Wolff appeals to shareholders

TJ13 reported recently that Daimler Benz has received heavy criticism from a number of its institutional investors for running a team in Formula 1. They object to racing in certain countries where human rights are not respected and further at the cost they see as diminishing shareholder value.

Toto Wolff speaks out in defence of the Stuttgart board. Whilst recognising that the views of shareholders should be considered he argues from a cost/value benefit the global car manufacturer will eventually benefit.

Toto Wolff sets matters straight

In an interview for Formula1.com Toto Wolff talks about expectations at Mercedes.

“As they (Mercedes) know I have put my neck on the line they know that I have no room for failure. Not only have I taken a personal risk by leaving Williams – where I have enjoyed working – but there is also a financial and economic side to it. There is a huge amount of trust on both sides and I am very happy having joined.”

I’m not really sure what Toto is inferring here, “You cannot run a Formula 1 operation in the UK out of Germany. It is not only a difference in mentality – there is definitely a difference (laughs) – but it is also about physically being there.

Running a company from a distance never really works, so the question is either you run it full time or you don’t. And if you don’t, then you rely on management. In the past I have done that, but it was not the role Mercedes had envisioned for me.”

Brawn: The fuller picture. Having asked the question in the end of year TJ13 questionnaire whether people were interested in ‘breaking news’ being delivered here, I was surprised how high the count was. So, although this week is unlikely to re-occur, I will endeavour to do what we did in the previous posting, when appropriate.

So, things are settling down and we can take a more considered view of the lie of the land. Here’s Ross’s comments in a more complete form – I was getting them by twitter and text before – so apologies if the final version differs slightly. I think the sentiment is the same and at times more surprising.

Ross was asked whether the recent events and the teams media management of matters would cause confusion in the way Mercedes will be run. “I am the team principal. I am in charge of sporting, technical and racing matters. There is another side of the business that I don’t want to get involved in – the commercial activities – [that] Toto will be doing [and which] are complementary to what I will be doing.

He asserts, “But everybody knows the only way a racing team will work is to have one reference, and I’m that reference.”
