Family lawyer: “Final report on Michael Schumacher’s health”

More than ten years have passed since the tragic skiing accident in Meribel that changed the life of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher forever. The seven-time world champion, revered for his extraordinary achievements on the racetrack, suffered severe brain injuries in the accident, leading to ongoing speculation and concern about his health.

Since the accident, Schumacher has been living in Switzerland, far from the public eye. His family, led by his wife Corinna, have maintained a strict policy of confidentiality about his health, a stance that has been both respected and a source of intense speculation.

Despite the worldwide interest in his condition, Schumacher has not made any public appearances, adding to the mystery surrounding his current condition. Now the family lawyer speaks out to the German press.

The fateful day in Meribel

Schumacher, an experienced skier, was on a family holiday in the upmarket ski resort of Meribel in the French Alps. Known for its picturesque views and challenging slopes, Meribel is a popular destination for ski enthusiasts. On that December morning, Schumacher, accompanied by his son and a small group of friends, set off for a day on the slopes.

The accident occurred while Schumacher was skiing in an off-piste area – terrain away from the groomed slopes, typically more challenging and with natural obstacles. Despite wearing a helmet, Schumacher fell and hit his head on a rock. The force of the impact was so great that he suffered serious head injuries. The helmet he was wearing may have reduced the severity of his injuries, but it was not enough to prevent significant damage.

Immediate medical attention and surgery

Schumacher was airlifted to Grenoble Hospital within minutes of the accident. The medical team quickly assessed his condition and determined that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury.

He underwent two operations to relieve pressure on his brain and remove haematomas. Medical staff placed him in a medically-induced coma to stabilise his condition and allow his brain to heal.

Vettel: “Not doing well”

Sebastian Vettel, a fellow Formula 1 driver and close associate of Schumacher’s, recently commented on Schumacher’s health, suggesting that the F1 legend is “not doing well”.

This brief glimpse, although lacking in detail, underlines the seriousness of Schumacher’s condition and the long road he and his family have travelled since the accident.

Brothers emotional reflection

In a candid conversation with German newspaper Bild, Ralf Schumacher shared his heartfelt feelings about the incident that dramatically changed his brother’s life.

“I miss my Michael from back then,” he confessed, highlighting the deep personal loss he feels. The accident not only changed Michael’s life, but also had a profound effect on those closest to him, including Ralf, who looked up to his brother as a coach, mentor and friend.

Ralf emphasised the profound impact Michael’s accident had on his children, underlining how life’s unpredictability and unfairness can have far-reaching consequences. The Schumacher family have faced an enormous challenge in coping with the aftermath of an event that has changed their family dynamic and their daily lives.

Schumacher’s lawyer on “the final report”

Felix Damm, Schumacher’s lawyer, has shed light on the family’s decision to keep details of Schumacher’s health private. In an interview with German media outlet LTO, as quoted by SI.com, Damm explained that releasing a final health report would have led to endless media scrutiny and pressure for constant updates.

“It was always about protecting private things. We considered whether a final report about Michael’s health could be the right way to do this”

This relentless attention would have invaded the family’s privacy, something they were keen to protect.

“But that wouldn’t have been the end of it and there would have had to be constantly updated ‘water level reports’ and it would not have been up to the family when the media interest in the story stopped.”

“They [the media] could pick up on such a report again and again and as ‘and what does it look like now?’ one, two, three months or years after the message,” he added. “If we then wanted to take action against this reporting, we would have to deal with the argument of voluntary self-disclosure,” he added.

Innovative care strategies

A report in the German tabloid BILD revealed an interesting aspect of Schumacher’s care regime. He was reportedly driven around in a Mercedes AMG car, a nod to his long and illustrious career in Formula One. This was done in the hope that familiar sounds would stimulate his brain, a creative approach given his deep connection to racing.

Schumacher’s care involves a dedicated team of 15 doctors and assistants who provide 24-hour support from a private clinic in his former office. This level of care underlines the complexity of his condition and the family’s commitment to his wellbeing.

Schumacher’s legacy in F1

Despite his absence from the public eye, Schumacher’s legacy in Formula One remains unparalleled. He won seven F1 world titles, including five in a row with Ferrari, and made a celebrated return to the sport with Mercedes in 2010. His record of seven world titles was eventually equalled by Lewis Hamilton in 2021, a testament to the high standard Schumacher set in the sport.

The ongoing interest in Michael Schumacher’s health is a reflection of his impact on Formula One and his fans around the world. While his current condition remains largely private, the respect and admiration for him continues unabated.

As the world hopes for the unlikely positive news about his recovery, the Schumacher family’s desire for privacy at this difficult time is a poignant reminder of the human side of sporting legends and the personal struggles they face away from the limelight.

With so many news articles coming from the German media on Michael, one has to wonder whether this is due to a lack of F1 news in general now that the racing season has finished, or something tragic will be expected soon and the public is being conditioned for the news.

    • God won’t help, he’s too busy giving aids to children in Africa, earth quakes in Japan, volcanic eruptions in Iceland, tornados in America, and floods and droughts throughout the world. Which is very impressive for something that only exists in people’s imagination.

  1. He’s got to be in a really bad way with being so private but i’m sure for his many fans from all over the world that have contributed to his vast wages want to know exactly how he is! He’s just hidden away for his many fans to never see him again. Sad.

  2. Think we can guess that he’s probably in a vegetative state but for his many fans from allover the world that have contributed to his vast fortunes, I think it’s unfair that he’s hidden himself away and nothing is being said about him. His choice I know but me personally, I think it’s unfair to his many fans.

  3. Some people prefer isolation, instead of constant guessing and wanting attention about Schumacher condition. It’s fairly clear he is not with us mentally anymore. His body is alive, but he’s not there. There is obviously no improvement in his condition, and I have lots of kudos for his family, keeping him out of the public eye. Remember Christopher Reeve, when he broke his neck in a gymkana, and he wished he was dead rather than paralyzed.
So I can just pray, that if there’s a guy up there that we can’t understand as he’s too big. The ending of this saga will bring relief to his family. It’s very sad and very understandable.
