Aston Martin Sets Date for First Adrian Newey-Designed AMR26 – Updated 20:00 UK

Aston Martin has confirmed that its 2026 Formula 1 challenger, the AMR26, will be unveiled on 9 February, marking the debut of the first car designed under Adrian Newey’s leadership — and the beginning of a new era for the team. The announcement, delivered via a simple “AMR26 arrives” post, belies the significance of the moment as F1 heads into sweeping regulation changes for 2026.

The team becomes the first to fix its 2026 launch date, with the AMR26 set to run at Barcelona’s collective tests at the end of January before Bahrain testing in February. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will continue as drivers for the crucial development year.

After slipping to seventh in the 2025 standings despite major investment, Aston Martin enters a pivotal restructuring phase. Andy Cowell currently leads the team but will shift to chief strategy officer as Newey formally takes over the team principal role at the end of the year.

The AMR26 is widely seen as the team’s biggest opportunity yet to reset its trajectory — and the countdown to Aston Martin’s most important F1 car in decades is now underway.

McLaren to Conduct Thorough Review ‘Crisis Meeting’ After Costly Strategy Error in Qatar GP – Updated 14:50 UK

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has confirmed that the team will conduct a “very thorough” review of the costly strategic error made during the Qatar Grand Prix.

The decision to keep Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on the track during the safety car period allowed Max Verstappen to secure a decisive victory. This error had a significant impact on the McLarens, with Piastri finishing second and Norris fourth. This reduced Norris’s championship lead to just 12 points ahead of the Abu Dhabi race. Stella acknowledged that the team’s judgment may have been influenced by a “certain bias” and assumptions about how other teams would act.

He highlighted that this error follows McLaren’s disqualification in Las Vegas for excessive skid-block wear, but stressed that the team maintains a strong ‘no-blame culture’ focused on continuous improvement.

He drew parallels with Michael Schumacher’s experiences, emphasising that setbacks are an integral part of the journey to championship success. Stella concluded that the high stakes and tight competition this season have exposed the team’s vulnerabilities, reinforcing the need for flawless execution in future races.

Red Bull confirms Isack Hadjar; Tsunoda’s F1 future uncertain – Updated 14:15 UK

Red Bull is set to announce its 2026 Formula 1 driver line-up, with Isack Hadjar joining Max Verstappen and Arvid Lindblad being promoted to the Racing Bulls team. This leaves Yuki Tsunoda without a confirmed full-time seat, although ongoing talks between Red Bull and Honda regarding engine testing (TPC) could lead to him being offered a reserve or development role. The Honda deal is crucial for Red Bull to continue essential testing next season and provide opportunities for junior drivers to gain F1 experience. Tsunoda hinted at his uncertain position during the Qatar GP.

The Honda deal is particularly significant because Red Bull will begin using its own power units in collaboration with Ford next season, marking the first year under new regulations. TPC testing will enable the team to use previous cars with V6 turbo-hybrid engines, offering valuable track time for Lindblad, Hadjar and potentially Tsunoda. As testing costs are not included in the F1 budget cap, Red Bull has the flexibility to invest heavily in driver development. This makes the Honda arrangement a key factor in preparing the team and its junior talents for competitive performance in 2026.

Verstappen embraces ‘Chucky’ villain role as three-way title showdown looms – Updated 11:50 UK

As Formula 1 heads into its first three-driver title decider in 15 years, Max Verstappen has laughed off Zak Brown’s comparison of him to a horror-movie villain, saying McLaren can “call me Chucky”.

The Red Bull driver, who was once 104 points behind, is now only 12 points off Lando Norris after an unlikely victory in Qatar, aided by a strategy error from McLaren. When asked if Brown’s remark means he’s getting under McLaren’s skin, Verstappen replied: “I saw those comments too and thought they were funny. I can only control what I do in the car.”

Oscar Piastri, who was left “speechless” after McLaren failed to pit him under the early safety car, is also still in with a chance — he is 16 points behind with 25 available in Abu Dhabi.

Reflecting on his calmer mindset compared with his infamous 2021 decider, Verstappen said he is approaching the weekend with “positive energy” and little pressure: “If I don’t win, I’ll still know I’ve had an amazing season… I’m just out there having a good time.”

Despite their superior pace, McLaren now face the risk of losing the championship. Brown admitted the Qatar call was costly: “We made the wrong decision and I feel terrible for Oscar and Lando… We’ll go back and study it.”

The Abu Dhabi finale is setting up a rare three-way fight between Norris, Verstappen and Piastri, with momentum firmly shifting towards the self-proclaimed ‘Chucky’.

Piastri ‘speechless’ after McLaren strategy error costs him Qatar GP win – Updated 11:30 UK

Oscar Piastri was devastated to finish second in the Qatar Grand Prix, despite dominating the entire weekend. Having started from pole position and won the sprint race, the Australian saw his hopes of victory disappear when McLaren chose not to pit under an early safety car, while every other driver did. This wiped out his lead, dropping both McLarens behind Max Verstappen, who went on to win.

Piastri fought back to reclaim second place, but was unable to challenge Verstappen. Speaking on the team radio, he said he was “speechless”. I don’t have any words.” He later added that he had driven “the best race that I could… there was nothing left out there”.

This result drops Piastri to third in the championship standings. To become world champion, he now needs to win in Abu Dhabi and for his teammate, Lando Norris, to finish sixth or lower.
