Voice of the #F1 Fans: Longing for real racing

Brought to you by TheJudge13 contributor GregP As a youngster I was naturally attracted to cars. In the mid seventies my dad took me to Kyalami, there was a GP taking place and we went to watch practice. I had never heard of or seen any F1 prior to this visit[ no TV or Internet]. … Read more

– Andretti wins maiden GP 1971

“My Home” well not really MY home, but the circuit in South Africa whose name literally translates to that in the native Zulu. Kyalami. The opening round of the 1971 Formula One Season is underway. Unlike what we might be used to nowadays though (boy are we spoilt!), Spa and Interlagos aren’t part of the roster (how did they live like that?), some teams have three cars on the grid and the season is only 11 races long (this is just sad). The anticipation is probably greater than what we face now because the last running was about 4 months prior.

The Bar Exam: 28 February 2013

A big thank you to those taking part in last week’s Formula 1 Bar Exam.

The correct answer for last week’s Bar Exam was: Kyalami, South Africa where the last race held was in 1993 and won by Alain Prost in a Williams Renault. The other circuit was the Nordschleife last raced fully in formula 1 in 1976 and won by James hunt in the McLaren. As I did not make it clear that it should be the exact circuit I also accepted Nurburgring and Lewis Hamilton last won a race there in 2011. Well done to C-bahn and Wire2004 who got it 50% right in spotting Nordschleife/Nurburgring!

Engine sounds: A couple of days ago I mentioned the engine sound changes we will hear in 2014. I found this last night. Listen to the sounds of F1 engines in 1967. (LINK) Sorry I can’t embed this video as the embed code they’ve given is wrong.

Italian rationality: For those of you who have been reading thejudge13 for some time, you will know my views on Ferrari – for those of you who don’t – Firstly, I LOVE Italy and Italian culture. I would live there if I could. However, as I often say – Ferrari would rather bask in the glory of being Ferrari than change their beliefs even if it would make them better.

There is an element of this in the Italian psyche I see in my friends of many years. Irrationality is accepted as a rational way of thinking and being and so to Autosprint – One of Italy’s finest Auto magazines. Today they publish a list of the best F1 drivers of all time.

Just days left for HRT, Post race bits, TV ratings, In depth analysis called for by Luca, Bernie’s days numbered, Vettel and the yellow light

Following a slightly different type of race review – I did feel I little etherial when writing it – here’s a few bits and pieces of post race stuff to tidy up.

Post race bits and pieces

Alonso: I allude in the ‘epitaph’ in the race review my disappointment with both title contenders for their points scoring efforts after the race. Alonso,  “With a car that is slower than the others we can win a championship, with a car that is the same as the others we can win the championship with some races to go and with a car that is a lot slower than the others we fought until the last race”. If’s, buts and maybe’s don’t cut the mustard and it is not worthy of you Fernando to give us this spiel.

I just listened to that interview again and Alonso actually says, “With a kart that is…”, not quite the Prost reference to a ‘truck’ but not far away.
