Norris’ mental ‘weakness’ gives Verstappen an edge

Norris’ mental ‘weakness’ gives Verstappen the edge claims Red Bull who believes Verstappen’s mental resilience will secure fourth title – As the 2024 Formula One season draws to a close, discussions about mental toughness and psychological resilience in motorsport have taken centre stage. Leading the conversation is Red Bull advisor and long-time mentor to Max Verstappen, Dr Helmut Marko, who believes Verstappen’s superior mental strength could be the deciding factor in this year’s championship.

According to Marko, it’s this psychological edge that makes Verstappen the favourite to win a fourth consecutive world championship, especially when compared to his main rival for the title, Lando Norris.

Speaking to motorsport-magazin.com, Marko didn’t hesitate to highlight what he sees as the key difference between the two young drivers, suggesting that Norris’ mental fragility could cost him the championship in the long run.

Marko highlights Norris’ pre-race rituals and weaknesses

At just 24 years of age, Lando Norris has quickly risen through the ranks of Formula One to become one of the brightest talents on the grid. However, as Marko points out, Norris’ progress has been hampered by mental struggles, particularly in high-pressure situations such as race starts.

“Norris, as we know, has certain weaknesses at the start,” noted the 81-year-old Austrian.

“And as I have now read, there are also weaknesses in other areas. For example, he has to follow certain rituals on race day in order to be able to perform at all.”

Norris has openly admitted that he suffers from intense pre-race nerves, often to the point where he struggles to eat or drink before getting into the car. His anxiety, while not uncommon in such a high-stakes sport, has become a talking point, especially as he looks to challenge Verstappen for the championship.

This anxiety has at times led Norris to rely on specific pre-race routines to prepare himself mentally, a practice that Marko believes could expose a vulnerability when compared to Verstappen’s seemingly unshakable composure.

Verstappen: The mental giant of F1

While Norris struggles with nerves and pre-race rituals, Verstappen’s ability to remain calm under pressure has been a defining trait throughout his career. Marko highlighted this mental toughness, which he believes sets Verstappen apart from his rivals.

“He is the best, the fastest and, in terms of mental strength, the safest,” Marko said confidently. Despite a dwindling 52-point lead and recent struggles with the Red Bull car’s performance, Verstappen remains the firm favourite to win the 2024 championship, according to Marko.

Marko’s praise for Verstappen isn’t limited to his speed and skill on the track, but extends to his resilience in the face of pressure. He believes that Verstappen’s mental toughness has been a key factor in his continued success, allowing him to maintain focus and consistency during difficult moments in the championship battle.

McLaren’s inexperience showing in title race

While Verstappen’s mental toughness has been honed over years of championship battles, Marko suggests that McLaren as a team still lacks the maturity to consistently challenge for titles. Despite the team’s significant improvements in car performance, Marko points out that McLaren have made some costly mistakes, particularly in terms of strategy and operations.

“You can see that McLaren has made a relatively large number of mistakes, both in terms of strategy and operations,” Marko explained.

“That’s something you have to learn.”

Marko drew a parallel with Red Bull’s own experience in 2009, when the team lost the championship despite having the fastest car in the second half of the season. According to him, the team simply weren’t mature enough at that point to capitalise on the speed of their car.

For McLaren, it seems that the combination of Norris’ mental struggles and the team’s inexperience in high-stakes championship battles may prevent them from overtaking Red Bull this season. While the car has the potential, Marko believes it will take time for the team to fully adapt and consistently turn their superior performance into wins and championships.

Glock weighs in: Verstappen has the edge

Former F1 driver Timo Glock acknowledges the immense pressure on Verstappen, but believes the Dutchman has the upper hand in the championship battle. Speaking to web.de, Glock highlighted the difference in pressure between Verstappen and Norris as the season reaches its climax.

“The pressure is mainly on Verstappen because he has to manage the lead,” said Glock.

“For Norris, he just has to take each race as it comes and win them all. That’s all he can do.”

However, Glock believes Verstappen’s experience in previous title fights – most notably his intense 2021 championship battle with Lewis Hamilton – has prepared him for these high-pressure situations. Having emerged victorious in one of the most hotly contested title fights in recent memory, Verstappen has developed a calmness and focus that allows him to thrive under pressure.

“Max gained a lot of experience during the 2021 title fight against Lewis Hamilton,” said Glock.

“He knows how to deal with tense and difficult situations.”

Norris, on the other hand, is still relatively new to the pressures of a real championship fight. While his talent is undeniable, the mental demands of competing consistently at the front of the grid could prove to be a stumbling block as he continues to develop as a driver.

Is Red Bull’s dominance coming to an end?

While Verstappen remains the favourite to win another world title, there are growing concerns about Red Bull’s long-term future at the top of F1. New Audi F1 boss Mattia Binotto recently suggested that Red Bull’s cycle of dominance may be coming to an end.

“Cycles have a beginning and an end, as always in F1,” Binotto told Corriere della Sera.

“And Red Bull’s is at the end.”

The comments come amid growing speculation about Red Bull’s recent struggles with car performance, particularly in areas such as aerodynamics and wind tunnel development. Glock echoed these concerns, pointing out that even top teams like Red Bull can falter when faced with internal challenges.

“There has been so much turmoil at Red Bull that we can see that even a top team can falter,” said Glock.

“They now have to find the cause of the poor sporting development, whether it’s the outdated wind tunnel, the ground or something else.”

Red Bull may be struggling, but Verstappen’s mental toughness and experience could see him through to another world championship, even if the team’s car isn’t performing at its best. However, as F1 has shown time and time again, nothing is certain until the final race.

Verstappen’s mental edge could decide 2024 championship

As the 2024 Formula One season draws to a close, the battle for the championship appears to be as much a psychological contest as it is a physical one. While Lando Norris continues to push for his first world title, the mental toughness of Max Verstappen could ultimately prove to be the deciding factor.

As the pressure mounts, Verstappen’s composure and experience in high-stakes situations gives him a clear advantage. Meanwhile, Norris’ nerves and McLaren’s operational mistakes could hinder their chances of mounting a successful challenge this season.

As F1 heads into the final races of the season, it’s clear that mental toughness could be just as important as track speed in determining the 2024 world champion.
