Red Bull officially warn Perez

Veteran Red Bull driver Sergio Perez faces a crucial year ahead, with his future with the Formula 1 team hanging in the balance. Team principal Christian Horner has issued a stark warning…

Historically, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has often praised Sergio Perez for his psychological resilience, a crucial quality for a partnership with Max Verstappen. As Red Bull evaluates its driver options for 2025, Perez’s ability to cope with the intense pressure of being Verstappen’s teammate stands out as a key strength.

Perez, who faces the daunting task of retaining his seat beyond the 2024 season, has been overshadowed by Verstappen throughout their three seasons together. Despite this, Horner believes Perez’s mental toughness is commendable.

“If you’re not psychologically strong, you won’t be able to be [Max’s] teammate. It’s as simple as that,” Horner told the Sky F1 podcast.

The relentlessness of Verstappen

Verstappen’s exceptional performance, characterised by relentless pace and precision, sets a high bar for any teammate. “He’s just relentless in his pace, in the way he works,” said Horner. This high standard has been a challenging factor for Perez, especially given the expectations placed on him by “the most successful car in history”.

Despite not winning more than two races in such a dominant car, Perez’s ability to maintain a strong character in the face of Verstappen’s dominance has impressed Horner: “I think that’s one of the positives for Checo, he’s had the strength of character to deal with it,” he said. Horner acknowledged the difficulty of the role, noting that “it’s a tough job being [Verstappen’s] teammate”.

Reflecting on past experiences with Sebastian Vettel and now Verstappen, he underlined the immense challenge of being a teammate to such dominant figures.

“He’s certainly the best driver in F1 at the moment as a three-time world champion and to be his teammate is incredibly tough,” Horner concluded.

Red Bull and Horner warn Perez

Despite Horner’s plaudits for Perez, the Red Bull team boss had a stern message and official warning to Sergio Perez: perform or risk losing your seat. Perez must step up his game next season to secure his place at Red Bull.

Horner then didn’t mince his words when discussing Perez’s performance in comparison to teammate Max Verstappen.

“It’s his cockpit and only he can lose the cockpit,” said Horner. The comment suggests that while Perez’s seat is his for now, it’s not guaranteed for the future.

“Nothing is set in stone for 2025,” added Horner, underlining the high expectations for the next 24 races.

Of course, Horner is acutely aware that despite two years of total dominance, the rest of the top midfield are converging on performance increases and have started to challenge the Red Bull car for wins.

Using pressure as a motivator

Horner’s approach to raising the stakes for Perez appears to be deliberate. He believes that Perez performs best under pressure.

“Checo works best when he’s under pressure. I’ve seen that the whole time he’s been with us,” said Horner, hinting at a strategic move to motivate the Mexican to perform at his best.

In the 2023 season, Perez secured second place in the World Championship at the Formula One season finale. However, his 285 points paled in comparison to Verstappen’s astonishing 575. Perez’s nine podium finishes were also no match for Verstappen’s 19 race wins, highlighting a significant performance gap within the team.

Perez’s performance, particularly in the second half of the season, was marred by too many mistakes, leading to speculation about his future at Red Bull. With the presence of Daniel Ricciardo and rising star Liam Lawson in the team, Perez faces potential competition for his seat in 2024 if his performance doesn’t improve.

Perez’s response to the challenge

Aware of the scrutiny he faces, Pérez has expressed his intention to improve the consistency of his performance. In an interview with Motorsport.com, he stated his ambition for next season:

“I want to be able to achieve consistency and build a platform. This statement shows that Pérez recognises the need for improvement and is determined to rise to the challenge.”

The 2024 season is shaping up to be a crucial one for Sergio Perez. With Christian Horner’s warning shot, the message is clear: Perez must up his game to match the high standards set by his teammate and the team.

The coming season will test not only Perez’s racing skills, but also his ability to thrive under pressure, a factor that Horner believes is key to unlocking his full potential.
