Eyebrows raised at Mercedes as Ferrari boss speaks about Hamilton talks

Last Updated on December 19 2024, 11:20 am

In a revelation likely to raise eyebrows at Mercedes, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has given an insight into the process of bringing Lewis Hamilton into the iconic Scuderia’s fold. According to Vasseur, persuading the seven-time world champion to swap the silver of Mercedes for the red of Ferrari was surprisingly easy.

The move marks the end of a legendary era for Hamilton, who will contest his final race with Mercedes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December 2023. As the curtain falls on a historic partnership, Hamilton has set his sights on an ambitious goal: winning an unprecedented eighth Formula One Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari in 2024.

A surprise move

The announcement of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in the winter of 2024 sent shockwaves through the Formula One world. While the Briton has long been synonymous with Mercedes, his decision to leave the team that helped him dominate the sport for nearly a decade surprised fans, pundits and even Mercedes.

For Ferrari, however, Hamilton’s arrival represents a major coup. The Scuderia has not won a drivers’ championship since Kimi Raikkonen’s triumph in 2007, and its last constructors’ title came in 2008. Vasseur is confident that Hamilton can help end that drought.

Vasseur’s insight: Why the switch was “not difficult”

Speaking to the media at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters, Vasseur explained that Hamilton’s decision was influenced by Ferrari’s recent progress and the allure of joining the legendary Italian team.

Vasseurs’ comments are likely to raise some eyebrows at Mercedes when the Ferrari team boss claimed how easy it was to convince the British driver to move over to the Italian team.

“In 2023, we won more races than Mercedes and the start of the season was also good,” Vasseur said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“So it was not too difficult to convince him that Ferrari would be a good project.”

Vasseur also revealed that Hamilton has had a dream of driving for Ferrari for decades.

“I think he has had the project of driving for Ferrari in his head for at least 22 or 23 years, because we talked about it in 2004.”

Timing, according to Vasseur, played a crucial role.

“Sometimes it’s just a coincidence, or the alignment of all the planets, that he’s on the market and Ferrari has a vacancy,” he said.

The actual negotiations, according to Vasseur, were straightforward.

“We started talking a year ago and it wasn’t difficult to convince him”.

End of an era at Mercedes

Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes marks the end of one of the most successful partnerships in F1 history. From 2013, Hamilton and Mercedes became the dominant force in the sport, winning six Drivers’ Championships between them and setting numerous records.

However, Mercedes’ performance has waned in recent years. Since the controversial 2021 season finale, in which Hamilton narrowly missed out on an eighth title, the team has struggled to regain its former dominance.

The challenges at Mercedes may have been a factor in Hamilton’s decision to leave. By contrast, Ferrari have shown flashes of competitiveness, winning several races in 2023 and demonstrating the potential for a strong campaign in 2024.

A bold new chapter for Hamilton

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari represents a significant risk. The Scuderia’s long championship drought and history of operational inconsistencies present challenges for the veteran driver. Nevertheless, Hamilton’s arrival has injected a new sense of optimism into Ferrari’s ranks.

Described as “madness” by some F1 insiders, Ferrari’s plan for Hamilton hinges on the Briton’s ability to bring his experience and winning mentality to the team. For Hamilton, the move offers the chance to cement his legacy by bringing a long-awaited title to one of motorsport’s most storied teams.

Hamilton’s Ferrari dream

Hamilton’s admiration for Ferrari is no secret. Over the years he has often spoken of the allure of driving for the iconic team. Vasseur’s comments about their early discussions in 2004 highlight how long the idea of a move to Ferrari has been on Hamilton’s mind.

The opportunity to finally realise that dream, coupled with Ferrari’s recent progress, seems to have been the perfect combination for Hamilton.

“It’s not just about the car or the team, it’s about being part of a legacy,” said Hamilton in a recent interview.

What lies ahead

As the 2024 season approaches, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Hamilton and Ferrari. Can the Briton lead the team back to glory, or will the challenges of adapting to a new environment and overcoming the Scuderia’s historic struggles prove insurmountable?

For now, one thing is clear: Hamilton’s move has reshaped the F1 landscape. With the Briton in Ferrari red, the coming season promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

MORE F1 NEWS – Chandhok incensed at Verstappen comments

Much has been made of the latest epic F1 duelling pair of drivers which have filled our screens across the 2024 Formula One season. Some believe Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are set to give us an era where the fierce on track battles resemble that of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.

Despite Verstappen winning four of the first six races, the signs were already there that McLaren had a fast car. Having won his maiden F1 race of his career in Miami, next time out Lando Norris was to experience a Max ‘wonder lap’ in Emilia-Romagne qualifying which saw him start the race in second place.

The world champion made a good start to the Grand Prix taking the lead at the first corner and on a track which is questionable suitable for the huge modern F1 cars, Max retained his lead throughout the race. That said a rampant Norris over the closing 15 laps slashed the 6 second lead to finish just 0.75s behind the winning Red Bull driver…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
