Ferrari admit ‘talks with Hamiton’

Last Updated on December 19 2023, 12:04 am

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur recently shed some light on the long-running speculation surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s potential move to Ferrari. In an interview full of his characteristic humour, Vasseur addressed the rumours linking the record-breaking F1 world champion to the Scuderia, as well as the future of Max Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton, who has been a fixture at Mercedes since 2013, has often been the subject of rumours linking him with a move to Ferrari. Despite a successful stint with Mercedes, where he won numerous titles, the team’s dominance has waned in recent years, fuelling further speculation.

Hamilton himself once described driving for Ferrari as “every racing driver’s dream”, fuelling rumours of a possible move.

The Formula 1 world has long been gripped by a tantalising question: Will Lewis Hamilton, one of the sport’s greatest drivers, ever grace the cockpit of a Ferrari before hanging up his racing gloves? The speculation, a mixture of fan fantasy and paddock gossip, has persisted for years, fuelled by Hamilton’s own comments and the allure of the iconic Italian team.

The Hamilton-Ferrari connection

With a record seven world championships to his name, Lewis Hamilton has achieved almost everything possible in Formula One. His association with Mercedes is nothing short of legendary, resulting in a period of dominance rarely seen in the sport.

Yet the idea of Hamilton driving for Ferrari, a team synonymous with F1 history and prestige, has a romantic appeal that is hard to ignore.

Ferrari is more than just a racing team; it’s an institution with a rich heritage and an almost mystical aura. For any driver, the opportunity to drive for Ferrari is a dream, and for a champion like Hamilton, it could be the ultimate challenge and a fitting end to an illustrious career.

Hamilton’s own words

Fueling the speculation have been Hamilton’s own admiring comments about Ferrari. He has openly acknowledged the special place Ferrari holds in the world of motorsport and admitted that driving for the Scuderia is a dream for any driver. These comments, although often made in a light-hearted context, have been enough to keep the rumour mill churning.

Hamilton’s relationship with Mercedes, however, runs deep. The team has been his home since 2013, and together they have reached unprecedented heights. Leaving such a successful partnership for a stint at Ferrari, especially in the twilight of his career, could be seen as a risky move that may not be in line with his long-term legacy considerations.

Ferrari’s recent form and future direction also play a crucial role. The team is in a rebuilding phase, and while it has shown flashes of brilliance, it has yet to consistently challenge the sharp end for a title challenge.

Timing and career progression

Timing is everything in F1, and the window of opportunity for Hamilton to make such a monumental change is narrowing. As his career progresses into this latter period, the desire for new challenges will have to be weighed against the comfort of an established and successful team environment at Mercedes.

Ultimately, the decision for Hamilton may come down to how he envisions the endgame of his career. Joining Ferrari could be the ultimate challenge and a way to cement his status as a versatile and adaptable driver. However, staying with Mercedes and cementing his legacy there may be a more appealing and secure option.

Hamilton talks: Vasseur’s humorous response

In response to these persistent switch rumours, Ferrari team boss Vasseur took a humorous approach to the speculation in an interview with Corriere Dello Sport.

“We’ve been talking for 20 years,” he joked, referring to the persistent rumours about Hamilton and Ferrari. He added humorously: “If we had signed a contract every time we spoke, it would have cost me a fortune!” admitting that he’d spoken to Hamilton many times before, but not necessarily about a drive at Ferrari.

The Verstappen question

When the conversation turned to Max Verstappen, the current reigning champion at Red Bull, Vasseur continued his light-hearted approach. Acknowledging Verstappen’s obvious talent and appeal, he joked, “All ten team bosses would love to have him, but I think he has a contract until 2045,” humorously exaggerating Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull, which actually runs until 2028.

Vasseur advised focusing on Ferrari’s internal development rather than engaging in speculation about a Verstappen acquisition, recommending, “Let’s not waste energy talking about it, let’s focus on ourselves…”

Vasseur’s priority at the moment seems to be on the home front, specifically the future of current Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. With their contracts due to expire at the end of 2024, negotiations for extensions are reportedly underway, demonstrating Ferrari’s commitment to its existing line-up.

Vasseur’s comments reflect not only his humour, but also a pragmatic approach to the rumour mill that is Formula One. While the prospect of seeing a driver like Hamilton or Verstappen in Ferrari red excites fans and media alike, Vasseur’s focus remains firmly on running Ferrari with its current talent and resources.

His approach underlines the importance of stability and internal development in a sport where speculation and rumour are ever-present.
