Red Bull: The scandal that scuppered Verstappen’s 2024 campaign with a rocky start to the 2024 season for the Dutchman – Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula One World Champion for three consecutive years, entered the 2024 season with every expectation of continuing his dominance.
The Dutchman had been in unrivalled form in 2021, 2022 and 2023, securing three successive titles for Red Bull Racing and cementing his place in F1 history as one of the sport’s greatest talents. Heading into the 2024 season, Verstappen appeared to be on course for a fourth consecutive championship.
However, after a strong start, the tide began to turn as unforeseen challenges emerged that neither Verstappen nor Red Bull had anticipated.

2024, a year of ups & downs for Verstappen
Verstappen’s promising 2024 campaign began to unravel as his car, the once-dominant Red Bull RB20, began to experience reliability issues and performance shortfalls. Since the Spanish Grand Prix in June, Verstappen has failed to win a single race, a shocking contrast to the complete control he had displayed on the track for several seasons. Despite their best efforts, Red Bull’s engineers and team principal Christian Horner have struggled to find a solution to the problems plaguing Verstappen’s car.
Against the backdrop of these technical issues, Red Bull have also been embroiled in an internal scandal which many believe has distracted the team from focusing on Verstappen’s title defence.
The controversy, centred around Christian Horner, has cast a shadow over Red Bull’s 2024 season and further complicated matters for the Dutch star.

The Horner scandal: Behind the scenes turmoil
At the heart of Red Bull’s troubles is a scandal involving team principal Christian Horner, who has led the team to immense success over the years. Horner, who took over Red Bull Racing in 2005 and played a pivotal role in the team’s rise to dominance, found himself at the centre of an internal investigation earlier this year.
Allegations surfaced that Horner had behaved inappropriately towards a colleague, with claims of “messages with sexual connotations” and “transgressive sexual behaviour”.
The scandal, which first came to light through Red Bull’s internal channels, allegedly involved Horner offering a substantial sum of €760,000 to cover up the affair. Although an internal investigation cleared Horner of wrongdoing, the controversy was reignited when anonymous emails containing screenshots of WhatsApp messages, photos and videos allegedly linked to Horner were circulated to various F1 journalists and team bosses.
The fallout from the scandal has not only thrown Horner’s future into doubt, but has also reportedly affected Red Bull’s internal structure and operations.

Marko blames Horner
Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s head of the young driver programme, suggested that the controversy surrounding Horner had affected the team’s performance, particularly in their efforts to resolve the problems plaguing Verstappen’s car.
“2024 started very successfully,” Marko explained, “but in the meantime there was some turbulence around Christian Horner,
“Dietrich Mateschitz [the late Red Bull founder] was replaced by Horner, which changed the structure a lot. Horner has just taken on a number of roles, but when such an extraordinary personality leaves, there is a big change in the whole thing.
“The Horner thing certainly didn’t help, but we came to the conclusion that we had to work together to get a winning car and keep Max.”

Red Bull’s struggles with Verstappen’s car problems
While the Horner scandal has undoubtedly had an impact on the dynamics of the team, Red Bull’s inability to provide Verstappen with a competitive car has become the most pressing issue of the season. Since June, Verstappen has been plagued by technical problems that have hampered his chances of winning races and extending his lead in the championship. Despite his immense driving talent, even Verstappen has been unable to overcome the RB20’s shortcomings.
Issues that have plagued Verstappen’s car include erratic handling, brake failures and power unit problems that have left Red Bull’s engineers scrambling to find solutions.
The team’s previously unbeatable combination of aerodynamic superiority and cutting-edge engine technology now appears to have hit a brick wall, with Verstappen himself expressing frustration at the lack of progress.
Adding to the pressure, Verstappen’s main rivals, including Mercedes and Ferrari, have made significant strides in closing the performance gap. Drivers such as Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and even rising stars such as Lando Norris and George Russell have capitalised on Red Bull’s missteps, leaving Verstappen in a more precarious position than he has been in for years.

The impact on Red Bull’s team structure and morale
The Horner scandal has not only cast doubt on Red Bull’s leadership, it has also disrupted the team’s focus. Horner, who has been synonymous with Red Bull’s success, was tasked with taking on even greater responsibilities following the death of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022.
Mateschitz’s death marked the beginning of a significant shift in Red Bull’s corporate and team structure, with Horner taking on a more prominent role within the organisation.
However, the added responsibility, coupled with the public scandal, has raised questions about Horner’s ability to maintain his usual high standard of leadership. The controversy has undoubtedly taken a toll on team morale, and Red Bull’s traditionally united front is showing signs of strain.
According to insiders, the atmosphere within Red Bull has become more tense and fragmented since the scandal broke. Team members are said to be preoccupied with the ongoing investigation, which has distracted from the task of developing and fine-tuning Verstappen’s car. While the team have denied that the scandal has affected their on-track performance, there is little doubt that the situation has had a psychological impact on the team’s engineers, mechanics and support staff.

Verstappen’s future: Can Red Bull bounce back?
As the 2024 season gets underway, questions are being asked about Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull. With the team struggling to maintain its competitive edge and the Horner scandal still looming large, Verstappen’s loyalty to the team could be tested. Although Red Bull remain one of the most successful teams in the sport, their inability to address the ongoing issues with the car has left Verstappen in a difficult position.
For now, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull as he and the team work to get back to their winning ways. However, with rival teams improving and the pressure mounting, Red Bull’s ability to retain their star driver may ultimately depend on whether they can resolve their internal issues and provide Verstappen with a car capable of winning races again.
Helmut Marko’s comments suggest that Red Bull are aware of the stakes.
“To get a winning car and keep Max,” Marko stressed, “we have to work together…”
As the season nears its midway point, Red Bull’s focus must shift back to the track. But with unresolved technical issues and the ongoing scandal surrounding Christian Horner, it remains to be seen whether the team can recover in time to help Max Verstappen secure another championship – or whether this tumultuous season will mark the end of an era for the Dutchman at Red Bull.
