Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 career appears to be nearing a dramatic conclusion, with growing reports that the Australian driver is on the verge of stepping away from the cockpit for good. The rumours surrounding his potential retirement have gained momentum over recent days, and while the Formula 1 circus reached Singapore, questions about his future swirled in the paddock.
Despite this, those in charge at Red Bull Racing (RB) remained tight-lipped, sidestepping inquiries about Ricciardo’s status. The 35-year-old himself seemed caught off guard by the speculation, and recent reports suggest he’s not only saddened by the situation but also angry at how it has been handled by his superiors.
As the dust settles from the Singapore Grand Prix, the signs indicate that Ricciardo may not be behind the wheel when the championship reconvenes in Austin, Texas for the next race. This points to an abrupt and rather bitter end for one of Formula 1’s most beloved drivers.

Singapore Sends a Subtle Signal
One of the most telling signs of Ricciardo’s impending departure came in the form of a somewhat symbolic gesture during the Singapore Grand Prix. The point awarded for the fastest lap of the race was interpreted by many as a parting gift to Ricciardo from Red Bull Racing. However, what unfolded behind the scenes in the paddock painted a far more poignant picture.
Long-time Formula 1 photographer Kym Illman, who has captured many of the sport’s most emotional moments, was on hand to witness what he described as Ricciardo’s personal farewell.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Illman described how Ricciardo was the last driver to leave the paddock after the race, making a personal effort to say goodbye to not only his fellow drivers but also each member of his team.
The images of Ricciardo leaving the circuit in the early hours of the morning have stirred up emotions across the Formula 1 world.
“At 1:46 a.m., Daniel Ricciardo left the paddock for the last time as a Formula 1 driver,” Illman stated in his video. The moment marked the end of an era, with Ricciardo, who has long been a fan favourite for his trademark grin and aggressive driving style, seeming to accept that his time in the cockpit may indeed be over.

“Bizarre and Heartbreaking” Farewell
Illman described the scenes in Singapore as “bizarre and heartbreaking,” explaining that the paddock appeared to be saying goodbye to a driver who had not yet been officially dismissed.
“Is this speculation? No,” Illman said.
“Daniel, like the rest of the paddock, no longer had any doubts about his future. A lot of tears were shed.”
The surreal atmosphere in Singapore was only heightened by the fact that no formal announcement regarding Ricciardo’s future has been made. Yet, the actions and emotions on display strongly suggested that his departure from Formula 1 is all but confirmed, despite the lack of an official statement from Red Bull or Ricciardo himself.
Ricciardo’s Anger and Frustration with Red Bull bosses
While the end of Ricciardo’s driving career is undoubtedly emotional, it is also tinged with frustration. Reports from US broadcaster ESPN suggest that Ricciardo is far from content with how the situation has been handled. According to sources close to the driver, Ricciardo is angry with the Red Bull management, accusing them of failing to inform him about his impending departure before the Singapore Grand Prix.
Instead, the Australian driver was left to face an onslaught of questions from the media, blindsided by the rumours swirling around his future.
This lack of communication reportedly left Ricciardo feeling disrespected, especially given his long-standing relationship with the Red Bull organisation. He had rejoined the team in 2023 after previous stints with Renault and McLaren, hoping to reignite his career. Now, it seems, he may be saying goodbye to the sport that has defined much of his adult life, and not on his terms.

Internal Strife at Red Bull
The lack of transparency surrounding Ricciardo’s future seems to be a symptom of deeper divisions within Red Bull’s management team. According to ESPN, there is an internal rift, with one faction, led by team principal Christian Horner, still advocating for Ricciardo to remain behind the wheel.
However, this pro-Ricciardo faction is reportedly in the minority, as a larger group within the team favours making a change.
While it remains unclear exactly when Red Bull will make an official announcement, many speculate that Ricciardo’s dismissal could be confirmed in the coming days. With the Formula 1 season moving swiftly towards its conclusion, the timing of this announcement will be critical for Red Bull’s future strategy as well as Ricciardo’s next steps, whether they be in Formula 1 or elsewhere.

A Complex Legacy
For now, Ricciardo’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, but the writing seems to be on the wall. His departure would mark the end of a career that has seen the Australian achieve eight Grand Prix victories, and while his time in the cockpit may be over, his legacy in the sport is sure to endure.
Ricciardo’s charisma, tenacity, and memorable moments on the track have endeared him to fans across the globe, making his departure from Formula 1 not just the end of a chapter, but the close of a beloved era.
As Red Bull grapples with the internal fallout of this decision, fans and commentators alike are left reflecting on what Ricciardo’s departure means for the sport and how it was handled behind the scenes. Whether Ricciardo himself chooses to remain in the Formula 1 world in another capacity or moves on to new ventures, his presence in the paddock will undoubtedly be missed.

MORE F1 NEWS: Red Bull accused of a “lack of respect”
Red Bull Racing have proven to be a laser sharp Formula One team when it comes to winning races and championships unlike McLaren who have gifted Max Verstappen ten points this season by falling to prioritise Lando Norris in his chase down of the world champion drivers’ lead this year.
In their nineteen year history Red Bull have ditched more drivers mid-season than any other team since 2005. Daniel Kvyat was bumped down from his race seat alongside Max Verstappen as Alex Albon was promoted during the 2019 season.
Nyck de Vries suffered a similar fate in 2023 when after just ten races in the V-CARB team he was replaced by Ricciardo for the remainder of the season. Now it appears Ricciardo too is set to be ditched from V-CARB with six race weekends remaining in the 2024 competition…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
With over 30 years of experience in Formula 1 as an insider journalist, I have built trusted connections across the paddock, from race engineers and mechanics to senior team figures. At The Judge 13, I and a handful of trusted colleagues share exclusive Formula 1 news, expert analysis and behind-the-scenes stories you will not find in mainstream motorsport media.

Everyone is now sympathising with Daniel for the lack of respect shown to him by Red Bull, however the media must also share some guilt. You have been writing, speculating, questioning, and pressuring Daniel for answers, thus putting him under extra pressure to perform, which he didnt need. RB havent helped with poor strategies and a car that really just isnt competitive.
Spot on John. It is almost like they create the momentum that creates the news rather than just reporting it. Luckily most of us will never be the subject of a media feeding frenzy as it must be a lonely and frightening place.
I’m assuming that Red Bull have now given up the fight for the Constructors championship because they cannot win it with Perez. Could Daniel have done any worse than Checo for the remaining races?
