change significantly in 2026 – particularly in the area of power units – there is uncertainty over Red Bull’s ability to continue to deliver a championship-winning package. This uncertainty has sparked interest from rival teams, all eager to capitalise on the opportunity to lure the sport’s biggest star away from Red Bull. Among the contenders, one team is already emerging as a front-runner: Aston Martin.

Aston Martin: The ideal landing spot for Verstappen?

Aston Martin has been one of the most exciting teams to watch in recent years, thanks to an aggressive investment strategy spearheaded by billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll. The British team has been rapidly moving up the competitive ladder, making significant improvements to its facilities, personnel and infrastructure, all with the aim of becoming a consistent championship contender.

A key component of Aston Martin’s success has been the presence of two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso. However, with the Spaniard now 43 years old, the team must look to the future. While Alonso remains competitive and hungry for a third title, Aston Martin are aware that securing a long-term superstar is essential to maintain their momentum. According to reports in *The Daily Mail*, the team has been making behind-the-scenes moves to position itself as Verstappen’s next destination, even contacting sponsors to explore the possibility of signing the Dutchman.

It would be a seismic shift in F1, as Verstappen has been the face of Red Bull since his promotion to the senior team in 2016. However, with Aston Martin’s ambitious project gaining traction, Verstappen may see it as a more attractive long-term bet – especially if Red Bull struggle to adapt to the 2026 rule changes.

A billion-dollar offer? Aston Martin responds

One of the most eye-catching rumours surrounding Verstappen’s potential move to Aston Martin is the claim that the British team are prepared to offer him a staggering €1 billion contract.

If true, the figure would smash all previous motorsport records and make Verstappen the highest paid driver in Formula One history. However, Aston Martin have since dismissed the reports, with a spokesman categorically denying the existence of any such offer.

Despite this, the speculation refuses to die down, largely due to comments made by 1978 F1 world champion Mario Andretti. Speaking to *F1Maximaal*, Andretti confidently stated that Aston Martin are indeed targeting Verstappen, reinforcing the notion that Lawrence Stroll’s team are determined to land the Dutch superstar.

“I know for sure that they would like to have Verstappen,” said Andretti.

“Let’s be honest, if you surround yourself with people who have proven themselves and shown that they are the best, then you are almost guaranteed to get results.

“Who wouldn’t want Adrian Newey and Max Verstappen in their team? I would give my right arm to have them in my team, so I completely understand Aston Martin’s interest.”

The Adrian Newey Factor: A game-changer for Aston Martin?

Andretti’s comments also highlight another crucial element in this potential transfer saga: Adrian Newey. The legendary Red Bull designer, widely regarded as one of the greatest minds in F1 history, has been instrumental in Verstappen’s dominance in recent seasons.

His ability to design cars that extract maximum performance from a given set of rules has made him an invaluable asset to Red Bull.

However, Newey’s future is now uncertain. There have been whispers that he could leave Red Bull, and if he does, Aston Martin could be a prime destination for the British engineer. Andretti himself admitted that securing Newey’s expertise would be a priority for any ambitious team.

“I would hire him in a heartbeat if I could,” Andretti continued.

“I have worked with him so I know him well and I know how talented he is. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of incredible people in my career, and he’s by far the best I’ve worked with. We have achieved results together. If I were a driver, I would always feel comfortable putting my future in his hands.”

If Newey were to join Aston Martin alongside Verstappen, it would signal a monumental shift in the power structure of Formula One. The combination of Verstappen’s driving ability and Newey’s engineering brilliance is a proven formula for success, and it could be replicated under the Aston Martin banner.

Can Red Bull convince Verstappen to stay?

For now, Red Bull are in control of Verstappen’s future. With a contract running until 2028 and a car still capable of winning races, the Dutchman has little reason to leave in the immediate future. However, should Red Bull falter in 2026 – particularly with the introduction of new engine regulations – Verstappen may reconsider his loyalty.

Christian Horner and the Red Bull management will undoubtedly do everything in their power to keep their star driver happy. The team has already shown a willingness to invest in performance, securing a long-term partnership with Honda and maintaining a strong technical department.

However, the departure of key personnel such as Newey could signal instability and Verstappen may not want to take unnecessary risks with his career.

Should Red Bull fail to deliver a championship-winning car in 2026, Verstappen’s release clauses could come into play and Aston Martin would be at the front of the queue to capitalise on the opportunity.

The wider implications of a Verstappen move

A potential Verstappen move to Aston Martin would have massive implications beyond the driver market. It would cement Aston Martin’s status as a true powerhouse in F1, elevating them to the level of established giants such as Mercedes and Ferrari. It would also create a ripple effect across the grid, potentially triggering a cascade of driver moves as teams scramble to reshape their line-ups.

For Red Bull, losing Verstappen would be nothing short of catastrophic. The team have built all of their recent success around him and his departure would leave a gaping hole in their line-up. While young talents like Liam Lawson or even a returning Daniel Ricciardo could step in, no one on the current grid can match Verstappen’s sheer dominance.

As the 2025 season approaches, the key question remains: will Verstappen remain loyal to Red Bull or seek a new challenge with Aston Martin? With so many variables in play, F1 fans are in for a few exciting years as this saga unfolds.
