Lawson reveals juicy details of Ricciardo’s exit

Lawson gets big break as Ricciardo’s exit is confirmed as Racing Bulls announce new driver line-up for US Grand Prix – The Racing Bulls Formula One team will unveil a new line-up for the US Grand Prix, marking a significant shake-up on the grid.

While Yuki Tsunoda remains in one seat, it is not Daniel Ricciardo who will be joining him, but 22-year-old New Zealander Liam Lawson, who has been eagerly awaiting the opportunity. In a candid revelation, Lawson revealed some inside details about how this move has been in the making for some time, and how Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner set the stage for his arrival long ago.

Horner’s promise: a plan in motion

In a recent episode of the F1 Nation podcast, Liam Lawson gave a behind-the-scenes look at how he was assured of a place on the F1 grid long before the announcement was made. According to Lawson, Horner had promised him that he would be given another chance in F1 during the 2023 season.

“I knew last year that my opportunity was temporary,” Lawson explained.

“It was about giving myself a chance to secure a full-time seat. And now I have that opportunity.”

Lawson went on to explain that the plan for him to step into the cockpit had been communicated well in advance, with Horner giving his word that a seat would open up for him.

“Christian (Horner) told me a year ago, when I got out of the car, ‘I give you my word that I will have you in a cockpit sometime next year’. So I always knew that was the intention and it was discussed,” Lawson revealed.

Lawson’s stand-in role for Ricciardo in 2023

Liam Lawson’s first taste of Formula One came when he filled in for Daniel Ricciardo during the 2023 season when the Australian was sidelined with a hand injury.

Lawson competed in five races in Ricciardo’s absence, scoring two points – an impressive feat for a rookie thrust into the spotlight. These performances, coupled with his consistent development as a driver, laid the foundations for him to be considered for a full-time seat.

However, Ricciardo’s performances in 2024 fell short of expectations and whispers of a potential driver change gained traction as the season progressed. After the Singapore Grand Prix, both Red Bull and sister team Racing Bull decided to move forward with Lawson, sidelining Ricciardo.

Is Ricciardo’s F1 career over?

While Lawson’s rise has undoubtedly been impressive, it raises questions about the future of Daniel Ricciardo. The veteran driver, once a fan favourite and podium regular, has endured a difficult few years.

Despite hopes that a return to a competitive seat could reignite his form, Ricciardo’s time with the Racing Bulls has failed to deliver the results the team had hoped for in 2024.

Now, with Lawson stepping in for the final six races of the current season, Ricciardo’s F1 career appears to be in jeopardy – at least for the foreseeable future. But as Lawson made clear in his comments, Horner’s promise to him was not necessarily tied to Ricciardo’s downfall.

“Formula One is a rollercoaster and things change every weekend,” said Lawson.

“Obviously, if I’m going to drive, someone else has to go. But there was no clear plan for me to replace Ricciardo. It wasn’t like they said, ‘In 12 months’ time you’re going to swap places with this person. Instead, they told me, ‘We’re going to offer you a seat, but we don’t know where yet.”

Lawson’s comments underline the unpredictable nature of Formula One, where driver line-ups can change rapidly, often as a result of performance, injury or behind-the-scenes decisions. It appears that while Lawson was always in Horner’s long-term plans, Ricciardo’s exit was only set in stone when it became clear that his results were not up to the team’s expectations.

Critical six-race test for Lawson

With the remaining six races of the 2024 season now serving as a testing ground, Lawson knows the weight of the opportunity ahead of him. His current contract only guarantees him a seat for these final races, meaning his future with Racing Bulls – and potentially Red Bull – will depend on how well he performs alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

Christian Horner recently addressed Lawson’s situation on the same podcast, explaining that the young New Zealander’s performances could open doors for him in the future.

“Liam has six races to show what he can do. If he impresses there could be opportunities for him at Red Bull in the future,” Horner hinted, leaving the door open for Lawson to earn a more permanent place in the Red Bull family.

For Lawson, it’s a golden opportunity not only to establish himself within the Racing Bulls, but also to put himself on Red Bull’s radar for potential promotion. His solid performances as Ricciardo’s deputy last year earned him plaudits, but this new opportunity allows him to prove his consistency and competitiveness over a longer period of time.

Lawson’s F1 Future: A glimpse of what’s possible

Horner’s promise has set the stage for what could be a bright future in F1 for Liam Lawson. If the young driver can seize the moment and deliver strong performances in the final races of the season, he could find himself in contention for bigger opportunities – perhaps even a seat at Red Bull in the coming years.

Looking further ahead, if Lawson can outperform Tsunoda and consistently challenge for points, it’s not out of the question for Red Bull to consider him as a future partner for Max Verstappen. While that may be a long way off, Lawson’s current opportunity is the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance, and a testament to his potential as a future F1 star.

For now, all eyes will be on Lawson as he takes to the track at the US Grand Prix and beyond. With Ricciardo’s future uncertain and the next generation of talent ready to stake their claim, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the young New Zealander.

F1’s ever-changing landscape

As Lawson himself has noted, F1 is unpredictable and the dynamics between teams and drivers can change rapidly. While his rise has come at the expense of Ricciardo, Lawson’s ascent to the cockpit has been a long time coming, with the backing of one of the most influential figures in the sport – Christian Horner.

It could be the end of an era for Daniel Ricciardo, but nothing is ever certain in F1. Ricciardo may yet find his way back to the grid, while Lawson will now have to prove he deserves to stay. With six crucial races to go, the world will be watching to see if the youngster can seize the opportunity that has been a year in the making.

MORE F1 NEWS – Extraordinary: Horner blames Newey for Red Bull’s troubles

Sport can truly be a wonderful thing. Fantastical scripts evolve during sporting competition where in the movie theatre would be slammed as unrealistic. This year Formula One is off the preprepared script which wrote in another year of domination for both the team and Max Verstappen.

The incredible turnaround during a single season is almost unheard of with McLaren now favourites for the constructors’ championship and Lando Norris in with a shout of the drivers’ crown. In fact, were Red Bull to lose both F1 titles this season, a crisis would be declared to have taken place in Milton Keynes.

Yet for now, Vertsappen and Horner battle on hoping the technical team back at base can solve the RB20’s current woes. Of course Red Bull would be comfortably leading the constructors’ championship had Sergio Perez performed like…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
