Aston Martin arrives in Hungary with an almost completely new F1 car

Aston Martin is set to introduce a radically revised Formula 1 car at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, with the Silverstone-based team hoping a major technical overhaul can revive a disappointing 2026 campaign. The upgrade package is so extensive that team insiders are describing it as a true “B car”, featuring significant changes to the chassis, aerodynamics and power unit integration rather than a conventional mid-season development package.

The scale of the transformation became apparent on Thursday at the Hungaroring, where Aston Martin’s garage appeared unusually empty ahead of the race weekend. Unlike a typical upgrade introduction, many of the new components had yet to arrive at the circuit as final assembly and technical checks continued behind the scenes.

The ambitious project reflects growing frustration within the team after a first half of the season that has fallen well short of expectations. Rather than pursuing incremental gains through a series of smaller updates, Aston Martin has chosen to effectively restart its 2026 programme with a substantially redesigned car.

 

Aston Martin introduces extensive technical overhaul

The Budapest package represents one of the most significant mid-season transformations seen in Formula 1 this year.

Sources close to the project based at the Silverstone factory indicated to TJ13 that the changes extend well beyond revised aerodynamic surfaces. Aston Martin has reportedly altered multiple aspects of the car’s architecture, with modifications affecting both the chassis and several key design elements throughout the package.

The team has also incorporated a series of anticipated power unit-related developments, creating what is effectively a fresh technical platform for the remainder of the season.

Such a comprehensive redesign is unusual under Formula 1’s cost cap era, where teams typically prefer gradual development programmes. Aston Martin’s decision highlights the extent of its concerns regarding the competitiveness of the original AMR26 concept.

With so many components arriving late in the preparation process, Friday’s opening practice session is expected to serve as a functional test as much as a performance evaluation.

 

Hungarian GP practice to act as shakedown

Ordinarily, teams use the first practice session to begin performance optimisation and setup work for the weekend.

For Aston Martin, however, the priority is expected to be reliability and system validation.

Engineers will first need to ensure that all newly introduced components operate as intended before moving on to detailed setup adjustments. This means the opening hours of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend could resemble a shakedown test more than a standard race preparation programme.

The compressed timeline adds additional pressure, as the team has little opportunity to resolve any unforeseen issues before qualifying and the race.

Nevertheless, Aston Martin appears willing to accept that risk in pursuit of a much larger performance gain than would be achievable through a traditional upgrade package.

 

Adrian Newey gains valuable development opportunity

The team’s current position in the Constructors’ Championship could unexpectedly work in its favour.

Under Formula 1’s Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions (ATR) system, lower-ranked teams receive additional wind tunnel and CFD development allowances compared to their higher-placed rivals.

As a result of Aston Martin’s struggles during the opening half of the season, the team currently benefits from 115% of the baseline aerodynamic testing allocation, one of the highest levels available under the regulations.

That advantage gives Adrian Newey and Aston Martin’s technical department additional opportunities to refine and develop the new package in the coming months.

Rather than treating Budapest as the final version of the concept, the team is expected to use the upgraded car as a foundation for further development throughout the remainder of 2026.

 

Hungary could define Aston Martin’s season

The Hungarian Grand Prix may prove to be one of Aston Martin’s most important weekends of the year.

If the revised car delivers the anticipated gains, the team could effectively begin a second phase of its season and move closer to the midfield battle after months of underperformance.

A successful debut would also validate the decision to redirect resources towards a comprehensive redesign rather than continuing with incremental updates to the original concept.

However, if the package fails to produce a meaningful step forward, questions will inevitably be raised about the direction of the project and whether even Aston Martin’s additional development allowance can compensate for the ground already lost during the first half of the campaign.
