Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s emergence as one of Formula 1’s leading young stars has already sparked speculation about his long-term future, with Italian journalist Leo Turrini expecting that the Mercedes driver will join Ferrari.
Antonelli has made a major impression during his early Formula 1 career and has established himself as one of the sport’s most prominent young talents. Despite his strong connection with Mercedes, Ferrari’s interest in the Bologna-born driver has continued to generate discussion in Italy.
For now, however, Antonelli remains firmly committed to Mercedes, the team that promoted him into Formula 1 after supporting his career from a very young age.
Turrini predicts Antonelli will eventually drive for Ferrari
Ferrari’s interest in Antonelli is particularly notable because the Italian team previously chose not to bring him through its own junior programme. Different explanations have circulated for that decision, including questions surrounding his physical stature and whether Ferrari had the appropriate structure to manage his development at the time.
Antonelli subsequently joined the Mercedes junior programme and eventually became the team’s Formula 1 driver.
Turrini believes Ferrari could ultimately regret allowing the opportunity to pass.
“I have said it before: one day Kimi Antonelli will drive for Ferrari. That is his dream, even though he obviously cannot say it out loud,” Turrini wrote.
“I just cannot say when that will happen. He is not yet twenty years old, and a driver cannot win anything without a good car. But it is going to happen, and it will be a great day.”
The prediction reflects the growing status Antonelli has achieved in his home country. A Ferrari move would carry additional significance because of his Italian nationality and his birthplace in Bologna, relatively close to the team’s Maranello headquarters.
Antonelli remains committed to Mercedes
While speculation about Ferrari continues, Antonelli has repeatedly made clear that his immediate priority is succeeding with Mercedes.
The Italian has described Mercedes as his family and has spoken about the responsibility he feels towards the team that gave him an opportunity at just 12 years old.
That relationship makes a short-term Ferrari switch unlikely, particularly while Antonelli is establishing himself as a central part of Mercedes’ future.
At the same time, Antonelli has previously described Ferrari as an “immense” team, meaning the possibility of driving for the Scuderia has not been completely dismissed.
For Ferrari, the attraction would be obvious. Antonelli is not only an emerging Formula 1 star but also one of the most significant Italian talents to reach the championship in years.
Verstappen also enters the Ferrari conversation
Antonelli is not the only major name being linked with a potential Ferrari future.
Turrini also discussed Max Verstappen as a possible option if circumstances align later in the decade. His scenario involves Lewis Hamilton potentially leaving Ferrari and Verstappen eventually deciding to end his relationship with Red Bull Racing.
“Verstappen will never admit it, but he also knows that a world title with Ferrari makes you unique as a driver. From there, it is just a very long road to a contract with Ferrari,” Turrini said.
A potential Verstappen-Ferrari partnership remains considerably more speculative than the Antonelli prediction. Verstappen’s future will depend heavily on Red Bull’s competitiveness and the contractual situation surrounding him.
Nevertheless, the possibility underlines Ferrari’s position as one of the few teams capable of attracting virtually any driver at the top of the sport.
“One day he will drive in red”
The Ferrari speculation is likely to remain a long-term storyline rather than an immediate transfer issue when it comes to Kimi Antonelli.
Mercedes has invested heavily in his development, while Antonelli has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the team’s defining drivers of the next generation.
But Turrini remains convinced that the Italian will eventually wear Ferrari red.
“One day he will drive in red,” he concluded. “When that happens, it will be a special day for Ferrari and for all of Italy.”
If that prediction eventually becomes reality, Ferrari would not simply be signing another established Formula 1 driver. It would be bringing one of Italy’s biggest modern motorsport talents back to the country’s most famous racing marque.
