Formula 1 rivalry escalates between Wolff & Horner as tensions flare, Christian Horner targets Mercedes’ George Russell – The long-standing rivalry between the Mercedes and Red Bull Formula One teams has flared up again, with tensions between team bosses Toto Wolff and Christian Horner boiling over.
A new row has erupted after Horner made public comments about Mercedes driver George Russell, prompting Wolff to fire back with a stinging retort of his own.

The latest spat came after Horner, the Red Bull team principal, publicly hinted at his interest in Russell, suggesting that Red Bull could be a potential destination for the British driver when his Mercedes contract expires. However, Mercedes team boss Wolff was quick to hit back, accusing Horner of deliberately trying to provoke.

Wolff’s response: “Horner always trying to stir up trouble”
Toto Wolff did not hold back in his response, joking that Horner’s comments were designed to “stir up trouble” in the paddock. Speaking after the Singapore Grand Prix, the 52-year-old Austrian made it clear that he saw Horner’s comments as part of the mind games that often play out between rival teams.
“Christian Horner is always trying to stir up trouble,” Wolff said in a post-race interview with *Sky*. However, the Mercedes boss remained calm, admitting that such provocations are “part of the game” in the high-stakes environment of Formula One.
Despite the tension, Wolff reassured Mercedes fans and supporters that George Russell remains firmly committed to the Silver Arrows.
“George is a Mercedes driver, he always has been and hopefully he will always be,” Wolff reiterated. He also pointed to Russell’s long-term contract with Mercedes, saying: “We have a long-term contract with him.”
Russell joined Mercedes from Williams in 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s brightest talents. His contract with the Silver Arrows was extended last summer until the end of 2025, a clear indication that Mercedes see him as a cornerstone of their future plans. Russell already has two race wins to his name, one in São Paulo in 2022 and another at Spielberg this season.

Horner hints at future driver moves
While Toto Wolff was keen to play down any possibility of Russell leaving Mercedes, Christian Horner’s comments have certainly added fuel to the fire. Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, the Red Bull boss hinted that he is keeping his options open regarding his future driver line-up. With an eye on the long term, Horner stated that Red Bull would take time to evaluate potential driver pairings, but what came next was the comment that sparked the latest clash.
“We are not afraid to look outside the narrow pool of drivers,” Horner said in an interview with *Sky Sports*.
“George Russell is out of contract after next season – it would be foolish not to consider him.”
The comment clearly struck a chord with Wolff, who sees Russell as a key asset to Mercedes’ future, particularly as the team looks beyond the Lewis Hamilton era. However, it appears that Horner is keen to explore all options as Red Bull continue to dominate the current season with Max Verstappen at the helm.

Red Bull v Mercedes: Rivalry continues
The heated exchange between Horner and Wolff is just the latest episode in a season-long saga of verbal barbs between the two team principals. The rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull has been one of the dominant storylines in recent years, with battles both on and off the track.
Earlier this season, Mercedes reportedly showed an interest in luring reigning world champion Max Verstappen away from Red Bull, a move that was predictably met with resistance from Horner and his team.
While Verstappen remains firmly ensconced in Red Bull’s future plans, Horner’s comments about Russell have raised fresh questions about potential driver moves in the coming seasons.
Red Bull accused of a “lack of respect”
Looking to the future: Russell and Mercedes
For now, George Russell remains fully focused on his career at Mercedes, where he is set to become the team’s lead driver in the near future. With Lewis Hamilton expected to move to Ferrari next season, Russell will take on greater responsibilities, including mentoring highly-rated rookie Kimi Antonelli, who is tipped to make his F1 debut for Mercedes soon.
As F1 teams continue to plan their strategies for the coming years, the prospect of drivers moving between rival teams is always a tantalising one. Horner’s comments about Russell underline the fact that no driver’s future is set in stone, and the complex web of contracts and negotiations means that surprises are always possible.
A season of mind games
The ongoing war of words between Christian Horner and Toto Wolff highlights the intense competition between Red Bull and Mercedes, not only on the track but also behind the scenes. As both teams battle for supremacy in Formula One, the strategic battle for the best driver line-ups is as important as the racing itself.
While Wolff remains adamant that George Russell’s future lies with Mercedes, Horner’s willingness to stir the pot adds an extra layer of drama to an already exciting season. With driver contracts and team strategies constantly evolving, the rivalry between these two team bosses shows no signs of cooling down any time soon.

Red Bull Racing have proven to be a laser sharp Formula One team when it comes to winning races and championships unlike McLaren who have gifted Max Verstappen ten points this season by falling to prioritise Lando Norris in his chase down of the world champion drivers’ lead this year.
In their nineteen year history Red Bull have ditched more drivers mid-season than any other team since 2005. Daniel Kvyat was bumped down from his race seat alongside Max Verstappen as Alex Albon was promoted during the 2019 season.
Nyck de Vries suffered a similar fate in 2023 when after just ten races in the V-CARB team he was replaced by Ricciardo for the remainder of the season. Now it appears Ricciardo too is set to be ditched from V-CARB with six race weekends remaining in the 2024 competition…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
