Update: Toto Wolff Addresses Max Verstappen to Mercedes Rumours

Toto Wolff responds to renewed Max Verstappen speculation – Rumours surrounding Max Verstappen and a possible departure from Red Bull Racing have intensified after the team had another difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Although Verstappen secured his first podium of the year at the Canadian Grand Prix, questions over his long-term future remain in the spotlight.

One team constantly linked with the Dutchman is Mercedes. However, team principal Toto Wolff has attempted to temper expectations of an imminent blockbuster transfer.

In an interview with Sport Bild, Wolff praised his current driver pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, who are currently in first and second place respectively in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings.

“Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are both at different stages of their careers, but they each deliver consistently,” Wolff explained.

Mercedes has emerged as the benchmark team during Formula 1’s new regulatory era, and the consistency shown by Russell and Antonelli has helped the team establish a commanding position in both championships after the opening phase of the season.

Wolff leaves the door open

Despite repeatedly expressing satisfaction with his current line-up, Wolff stopped short of fully dismissing the possibility of a future Verstappen move.

“There is currently no reason to change anything about our line-up,” the Austrian explained, before adding: “You should never rule anything out, and everyone knows how highly I rate Max.”

This final remark is likely to fuel further speculation about Verstappen’s future, particularly given the current uncertainty surrounding Red Bull’s competitiveness.

The four-time world champion is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but there are ongoing reports that the deal includes performance-related exit clauses. According to several insiders in the paddock, Verstappen could potentially activate an option to leave if he is outside the top three in the championship standings by the summer break.

At present, that scenario remains possible.

Red Bull’s struggles continue in 2026

After dominating large portions of Formula 1 in recent seasons, Red Bull has struggled in the 2026 campaign. The team has struggled to match the consistent pace of Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari, and the McLaren Formula 1 Team.

While Verstappen secured a podium finish in Canada, Red Bull’s performance has fluctuated significantly from circuit to circuit.

The Dutchman is currently seventh in the Drivers’ Championship standings — a far cry from the dominant campaigns that saw him win world titles in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Last season, he still managed to finish second in the standings despite Red Bull losing momentum during the second half of the year. However, the current situation appears considerably more serious, with the team lacking outright pace across a variety of track characteristics.

Red Bull’s position in the Constructors’ Championship is equally concerning, with the Milton Keynes-based team already trailing Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren by a substantial margin.

Verstappen rumours unlikely to disappear

Even though Wolff publicly insists that Mercedes is content with Russell and Antonelli, Verstappen’s availability would inevitably attract interest across the Formula 1 paddock.

Verstappen is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most talented drivers, and Wolff has openly admired him for several years, dating back to the controversial 2021 championship battle between Mercedes and Red Bull.

For now, Mercedes appears focused on maintaining stability during a highly successful season. Antonelli’s rapid rise has strengthened the team’s long-term outlook, while Russell has firmly established himself as a championship contender.

However, as long as Red Bull continues to struggle competitively, speculation over Verstappen’s future is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
