Verstappen confirms Mercedes discussions after they “sat together” and had “constructive” talks – Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula One World Champion, has confirmed long-rumoured talks with Mercedes.

After months of speculation and swirling rumours about his possible move from Red Bull Racing to the Silver Arrows, Verstappen has shed light on the “constructive” talks he has had with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

In his season review, broadcast on Dutch television channel *Viaplay*, Verstappen openly discussed the nature of those talks, while reiterating his loyalty to Red Bull Racing, a team he has described as his “second family”.

Tensions at Red Bull spark speculation

The 2024 Formula One season was anything but smooth for Red Bull Racing, despite Verstappen securing his fourth consecutive world championship.

The team faced internal tensions and well-publicised power struggles that overshadowed its dominance on the track. Team principal Christian Horner found himself at the centre of several controversies, including allegations from a close colleague that demanded answers from the Red Bull hierarchy.

Adding to the turmoil, Red Bull’s long-serving technical director and aerodynamics mastermind Adrian Newey left during the season, leaving many to question the stability of the team’s future. These developments have only fuelled speculation about Verstappen’s possible exit.

Mercedes, a team in transition following the departure of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, emerged as the front-runners to secure Verstappen’s services. Wolff made no secret of his admiration for the Dutchman, openly courting him throughout the year.

“We know what happened with Verstappen in 2021”

“We sat together”

Verstappen, who was open about the situation, admitted that discussions with Mercedes did take place.

“The big teams are always interesting, but on the other hand I’m also in a very big team,” said Verstappen, emphasising his continued satisfaction with Red Bull Racing.

He added: “Of course we all talk to each other all the time. And I’m not lying when I say we sat together. They were very constructive discussions. Everyone has always been very honest and open with each other.”

While acknowledging the allure of other teams such as Mercedes, Verstappen stressed the importance of loyalty and comfort in his decision making.

“I’m also very loyal to my team and I just feel comfortable there,” he said.

Red Bull: A second family

Verstappen’s connection with Red Bull Racing extends far beyond the track.

“I’ve had a lot of success with them. It feels like a second family,” said Verstappen. That sense of belonging and trust, coupled with a contract that runs until the end of 2028, has been instrumental in keeping the 27-year-old firmly rooted at Red Bull for the time being.

He explained that while outside interest is flattering, there isn’t much incentive to move at the moment.

“So for interested parties like Mercedes, there’s not really much to achieve at the moment,” Verstappen said.

The future: Anything can happen

Despite his current loyalty, Verstappen has not completely closed the door on future opportunities.

“I am still very young and a lot can happen in the future,” he admitted, leaving room for potential changes down the line.

However, Verstappen was also keen to point out the fundamental difference between F1 and football. Unlike football, where players often switch teams mid-contract, Formula One operates with more stability due to its long-term contracts.

“You can’t control what’s going to happen next year or two years from now,” said Verstappen, suggesting that such uncertainty shapes his approach to his career.

“I don’t think about it too much,” he concluded.

Toto Wolff’s perspective

While Verstappen has been open about the discussions, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has remained diplomatic. Throughout the season, Wolff has consistently praised Verstappen’s abilities, but has refrained from commenting on any specific recruitment efforts.

Wolff’s interest in Verstappen is understandable given the Dutchman’s dominance over the past four years.

As Mercedes look to rebuild their championship-winning momentum following Hamilton’s departure, securing Verstappen would undoubtedly be a game-changing move.

Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull

For now, Verstappen remains firmly committed to Red Bull Racing. With a contract that runs until 2028 and strong relationships within the team, he is well placed to continue his dominance of the sport.

Red Bull Racing will also be keen to retain the loyalty of their star driver as they face their challenges and strive to maintain their competitive edge.

Max Verstappen’s confirmation of talks with Mercedes provides a fascinating insight into the high-stakes negotiations and changing dynamics of Formula One. While the Dutchman remains loyal to Red Bull Racing, his openness about future possibilities has fans and rivals alike speculating about what lies ahead.

For now, Verstappen and Red Bull appear to be an inseparable duo, but as F1 has shown time and time again, the landscape can change in an instant. Whether these talks are the prelude to a blockbuster move or simply a footnote in Verstappen’s storied career, only time will tell.

MORE F1 NEWS – Chandhok incensed at Verstappen comments

Much has been made of the latest epic F1 duelling pair of drivers which have filled our screens across the 2024 Formula One season. Some believe Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are set to give us an era where the fierce on track battles resemble that of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.

Despite Verstappen winning four of the first six races, the signs were already there that McLaren had a fast car. Having won his maiden F1 race of his career in Miami, next time out Lando Norris was to experience a Max ‘wonder lap’ in Emilia-Romagne qualifying which saw him start the race in second place.

The world champion made a good start to the Grand Prix taking the lead at the first corner and on a track which is questionable suitable for the huge modern F1 cars, Max retained his lead throughout the race. That said a rampant Norris over the closing 15 laps slashed the 6 second lead to finish just 0.75s behind the winning Red Bull driver…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
