Toto Wolff confirms Mercedes’ 2027 driver plan but refuses to close the door on Max Verstappen – Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expects George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season, insisting stability is the priority despite continued speculation linking Max Verstappen with the Silver Arrows.
However, the Austrian stopped short of ruling out a future move for the four-time world champion, acknowledging that Verstappen remains on Mercedes’ radar over the longer term.
Toto Wolff expects Mercedes to retain Russell and Antonelli
Speaking to Sky, Wolff indicated that Mercedes’ current driver pairing is set to continue into next season, although no official announcement has yet been made.
“We haven’t officially said anything yet, but given how the season is going, it’s the only logical consequence at this point,” Wolff said.
Mercedes has endured a challenging spell despite remaining at the top of the Constructors’ Championship. Reliability concerns have affected recent race weekends, with George Russell reporting a lack of battery power during the Belgian Grand Prix.
Wolff believes continuity is the right approach while the team works through those technical issues.
“We need to make the car more stable, and starting to change drivers now isn’t the right thing to do,” he explained.
Russell currently trails teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 50 points in the Drivers’ Championship, but Wolff’s comments suggest the Briton’s place within the team is not under threat.
Verstappen remains a long-term possibility
Although Mercedes appears settled on its immediate plans, Wolff once again refused to completely dismiss the prospect of signing Max Verstappen in the future.
The Dutch driver has been linked with Mercedes repeatedly over the past two seasons, even though there is currently no indication that a move is imminent.
Wolff admitted Verstappen remains a driver the team would naturally consider if circumstances changed.
“We’re not afraid of potentially having both of them [Antonelli and Verstappen] in the team at some point,” he said.
The remark is unlikely to silence speculation surrounding Verstappen’s long-term future, particularly after recent comments from the Red Bull driver suggesting he could walk away from Formula 1 whenever he chooses if he no longer enjoys competing.
Mercedes boss prioritises stability over major changes
Despite the continued rumours, Wolff stressed that Mercedes is focused on developing its current project rather than introducing unnecessary disruption.
“I’m happy” with how things are progressing with Antonelli and Russell, he said.
“We have made great progress as a team. Adding another variable now is not, in my opinion, the right thing for our long-term development.”
Mercedes currently leads the Constructors’ Championship by 73 points over Ferrari, while Antonelli holds a 45-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton at the top of the Drivers’ standings.
However, Wolff believes there is still plenty of work ahead before the Italian can secure his maiden world championship.
“It won’t be a walk in the park,” he said of Antonelli’s title chances.
With Mercedes prioritising consistency for 2027, Russell and Antonelli appear firmly in place for another campaign together. Yet Wolff’s latest comments ensure Verstappen’s name remains part of the conversation, leaving the possibility of one of Formula 1’s biggest driver moves alive for the future.
