As Formula One’s winter testing came to a close at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain, anticipation for next week’s 2024 season opener reached a fever pitch. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets on the final day of testing, beating George Russell’s Mercedes by just 0.046 seconds.
However, Leclerc was quick to acknowledge the formidable pace of world champion Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team, admitting they have a “good head start” into the season. Further, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso issues a ‘bombshell’ statement to the press following the final test day.

Surprising performances and strategic decisions
The test sessions produced some surprises, with China’s Zhou Guanyu setting an impressive third-fastest time in a Sauber, signalling potential upsets in the races to come. Verstappen, who will be chasing a fourth consecutive title in 2024, was fourth quickest.
It’s worth noting that Verstappen’s strategy involved using softer tyres, a decision that likely contributed to his relative slowdown on the day, but doesn’t detract from Red Bull’s overall performance.

Ferrari optimism tempered by realism
The test days saw Ferrari make a strong statement on track, with Leclerc’s performance following on from teammate Carlos Sainz’s ‘pole position’ the day before. Sainz’s prowess was underlined by the fact that he was the only driver to break the 1min 30sec barrier during the three days of testing. Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur expressed his satisfaction with the results, noting that the car’s performance was in line with the team’s expectations.
“I think I can say that we are off to a good start, if only by looking at our own performances,” said Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur.
Despite these promising signs, Leclerc remained cautiously optimistic about Ferrari’s chances against pre-season favourites Red Bull. His realism reflects the competitive gap that Ferrari must close if they are to challenge Red Bull’s supremacy.
“Everything we expected from this car, we got it on the track, so that’s a good thing,” said Leclerc
“For the moment, Red Bull still has a good head start,”

Mercedes: A year of evolution and caution
Mercedes brought a much-improved car to Bahrain for the 2024 season, one that differs in many ways from its predecessor. Lewis Hamilton, facing his final season with Mercedes, emphasised the need for further improvements. While acknowledging the team’s solid foundation, Hamilton pointed out that there’s still plenty of work to be done to refine the package and mount a credible challenge for the title.
“We know we’ve got work to do and we’re not yet where we want to be,” he admitted.
“We knew that would be the case coming into the test though. We’ve got a great platform to build on. We’ll go away and work hard over the next couple of days to go through all the data from the test,
“I’m really excited for the start of the season next week and we’ll be heading into it in good shape.”
A record-breaking season ahead
With the 2024 Formula One season set to kick off in Bahrain on 2 March with a record 24 races, the stakes and excitement have never been higher. The final winter tests have laid the foundations for what promises to be a fiercely contested championship.
Teams and drivers will now turn their attention to fine-tuning their strategies and machines, all with the aim of upsetting the pecking order established by Red Bull.

Alonso’s bombshell statement
Fernando Alonso, the veteran Aston Martin driver and two-time World Champion, has made a bold statement that could set the tone for the year.
Following the conclusion of pre-season testing in Bahrain, Alonso has effectively announced the outcome of the season, hinting at a continuation of Red Bull’s formidable presence on the track whilst simultaneously damning Verstappen’s team mate Sergio Perez.
Red Bull’s continued dominance
Alonso’s insights come at a critical time, just one week before the official start of the season. His comments shed light on the general mood in the paddock: Red Bull are set to maintain their stranglehold on F1, with Max Verstappen expected to secure a fourth consecutive title.
“I think Max is the world champion and Red Bull is dominating the sport. Also, the concept that they presented this year, it’s also a surprise,” he said.
“At the moment, we just have to watch them and see how they perform.
“I think 19 drivers in the paddock now will think that [they] will not win the championship.
“It happens 99% of the time in your career. This is a brutal sport.”
It’s a view not only shared by Alonso, but also by the 19 other drivers who he says are now fighting for second place. The brutal nature of the sport, as Alonso describes it, sets a high bar for competition, often leaving little room for upsets in the hierarchy.
His statement says a lot about his belief of Perez’s lack of ability to challenge Verstappen in the same car.

Analysing the preseason and looking ahead
Pre-season testing in Bahrain was a litmus test for the teams, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell showing promising speeds, but Red Bull’s performance remained a cut above the rest. Alonso was openly sceptical about the chances of other teams breaking Red Bull’s winning streak, which has seen them dominate the 2023 season with victories in 21 of 22 races.
“I think it’s difficult to tell now [if we have a race winning car],” says Alonso,
“I would say, I think after seeing Max and the Red Bull car this year, there are fewer chances for everybody to win a race this year. But this is how it is.”
Despite the competitive landscape, Alonso shared some personal victories and revealed his exceptional level of fitness, the best he has ever achieved in pre-season testing.
However, he remains pragmatic and understands that physical fitness does not directly correlate with success on the track, as his challenging 2015 season has shown.
“I was super fit, happy and motivated in [2015] and I scored 11 points [finishing 17th in the championship]. So, this sport is not always what you feel or what you do.”

Anticipation builds for Bahrain
With the new season set to kick off in Bahrain on 2 March with a record 24 races, the Formula One community is buzzing with anticipation. Alonso’s predictions, based on the realities of the sport’s competitive dynamics, underline the challenges and aspirations of teams and drivers as they prepare for another exhilarating year of Formula One racing.
As the engines rev up for the opening race, all eyes will be on Red Bull as the paddock waits to see if anyone can disrupt their winning formula.
