Will the Dutchman leave in 2026? Although Max Verstappen is tied to Red Bull Racing until the end of the 2028 season on paper, new details suggest that he retains significant freedom over his Formula 1 future. According to Sport Bild, the four-time world champion has multiple performance-related exit clauses written into his contract, including one that could come into effect as early as 2026.

Despite Red Bull’s public confidence, these revelations highlight just how much leverage Verstappen holds.

Aged 28, Verstappen is in his prime and is not willing to compromise on competitiveness. While Red Bull remains one of the sport’s powerhouses, Verstappen has reportedly made it clear that he will only commit to the team if they can guarantee sustained success. Should this not be delivered, he would be prepared to walk away without costing a potential new team a transfer fee.

The 2026 clause: A summer deadline

The most eye-catching detail concerns a clause linked to the 2026 season. According to Sport Bild, Verstappen would be entitled to terminate his Red Bull contract if he does not finish at least second in the Drivers’ World Championship by the end of July 2026. Crucially, the clause would allow him to leave unilaterally, meaning Red Bull would receive no compensation.

This places enormous pressure on the team, particularly given the significant regulatory changes scheduled for 2026. With new power unit rules set to reshape the competitive order, uncertainty is inevitable. It seems that Verstappen has ensured that he will not be locked into a long-term project that fails to deliver immediate results.

The report adds that a similar mechanism would also apply in 2027, further strengthening Verstappen’s position in future negotiations.

Even more freedom in 2027

The situation reportedly becomes even more favourable for Verstappen in 2027. If he is not leading the Drivers’ Championship by the summer break, he could terminate his contract at the end of the year. In effect, the bar would be raised even higher, requiring not just title contention, but outright leadership.

Sport Bild describes Verstappen as being in a ‘comfortable situation’, and it is easy to see why. Few drivers in Formula 1 history have enjoyed such contractual power, particularly those already signed to a long-term deal. Despite its success with Verstappen, Red Bull appears to have accepted these conditions to secure his signature.

A frustrating 2025 fuels speculation

Verstappen had imagined a very different scenario for the 2025 season. Instead of cruising at the front, he often found himself chasing the McLaren duo and struggling to assert the kind of dominance that had defined previous years. This lack of control over the championship fight immediately reignited rumours about his future.

As the season progressed, talk of Verstappen activating an exit clause intensified, with rival teams closely monitoring the situation. Although no move materialised, the underlying message was clear: Verstappen’s loyalty is not unconditional. According to reports, the same option will be available to him again in the upcoming season.

Marko’s influence and Red Bull’s response

The exit clauses are said to have been negotiated with Helmut Marko, former Red Bull motorsport advisor and long-standing key ally of Verstappen within the organisation. While Red Bull does not believe that the 71-time Grand Prix winner will trigger any of these clauses, their existence has reportedly caused concern internally.

Nevertheless, the Red Bull leadership continues to play down concerns. Sporting director Oliver Mintzlaff has previously stressed the strength of the relationship between driver and team.

“Max knows what he has in us,” Mintzlaff said in October. “We gave him the chance in Formula 1, and together we won four world championship titles. That creates a bond.”

Rivals waiting in the wings

Despite these assurances, Mercedes and Aston Martin continue to be linked with Verstappen whenever there is any uncertainty. With both teams eager to strengthen their position ahead of the 2026 regulation reset, the possibility of Verstappen becoming available, even temporarily, cannot be ignored.

For now, Verstappen remains a Red Bull driver. However, with clearly defined exit routes in place, his future beyond the midpoint of the decade is far from guaranteed.

Cadillac’s F1 Gamble: Can artificial intelligence deliver results? – Cadillac’s preparations for their highly anticipated entry into Formula 1 are progressing behind the scenes, with artificial intelligence set to play a pivotal role. The American manufacturer has announced a partnership with IFS, an industrial AI software specialist, in a move designed to help the new team operate efficiently and stay within Formula 1’s strict cost cap regulations.

For a team entering the sport for the first time in over a decade, the challenge lies in being competitive without the inefficiencies that often affect new operations. Cadillac’s decision to embed AI-driven systems from the outset signals a strategy focused on structure, automation, and long-term sustainability rather than short-term improvisation.

The IFS partnership covers the entire operation

Under the agreement, IFS will become Cadillac Formula 1’s official technology partner and will work with the team from March 2024. The software provider will support a wide range of activities, including supply chain management, production planning, and quality control.

These areas are becoming increasingly important in modern Formula 1, where the speed of development must be balanced against financial constraints. By using AI to monitor workflows, predict bottlenecks and optimise resource allocation, Cadillac aims to reduce waste and eliminate unnecessary manual processes. The IFS brand will also be prominently featured across team assets, including the cars, driver suits, and team apparel…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
