As the 2023 Formula One season draws to a close, the Mercedes team are reflecting on a year that fell short of their championship-winning standards. However, former world champion Nico Rosberg is upbeat about the prospects for his old team in 2024.
Despite the trials and tribulations of the current season and a daunting gap to leaders Red Bull, Rosberg’s faith in the Brackley outfit remains unshaken.
Mercedes’ inconsistency a stumbling block
Rosberg acknowledges the flashes of brilliance Mercedes have shown, such as their competitive pace in Austin. “We’ve seen moments of brilliance from Mercedes recently, but they lack consistency,” he said at a sponsors’ event in Las Vegas.
His belief in a turnaround is based on first-hand experience of the team’s resilience and the enduring presence of its core members.
“If we look at Austin, they fought for the win there and had the fastest car over the weekend. So we can see that they’re starting to do that ‘To understand the car’,”

Swipe at Hamilton
When asked about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton winning an eighth world title in 2024, Rosberg’s response was measured. While he openly cheers for Mercedes’ success, his feelings towards Hamilton are more impartial.
“I would be happy if Mercedes won because that is my racing family from the past. As far as Lewis is concerned, I am neutral,” he said, alluding to their historically contentious partnership and subtly making a swipe at his former friend and team mate.

Sour relationship since Mercedes rivalry
Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton’s relationship soured during their time as teammates in the Mercedes Formula One team. Initially friends from their junior racing days, their camaraderie was put to the test as they became direct rivals for the F1 championship.
The intense on-track battles, strategic gamesmanship and team dynamics created a fractious atmosphere, with both drivers clashing both on and off the track. This competitive tension reached its peak during the 2016 season, when Rosberg won the championship and subsequently made the unexpected decision to retire from the sport, leaving a complex legacy of both rivalry and respect between the two champions.

Rosberg: An exciting championship
Rosberg’s overriding wish is for a return to a fiercely contested championship, regardless of the contenders, he said in Las Vegas:
“I just hope for an exciting championship again,” he said, emphasising his impartial stance on individual driver success. “May the best driver win. But when it comes down to it, I don’t take sides.”
Renowned for their resilience and technical prowess, the Mercedes team look ahead to 2024 with the promise of renewed strength and the potential to reclaim their place at the pinnacle of Formula One, according to the predictions of a former champion who knows the inner workings of the team only too well.

MORE F1 – Las Vegas GP: Ferrari take action over injustice
Seething Ferrari to act over Vegas injustice. Bernie Ecclestone was a crafty old dog and he often used the Formula One scheduling to move the conversation on from what may be a public relations nightmare. The first Grand Prix in Baku faced controversy because the government had been locking up journalists advocating free speech in the year before the race was to be held.
The Baku race was incredibly scheduled to begin its media day just over three days following the chequered flag at the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix. With no direct flights from Canada to Azerbaijan this restricted the…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
