Cadillac F1 Extend Sergio Pérez’s Contract Until at Least 2029 Despite Difficult Debut Season

Cadillac have confirmed a long-term contract extension for Sergio Pérez, committing the Mexican driver to the Formula 1 project until at least the end of 2029 despite a difficult start to his debut season with the new team.

The announcement provides clarity over Pérez’s future ahead of his home race in Mexico City, although uncertainty remains over who will partner him in 2027 and beyond.

Cadillac Commit to Pérez for the Long Term

Cadillac announced on Wednesday that Pérez would remain with the team until at least the end of 2029, extending a contract that was originally due to expire at the end of 2026.

The timing is significant, with the announcement arriving shortly before the Mexican Grand Prix, where the 36-year-old will race in front of his home supporters.

Dan Towriss, CEO of the Cadillac Formula 1 team, explained that Pérez would play an important role in the organisation’s long-term ambitions.

“On the eve of a special weekend in Mexico City, we are very pleased to announce that Checo will remain a key part of the Cadillac Formula 1 team for years to come,” Towriss said in an official statement.

He added: “Building a competitive team in Formula 1 is a long-term process, and with Checo’s talent and leadership qualities, we secure the continuity and commitment we need to build on the strong foundation we laid in our first year. Together, we will focus on the next phase of our journey to further advance the team and climb up the starting grid.”

The extension underlines Cadillac’s commitment to stability as the American manufacturer works to establish itself in Formula 1.

Pérez Backs Cadillac’s Long-Term Ambitions

Pérez has endured a challenging opening campaign with Cadillac, with the Mexican and teammate Valtteri Bottas yet to make the impact they would have hoped for as the new team adjusts to the demands of Formula 1.

Nevertheless, the difficulties facing Cadillac are hardly unexpected for a newcomer competing against established manufacturers and teams with years of experience.

Pérez brings considerable experience from previous spells with Sauber, McLaren, Force India, Racing Point and Red Bull. His knowledge of different team structures, technical development and race operations could prove valuable as Cadillac develops its infrastructure and competitiveness.

The Mexican also made clear that he remains convinced by the project and sees the contract extension as a natural step in his relationship with the team.

“Being part of the Cadillac Formula 1 team from day one has been a project I truly believed in. Extending my commitment feels like a natural continuation of this chapter,” Pérez explained.

The announcement also coincides with a milestone in his career, as the Mexican Grand Prix marks his 300th Formula 1 race.

Bottas’ Cadillac Future Remains Uncertain

While Pérez’s future is now settled for the foreseeable future, the identity of his eventual teammate remains an open question.

Bottas is also in his first season with Cadillac, having previously raced for Mercedes and Sauber. However, team principal Marcin Budkowski avoided confirming the team’s driver line-up for next season when questioned last weekend in Austin.

That uncertainty leaves Cadillac with decisions to make as it assesses the progress of its inaugural campaign and considers the experience, development potential and performance required for its next phase.

Pérez’s extension suggests Cadillac value continuity and the leadership of an experienced driver as they work towards becoming more competitive. It does not, however, guarantee that the same driver pairing will remain together.

For now, the Mexican can approach his home Grand Prix with his long-term future secured. Cadillac’s immediate challenge is to translate that stability into progress on track, with the team still needing to demonstrate that its ambitious Formula 1 project can deliver results.
