Toto Wolff rejects George Russell’s F1 title doubts as Mercedes backs comeback – George Russell has conceded that his Formula 1 championship hopes are now extremely unlikely, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff insists the Briton still deserves the team’s full support and can recover his form with nine race weekends remaining.
Russell’s title challenge has suffered a dramatic setback in recent weeks. Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli has extended his advantage over the Briton from 25 points to 81 in just five races, leaving Russell facing a huge deficit as the championship enters its next phase.
The latest blow came at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, where Antonelli claimed victory at the new Madring circuit while Russell could manage only fifth place.
Russell admits title hopes are fading
Following his disappointing result in the Spanish capital, Russell acknowledged that his championship ambitions had taken a major hit.
“I won’t say it’s over, but it’s extremely unlikely I’ll be in that fight,” the 28-year-old admitted.
Russell said he would consequently place less emphasis on the championship standings and instead concentrate on trying to finish the season strongly, with the aim of securing one or two race victories.
The Mercedes driver now trails Antonelli by 81 points, despite having appeared to be firmly in contention earlier in the season.
With nine race weekends still remaining, however, the mathematical possibility of a comeback remains.
Wolff refuses to write Russell off
Wolff does not share Russell’s pessimistic assessment of his championship chances.
“It’s a technical sport; you can have an accident or retire. And as long as it’s still mathematically possible, George deserves the full support of the team,” Wolff said, according to Mercedes’ official website.
The Austrian therefore believes the title fight should not yet be considered settled, particularly given the unpredictable nature of a Formula 1 season.
Wolff also suggested that Mercedes needs to help Russell rediscover his strongest form rather than allowing his recent struggles to define his campaign.

“We want to figure out what’s needed for his potential to fully unfold,” Wolff explained.
“He’s had to deal with some mental setbacks this season, but the greats always find their way back to form. I believe George has everything it takes to fight for championships.”
The comments represent a clear vote of confidence from the Mercedes boss at a time when Russell’s position in the championship has weakened considerably.
Antonelli, meanwhile, has continued to build his advantage and appears increasingly comfortable at the front of the standings.
Nine weekends could still change everything
Although Antonelli currently holds a commanding lead, Russell does not need to be told that the situation is difficult. His own comments show that he has already adjusted his expectations.
Nevertheless, Wolff’s stance highlights the difference between accepting a significant points deficit and declaring a championship mathematically finished.
A combination of victories for Russell, difficult weekends for Antonelli and Mercedes reliability problems could dramatically alter the standings before the season reaches its conclusion.
Lewis Hamilton has already written off his own title hopes, with the Ferrari driver stating that “Antonelli and Mercedes are unstoppable this year.”
For Russell, however, Wolff clearly believes the door remains open. The challenge now is turning that belief into results.
