Schumacher’s ‘Mamma’ ponders a special final meeting

Last Updated on December 20 2023, 4:20 pm

Rossella Giannini, affectionately known as “Mamma Rossella”, vividly recalls her unique relationship with Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher.

As head chef at the Montana restaurant near Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in Maranello, Giannini’s culinary creations, especially her tagliatelle al ragù, became a favourite with Schumacher during his championship-winning years with Ferrari.

Nestled in the heart of Maranello, a stone’s throw from Ferrari’s iconic Fiorano test track, Montana Restaurant is a culinary gem steeped in the history and tradition of Formula One. More than just a restaurant, Montana is a sanctuary where the legends of the track meet the legends of the kitchen.

The Montana Restaurant has long been a favourite dining spot for Ferrari drivers, team members and executives. Its proximity to Fiorano has made it an unofficial meeting place, where strategies are discussed over fine Italian cuisine and victories celebrated with a toast. The walls, decorated with photos and memorabilia, tell countless stories of Ferrari’s illustrious past.

A menu steeped in tradition

Montana’s menu offers a variety of traditional Italian dishes with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From homemade pasta to succulent meats and fresh salads, each dish is prepared with the same care and passion that Ferrari puts into its cars.

For Formula 1 enthusiasts, Montana offers a unique experience. It’s a place where fans can immerse themselves in the history of the sport while enjoying exceptional food. The restaurant has become a place of pilgrimage for F1 fans visiting Maranello to experience a piece of Ferrari history.

Over the years, Montana has seen many champions come and go, but its essence remains unchanged. Mamma Rossella continues to run the restaurant with the same passion and dedication, ensuring that the legacy of Montana and its connection to Ferrari lives on.

While Montana respects its traditional roots, it also evolves with the times. The menu is occasionally updated, introducing new flavours while retaining the classic dishes that made it famous. This blend of tradition and innovation is what keeps Montana at the forefront of Maranello’s culinary scene.

A culinary icon in the F1 world

At the heart of Montana’s charm is its chef and owner, Rossella Giannini, whose Montana restaurant has long been a staple for Ferrari drivers and staff. Her connection with Schumacher, however, went beyond the usual chef-patron relationship.

It was a bond that saw her become part of the extended Ferrari family, earning her the nickname “Mamma Rossella” within the F1 community.

A memorable final meeting

In the autumn of 2013, Giannini saw Schumacher for the last time before his tragic skiing accident. She cherishes this particular memory, not only because of Schumacher’s visit, but also because he brought along Sebastian Vettel, another F1 great and future Ferrari driver.

Schumacher, keen to ensure Vettel felt welcome at Ferrari, introduced him to Giannini’s hospitality.

“Maikel wanted Sebastian to feel welcomed straight away,” reported “Mamma Rossella” to Sport Bild. She was happy to comply with Schumi’s request: “I welcomed him with open arms. Sebastian has a good heart – like Maikel.”

Rossella always chooses the English pronunciation for Schumi’s first name – this time taken with it.

At the time, Vettel had just snatched the world title from Ferrari and Fernando Alonso for the fourth time in a row. His move from Red Bull to the Scuderia for the 2015 season had long since been confirmed.

Vettel, who joined Ferrari in 2015, continued the tradition of visiting Giannini’s restaurant, as did Mick Schumacher, Michael’s son, until the end of 2022.

This continuity underlines the enduring legacy of Michael Schumacher within the Ferrari family and the wider F1 community.

“I don’t want to disturb them. The situation is difficult enough for the relatives,” said Giannini: “Every now and then I talk to people from Ferrari and ask, but I don’t want to impose myself.”

Respecting the Schumacher family’s privacy

Despite her close relationship, Giannini maintains a respectful distance from the Schumacher family, understanding the sensitivity and privacy they require. She occasionally enquires about Schumacher through Ferrari connections, but is careful not to impose herself on the family.

“I can hardly believe that the accident was ten years ago.” says Giannini,

“In the meantime, I was able to make peace with the situation. I no longer suffer, but remember the beautiful moments.”

Ten years after Schumacher’s accident, Giannini reflects on the passage of time and her journey towards acceptance. She no longer dwells on the sadness, but chooses to remember the good moments she shared with Schumacher. Her fond memories serve as a testament to the impact Schumacher had on those around him, both as a champion driver and as a person.

As Giannini continues to run her restaurant, her dishes and memories keep alive the spirit of a champion who touched the lives of many both on and off the track.
