Wolff reacts to Antonelli transfer reports

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s debut season in Formula 1 has been marked by high expectations and growing challenges. The young Italian entered the sport with enormous praise as a generational talent, but his time at Mercedes has not been easy. With George Russell consistently outperforming him, there has been much speculation that Mercedes may reconsider their plans for Antonelli’s future. Team boss Toto Wolff has now addressed the rumours directly.

Before the Singapore Grand Prix, he was asked about the growing rumours that Antonelli could be moved away from the Silver Arrows at the end of the season. The Mercedes team principal firmly denied the reports.

“The speculation about Williams and Alpine is complete nonsense,” he told Sky Italia. He added that Antonelli will “100 percent” remain with Mercedes in 2026.

In recent weeks, stories have circulated suggesting that Mercedes might demote Antonelli to a customer team for further development. This would enable the team to recruit a more experienced driver while retaining Antonelli within the Mercedes system.

Williams and Alpine were both named as possible destinations, given their engine relationships with Mercedes.

The Williams and Alpine connections

The rumours made some sense on paper. Williams has long used Mercedes engines and has previously served as a development team for young drivers. Meanwhile, Alpine will run with Mercedes engines for the first time in 2026, when the new engine regulations come into effect. This has fuelled speculation about a potential loan move.

One theory is that Mercedes could strike a deal to place Antonelli at Williams in exchange for Carlos Sainz.

Displaced from Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton’s arrival in 2025, the Spaniard joined Williams, but reportedly has an exit clause in his contract should an offer come from a leading team. This has led to speculation about a potential swap arrangement.

The Sky pundit was among those who commented on the potential scenario saying “I think Carlos Sainz would be available at any time. I mean, there seem to be some clauses, I don’t know exactly what they are, but that’s what I hear. He would certainly be the first person I would think of,” he told Formel1.de, the popular German F1 website.

His comments added weight to the rumours of a Mercedes–Williams driver shuffle.

However, Wolff’s clear rejection of the idea has quashed such speculation. He has consistently defended Antonelli, emphasising the long-term project that Mercedes has in mind with its young talent.

Antonelli’s rookie season struggles

Antonelli’s challenges are undeniable. At just 18 years old, he is facing the steepest learning curve in motorsport. After a respectable start, he fell behind his teammate Russell and made several errors on the track. Former driver and RTL pundit Christian Danner was particularly critical after Antonelli’s mistake at Zandvoort, stating that “Formula 1 is not a school bench for improvement; only the best come to Formula 1”.

These performances have increased the pressure on the young Italian. While the team recognises his potential, the immediate gap to Russell has raised questions about whether Mercedes introduced him to Formula 1 too soon.

Signs of progress

Despite the criticism, Antonelli has also demonstrated the talent that earned him his place on the grid. His fourth-place finish in Baku was clear evidence of progress, as well as a reminder of why Mercedes sees him as a future star. Wolff has highlighted these performances as proof that Antonelli is learning and improving with each race.

The Mercedes boss has repeatedly emphasised that Antonelli is part of their long-term vision and that they remain committed to his development. The Italian’s current contract runs until the end of the season. Although he has not yet officially signed a contract extension, Wolff’s comments suggest that this is only a matter of time.

What lies ahead?

Looking ahead, Antonelli will continue to face intense scrutiny. The combination of his age, reputation and the responsibility of driving for a team like Mercedes makes his rookie campaign particularly challenging. Every mistake is magnified, and every rumour of his replacement spreads quickly.

Nevertheless, Wolff’s public support offers stability. Mercedes has made it clear that Antonelli remains central to their plans through to 2026 and beyond. With strong support, continued progress on the track and the opportunity to learn from George Russell, the Italian driver has the chance to fulfil Mercedes’ vision for him.

For now, rumours of a move to Williams or Alpine have been firmly dismissed. Antonelli will remain in silver, tasked with proving that he is indeed the exceptional talent that many believed he would become. His journey has only just begun, and Mercedes appears determined to see it through.

Singapore GP

In another effort from the FIA to make driving a Formula One car even easier, a rule was introduced for 2025 to make the drivers more comfortable in hot conditions. If the temperatures during the race weekend are expected to reach 31 degrees celsius, then a heat hazard will be declared forcing the teams to fit cooling systems for their drivers.

Of course this will add weight to the car and so the minimum limit has been raised by 2kg for practice and Sprint qualifying and by a total of 5kg for Sprint races and Grand Prix.

A driver cooling system is “defined as a system, the sole purpose of which, is to provide additional cooling for the driver”, and was specified as a fireproof shirt which allows cooled fluid to be pumped around the vest through a series of tubes…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
