Whilst murmurs of interest from Christian Horner’s team have circulated for some time, the Australian driver never let them distract him from his trajectory at McLaren. By extending his contract with the Woking-based outfit, Piastri has underlined his commitment to the team that took a chance on him when others hesitated.
Fresh from his third F1 race victory, Piastri has no interest in entertaining speculation. His sole focus remains on moving forward with McLaren, a team that has rapidly re-established itself among the elite of Formula One. With a solid multi-year deal in place and a competitive car under his belt, the Australian has his sights set on world championship glory – and he’s determined to get there in papaya orange.

Red Bull’s interest wasn’t enough to sway him
Christian Horner has long been open about his admiration for Oscar Piastri. The Red Bull Team Principal has reportedly been monitoring the young Australian as a potential future addition to the team’s line-up. The interest has only intensified in recent months amid ongoing speculation over Max Verstappen’s future.
Despite being under contract, Verstappen has been the subject of rumours suggesting he could leave Red Bull under certain circumstances, especially given the recent internal politics and power shifts within the organisation.
But if Red Bull did come knocking on Piastri’s door, McLaren made sure it was quickly slammed shut. The British outfit secured Piastri’s services with a new multi-year contract, effectively ending any realistic pursuit by their rivals. Piastri himself has no regrets.
“For me, other teams have never really been a serious option,” said Piastri in a recent interview with The Times. “If I didn’t believe in the McLaren project, I wouldn’t have signed such a long contract. It’s as simple as that.”
A championship-focused environment at McLaren
Piastri’s arrival at McLaren in 2023 was the product of a bold – and somewhat controversial – decision. Having been nurtured by Alpine’s driver development program, many expected the French team to give him his Formula 1 debut. But when Alpine hesitated, Piastri’s management, led by fellow Aussie and former F1 driver Mark Webber, orchestrated a high-profile move to McLaren. It proved to be a career-defining decision.
Since joining the team, Piastri has quickly adapted to the top level of motorsport. Not only has he won races, but he has also consistently performed under pressure. According to the 22-year-old, McLaren offers everything he needs to thrive: performance, support and a clear path to the top.
“From a performance point of view and in terms of the team atmosphere, McLaren is exactly where I want to be,” he explained.
“A lot of drivers would love to be here right now. I think I can win with this team. If I couldn’t, I wouldn’t be here in the long term.”
His words reflect not only loyalty, but confidence in the direction the team is taking under team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown. McLaren’s remarkable turnaround in form last season, from midfield mediocrity to frequent podium finishes, has injected new energy into the team – and drivers like Piastri are reaping the rewards.

The battle within: Norris vs. Piastri
Of course, no discussion of McLaren’s resurgence is complete without mentioning Lando Norris. The Briton has long been the team’s poster boy, having signed a long-term contract of his own and weathered the team’s less competitive years. Now, with McLaren emerging as a top contender, Norris finds himself in a head-to-head battle with a team-mate who is every bit as fast and hungry.
Piastri, for his part, isn’t intimidated by the rivalry within the team. On the contrary, it excites him.
“I didn’t come here to play second fiddle,” he said.
“We both want the same thing – to win. That kind of internal competition is healthy and it’s part of what drives us forward.”
With McLaren consistently challenging Red Bull and Ferrari for podiums – and occasionally winning – it is not inconceivable that the championship fight could become an all-McLaren affair. Both drivers have shown the pace, composure and ambition to mount a title challenge. The key will be consistency and taking advantage of opportunities when they arise.
Piastri believes he’s close to taking that next step. “I’ve proved to myself more than anyone else that I’ve got what it takes to be a champion,” he said.
“I don’t think I’ve reached my peak yet, but I’m working hard to get there. When I’m at my best I know I can beat anyone.”
Why Piastri turned down Red Bull
Red Bull’s interest in Piastri wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Their driver development programme is renowned for nurturing talent, but it’s also notorious for chewing up and spitting out drivers who don’t deliver immediately. For someone like Piastri – methodical, focused and strategic – it’s no surprise that he wasn’t tempted by the glamour or performance advantages that Red Bull might offer.
Beyond that, Red Bull’s future looks a little murky at the moment. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Verstappen, the internal power struggle following the investigation into team principal Christian Horner and the ambiguity surrounding Red Bull Powertrains’ readiness for 2026 all create an environment that may seem less stable than it once was.
McLaren, on the other hand, seems to be rising at the right time. The investment in infrastructure at Woking, a more harmonious team culture and improving on-track performance paint a picture of a team on the rise. And that’s exactly where Piastri wants to be.
“I made my choice not just for today, but for the years to come,” he added. “I want to win World titles. And I think I can do that here.”

Eyes on the prize
With his long-term future secured and McLaren gaining momentum every weekend, Piastri has his sights firmly set on the biggest prize in motorsport. He’s already put in some outstanding performances and proved that he can compete with established names. What comes next is turning promise into legacy.
The 2025 season promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory, with McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes all battling for supremacy. For Oscar Piastri, it’s more than just another season – it’s the next step in a journey that began with quiet confidence and now roars with ambition.
He’s not looking back at what might have been with Red Bull. He’s looking forward to what will be with McLaren. And if current form continues, he may not just be in the title conversation – he could be leading it.
Bombshell interview: Open war between Marko & Horner
MORE F1 NEWS – Russell forced to wait on new contract. Why?
Toto Wolff may be one of the newer kids on the block in terms of his membership of the Piranha club, yet his ability to weave a web of untruths is masterful. As the Formula One ground effect cars were introduced in 2022 and Mercedes flunked the technical examination, Wolff decided it best fitted his team to complain about safety to the FIA.
As far as Toto was concerned his car was the worst amongst the front runners and so any kind of regulation change could upset the pecking order in Mercedes’ favour. This earned him the infamous response from Christian Horner to “change your fucking car,” as Netflix revealed in their broadcast of the team principals’ meeting in Canada.
With Lewis Hamilton having told the world Mercedes’ was no longer the future as he dropped his bombshell move to Ferrari in 2024, Wolff had a strategy to divert some of the scrutiny away from his engineers and underperforming car. As the internal rows at Red Bull ramped up, Toto made a very public appear to Max Verstappen to join Mercedes, a theme he strangely pursued even when it was announced that Kimi Antonelli would be replacing the seven times champion….
