Jenson Button fears Esteban Ocon has thrown away his F1 career after Haas fallout

Esteban Ocon’s Formula 1 future has become increasingly uncertain following his controversial departure from the Haas garage during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. Former world champion Jenson Button has delivered a particularly blunt assessment, warning that the Frenchman may have jeopardised his remaining opportunities in the sport.

Ocon was unexpectedly replaced by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa after the opening two practice sessions in Mexico City. The decision followed a disagreement between the driver and his team, with Button suggesting that an argument over tyre selection had escalated far beyond what should be expected during a Grand Prix weekend.

Speaking to Sky, Button said: “He may have thrown away the rest of his Formula 1 career.”

The comments represent a serious warning for Ocon, whose departure from Haas at the end of the current season has already been confirmed.

Ocon’s relationship with Haas reaches breaking point

The situation became public when Haas opted to remove Ocon from the remainder of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, handing his car to Japanese reserve driver Hirakawa.

Ocon subsequently acknowledged that a disagreement had taken place, describing it as a “discussion due to differing viewpoints”.

However, the 30-year-old firmly rejected allegations that the confrontation had involved physical violence. Haas, meanwhile, declined to provide further details about the circumstances, stating that it would not issue additional comments at that stage.

The precise events behind the disagreement therefore remain unclear. Nevertheless, the decision to replace an established race driver during a Grand Prix weekend underlined the seriousness of the breakdown in relations.

Button questions Ocon’s judgement after the disagreement

Button believes the disagreement should never have reached the point where Ocon was unable to continue driving.

The 2009 world champion acknowledged that the situation was particularly difficult because Haas had already decided to move in a different direction for the following season.

However, he argued that Ocon’s priority should have been demonstrating his ability behind the wheel, regardless of the circumstances surrounding his departure.

“It’s always difficult for a driver when your team is looking for another driver for the following year and you’re out,” Button explained.

“The best thing for him is and always will be to drive and work as hard and well as he can to show how good he is.”

Button was particularly frustrated that the disagreement reportedly centred on tyres during a practice session rather than a competitive situation during qualifying or the race.

“He can’t do that anymore because of a disagreement about the tyres – in practice! It’s not even about qualifying, it’s about practice! It frustrates me to see.”

He continued by highlighting the rarity of reaching Formula 1 in the first place.

“He’s one of the 22 best drivers in the world, and you don’t get an opportunity like that [to drive in Formula 1] just like that.”

Could Aston Martin offer Ocon an escape route?

Despite the controversy, Ocon’s Formula 1 career may not necessarily be over.

The Frenchman is already expected to leave Haas, but speculation has linked him with a potential position at Aston Martin for 2027.

Rather than immediately returning to a full-time race seat, Ocon has reportedly emerged as a candidate for a reserve driver position with the Silverstone-based outfit.

Such a move could provide an opportunity to remain involved in Formula 1, maintain relationships within the paddock and potentially position himself for another race opportunity.

However, there is an important distinction between securing a reserve role and returning to the starting grid.

Button’s comments highlight the potential consequences of Ocon’s latest controversy at a particularly sensitive stage of his career.

With Haas already moving towards a new driver arrangement and questions surrounding his next destination, Ocon now faces the challenge of rebuilding his reputation.

Whether Aston Martin provides that opportunity remains to be seen. What is clear is that his departure from Haas has created another significant obstacle in an already uncertain Formula 1 future.
