It turns out Lewis Hamilton’s fearless antics didn’t start with Formula 1. According to his childhood friend and former teammate Nico Rosberg, the seven-time world champion was already driving like a man possessed long before he ever got behind the wheel of an F1 car.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Rosberg revealed a throwback story that paints a very vivid picture of Hamilton as a high-octane thrill-seeker from a young age. “We were best friends back then, so we always went on vacation together,” Rosberg recalled with a smile. “He was always at my parents’ house.”
The pair weren’t just karting prodigies competing on the track. Off the track, their obsession with anything fast and loud remained ever-present. “Lewis was really crazy, completely crazy,” Rosberg said, chuckling at the memory. “I remember one time we went jet skiing together.”
That, dear jury, is where the story takes a very Hamilton-esque turn.
The Jet Ski Stunt That Nearly Turned Into a Casualty
While most kids might paddle around on calm waters, young Lewis was launching himself into the air like Evel Knievel in swim shorts. “I was sitting on the back of him, on the same jet ski,” Rosberg explained. “I took off so hard, I went down with full force.” A brief team-building exercise became a solo operation after that — no more tandem riding.
“So then we each took our own stand-up jet ski,” Rosberg said. “And I saw Lewis go for this gigantic wave made by a passing ferry. He didn’t even think about slowing down.”
Now, keep in mind — this wasn’t Monaco, and there were no marshals or virtual safety cars on standby.
“He hit that wave and launched into the air — I’ve never seen anyone fly so high on a jet ski,” Rosberg recalled. But the moment of airborne glory quickly turned into a case for the on-site medic.
“He landed with full force, smashed his chin into the jet ski and ended up with his chin split open,” he added. “He was semi-conscious. I had to go over to check if he was okay. Completely crazy…”
In the modern era, such behaviour might have earned Lewis a ten-place grid penalty, a stern chat from the FIA, and a social media apology. Back then, it was just another summer holiday.

From Childhood Chaos to Championship Clashes
Of course, Rosberg and Hamilton’s shared history doesn’t stop with bruised chins and wild water sports. Their boyhood friendship eventually grew into one of Formula 1’s most infamous rivalries, particularly during their explosive time together at Mercedes between 2013 and 2016.
What started as two boys sharing jet skis became two men sharing championship aspirations — and not always in harmony.
Who could forget Spain 2016, where the pair took each other out on the opening lap in a moment that defined their final season together? Tensions had been building for years by that point. Their camaraderie had slowly frayed under the intense heat of title battles, media scrutiny, and intra-team politics.
Rosberg, of course, had the last laugh — retiring immediately after winning the 2016 World Championship, with the unmistakable vibe of a man who knew one more season with Hamilton might result in jet skis being swapped for boxing gloves.

The Rosberg-Hamilton Relationship Today
Despite the past hostilities, time — as it often does — appears to have healed most wounds.
In a surprising revelation, Rosberg shared that he and Hamilton now live in the same apartment complex. “We see each other every now and then,” he said, rather casually, like it’s perfectly normal to bump into your former title rival in the lift on the way to yoga. “We now have a very pleasant, mutual relationship.”
For a rivalry that at one point made Prost and Senna look like flatmates from a mindfulness retreat, this is perhaps the most unexpected twist of all.
Rosberg’s anecdotes give us a glimpse into the real Lewis Hamilton — not just the vegan, fashion-forward activist with seven world titles, but the same daredevil kid who didn’t lift off the throttle even when the laws of gravity told him otherwise. Was Hamilton always destined for F1 stardom, or was he simply lucky to survive his own youthful exuberance?

MORE F1 NEWS – Horner loyalists revolt
Red Bull ‘mass exodus’ detailed after Horner sacking – The shock sacking of Christian Horner may well have been the final act in the night of the long knives, as the new Austrian overlords who own the team flexed their muscle to remove what to them was an irritant. Horner had been given carte blanche to run the racing outfit as he saw fit under the auspices of the energy drinks entrepreneurial founder, but the death of Didi Mateschitz during the 2023 US Grand Prix weekend was to change all that.
The men in grey suits who inherited Mateschitz’s authority following his passing made an attempt early in 2024 to have Horner removed. He was accused of “inappropriate behaviour’ by a female employee of the racing team and despite being vindicated twice, leaked documents from the investigation were sent to over 150 senior paddock members in an attempt to discredit him….
