Ferrari raises the stakes for its home race
There are few weekends on the Formula 1 calendar that carry the same atmosphere as Monza. For Ferrari, the Italian Grand Prix is about far more than championship points.
The sea of red surrounding the circuit creates enormous pressure on the Scuderia, but it also provides an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Formula 1. A Ferrari victory at Monza is one of the ultimate prizes for both the team and its supporters.
This year, Ferrari is giving itself another opportunity to achieve it.
According to team principal Fred Vasseur, the Scuderia will introduce an improved power unit at its home race. Vasseur described the development as “a step in the right direction, especially since we know that this year is all about small improvements.”
It is already Ferrari’s second engine upgrade of the season.
Hamilton has a major opportunity
The timing could hardly be more significant for Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion has experienced the unique pressure that comes with driving for Ferrari, but Monza offers the kind of stage on which a Ferrari driver can create a lasting moment.
Hamilton has already established himself as one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, and a victory at Monza in Ferrari red would carry an entirely different significance.
The British driver currently sits third in the Drivers’ Championship, while teammate Charles Leclerc is fifth. Ferrari is second in the Constructors’ Championship, 87 points behind Mercedes.
The team therefore has a clear target: close the gap and turn its improved performance into victories.
Extra power could matter at Monza
Ferrari’s latest development has particular relevance at Monza because of the circuit’s unique demands.
The historic Italian track is dominated by long straights and heavy braking zones, making power and top speed particularly important. Ferrari hopes the new engine will provide additional horsepower and improved straight-line performance.
The upgrade has been made possible by the FIA’s so-called ADUO — Additional Development Upgrade Opportunities — system.
Following its power-unit assessment, the FIA determined that Red Bull had the most powerful engine on the grid. As a result, rival manufacturers have been permitted additional development opportunities within the regulations.
The findings have not been universally accepted.
Red Bull has questioned the FIA’s conclusions, particularly because the governing body has not publicly revealed the methodology used to reach its assessment.
Can Ferrari give the tifosi what they want?
Ferrari has established itself as Mercedes’ principal challenger during the first half of the season, but closing the championship deficit will require more than incremental progress.
Monza represents a chance to demonstrate exactly how much Ferrari’s development programme has achieved.
For Hamilton, the stakes are even greater. A victory in front of the tifosi would give his Ferrari career one of its defining moments and potentially turn the Italian Grand Prix into a celebration that would be remembered for years.
Ferrari has brought more power.
Now Hamilton and Leclerc have to turn it into the result the tifosi are demanding.
