Mercedes make George Russell decision as Max Verstappen holds crucial Red Bull talks

For months, speculation has linked Max Verstappen with a move away from Red Bull, while George Russell’s long-term Mercedes future has remained under scrutiny.

Fresh reports from Italy now claim Mercedes have decided to retain Russell for the 2027 Formula 1 season, while separate reports in the UK suggest Verstappen has already begun exploratory discussions with McLaren ahead of another crucial meeting with Red Bull’s senior leadership this weekend.

Mercedes reportedly activate Russell contract clause

According to Corriere della Sera, Mercedes have exercised a contractual option that will keep George Russell with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season.

The Italian newspaper reports that both Russell and Mercedes have activated a clause within the contract signed when the Briton renewed his deal in October 2025.

Although Mercedes announced at the time only that Russell would remain with the team through 2026, the latest report suggests internal mechanisms within the agreement have now secured his services for at least one further campaign.

If confirmed, the move would effectively end months of speculation that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff could attempt to lure Verstappen away from Red Bull should the Dutchman become available.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli is widely expected to remain at Mercedes, meaning the Brackley squad would head into Formula 1’s new 2027 regulations with an unchanged driver line-up.

Verstappen linked with surprise McLaren talks

While Mercedes may have settled one major question, uncertainty surrounding Verstappen’s future continues to dominate the Formula 1 paddock.

According to the Daily Mail, the four-time world champion has held preliminary discussions with McLaren over a potential future move.

The report cites an unnamed source who claimed: “It’s an idea that appeals to McLaren.”

The source added that a switch for the 2028 season would be possible, while suggesting “it could also happen earlier.”

Neither Verstappen nor McLaren have commented publicly on the report, and there is currently no independent confirmation that formal negotiations are underway.

Gianpiero Lambiase could prove a key figure

One element adding intrigue to the speculation is the expected future of Verstappen’s long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.

Reports have repeatedly linked Lambiase with a future senior leadership role at McLaren, although the Woking-based team has consistently denied those claims.

Should Lambiase ultimately move to McLaren, some observers believe the long-standing working relationship between engineer and driver could make the team an even more attractive destination for Verstappen.

However, Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028.

Multiple reports have stated that performance-related clauses within that agreement could allow him to leave before then, although the exact terms have never been publicly disclosed.

Another decisive Verstappen meeting scheduled

Red Bull are expected to hold another high-level meeting with Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend at Spielberg.

The gathering follows an earlier summit in Salzburg before the Spanish Grand Prix that reportedly failed to produce a definitive outcome regarding the Dutchman’s long-term future.

With Mercedes reportedly committing to Russell, attention now shifts firmly to whether Verstappen remains with Red Bull into Formula 1’s new regulatory era or whether one of the sport’s biggest transfer sagas is only just beginning.

Mercedes appearing to remove themselves from the Verstappen market would significantly reshape the driver landscape for 2027. If Russell’s future is indeed secure, McLaren and Red Bull could become the primary focus of any potential Verstappen negotiations, making the coming weeks particularly significant as Formula 1 approaches a major regulation reset.
