Sky Sports analyst Danica Patrick under fire after fan backlash over political comments – Sky Sports, one of the world’s most respected sports broadcasters, particularly revered for its extensive Formula 1 coverage, has unexpectedly found itself at the centre of controversy.
The channel, known for its dynamic team of analysts, has recently become embroiled in a heated dispute surrounding one of its analysts, former IndyCar driver Danica Patrick. As the new Formula One season gets underway, the British broadcaster is facing mounting pressure from thousands of fans calling for Patrick to be sacked over her political comments, which many feel are incompatible with the inclusive ethos of the sport.
Who is Danica Patrick?
Danica Patrick’s fame extends far beyond motorsport and into the mainstream as a trailblazer for women in racing. Although Patrick has never competed in Formula One, she has a track record in IndyCar and NASCAR that has earned her recognition.
In 2008, she became the first woman to win an IndyCar race, triumphing in the Indy Japan 300. After retiring from professional racing, Patrick made a smooth transition into broadcasting, eventually becoming an analyst for Sky Sports in 2021, appearing alongside former F1 drivers such as Jenson Button, Martin Brundle and Karun Chandhok.
Patrick has frequently offered her insights during race weekends, pre-race discussions and analyses of driver performances. Her contributions were initially well received, despite her limited direct F1 experience. Patrick was even featured in Netflix’s critically acclaimed F1 series Drive to Survive, increasing her visibility and popularity among newer fans of the sport.
However, recent controversies surrounding her political affiliations have dramatically turned public opinion against her.

Political controversy: Patrick’s support of Donald Trump
Danica Patrick has never hidden her political affiliations, most notably her support for former US President Donald Trump. Over the past few years, she has openly supported Trump’s presidency and policies, frequently sharing her views on social media and actively attending political rallies.
Most notably, Patrick attended and spoke at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania last year, clearly aligning herself with the former president’s policies, a move that caused considerable backlash among F1 fans.
The criticism intensified after Patrick publicly shared photos of herself alongside Trump on social media, further cementing her alignment with controversial political stances. Despite significant backlash from sections of the fanbase, Sky Sports maintained her position within its broadcast team, choosing to separate her personal views from her professional analysis.

Recent incident: The Trump-Zelensky meeting controversy
The latest escalation of criticism began following Patrick’s reactions on social media to the highly publicised meeting between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Patrick’s tweets on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, expressed strong political opinions and sparked a fresh wave of condemnation from Formula One fans around the world. Fans argued that her political views crossed a line and questioned her suitability to represent Formula One, a sport that has increasingly championed inclusivity, human rights and political neutrality.
Patrick’s continued open political support and explicit commentary sparked a significant outcry, reigniting long-standing debates about the intersection of sports broadcasting and personal political advocacy.

Fans react: Outrage and calls for Patrick’s dismissal
In response to Patrick’s recent political posts, there was a widespread backlash on social media platforms. Fans vented their frustration, arguing that her continued presence undermined Sky Sports’ reputation and contradicted the inclusive, politically neutral stance that Formula One strives to uphold.
Many accused Sky Sports of ignoring the wider implications of Patrick’s political affiliations, suggesting that the broadcaster had failed to consider the impact on its diverse global audience.
On Twitter, Instagram and Reddit, hashtags such as ‘#SackDanicaPatrick’ and ‘#RemovePatrickNow’ quickly gained momentum, with thousands of fans calling on Sky Sports to reconsider its analyst line-up. The sheer volume of criticism signalled a significant issue that Sky Sports could no longer ignore, especially with the new F1 season fast approaching.

The petition: A powerful show of fan unity
To make matters worse, a petition calling for Danica Patrick’s immediate removal from Sky Sports appeared online and quickly gained immense support. The petition’s creators argued passionately that Patrick’s political beliefs were in direct conflict with Formula One’s core values of diversity, equality and global unity.
Within days, the petition had garnered over 40,000 signatures, highlighting the depth of fan discontent and presenting Sky Sports executives with a difficult and sensitive dilemma.
The petition’s statement reads: “Formula 1 is a sport built on diversity, inclusion and global harmony. Danica Patrick’s outspoken political views, particularly those aligned with divisive political figures, are at odds with these core values. Sky Sports has a duty to uphold these principles and by retaining Patrick it is failing in its responsibility to its international audience”.

Sky Sports’ silence: An uneasy position
In the midst of this brewing controversy, however, Sky Sports has remained conspicuously silent. The broadcaster has yet to make an official statement or respond directly to the petition, even as fans grow increasingly impatient.
Internally, however, sources suggest that the broadcaster is under intense pressure to balance professional integrity with respect for employees’ personal freedoms. Analysts say Sky Sports must tread carefully as the resolution of this controversy could set important precedents regarding broadcasters’ tolerance of political expression by their staff.

Patrick’s response: Unfazed and unapologetic
Amidst the growing calls for her firing, Danica Patrick appears unfazed, continuing to publicly express her political views and standing firmly by her right to personal political expression.
Her recent social media activity remains unapologetic and steadfast, reinforcing her belief that her role as an analyst should not limit her right to express her personal views.
Despite escalating criticism, Patrick has shown no sign of retracting her comments or apologising. Her steadfast position is further polarising public opinion and intensifying discussions about the acceptable limits of public figures expressing personal politics within the sporting industry.
Impact on the image of Formula 1: A critical moment
This controversy comes at a sensitive time for Formula One, a sport increasingly conscious of its global image and the values it promotes. In recent years, Formula One has been proactive in promoting initiatives in the areas of sustainability, racial equality and political neutrality, particularly under the stewardship of Liberty Media.
Patrick’s political stance puts Sky Sports – and, by extension, Formula 1 – in an uncomfortable position, raising questions about the consistency, credibility and responsibility of broadcasters to uphold values consistent with those promoted by the sport itself.
As the new season approaches, Sky Sports faces a critical decision that goes beyond an individual’s political views, potentially affecting the wider public perception of its brand and, indirectly, the values that Formula One claims to uphold.

MORE F1 NEWS – Hamilton “surprise” data from testing
Lewis Hamilton admits he is still “pinching himself” as he heads towards his first race for the iconic Ferrari Formula One team. Lewis made the controversial switch from his Mercedes home having failed to negotiate the long term deal he wanted with the silver arrows.
Ferrari have dome everything in their power too ensure Hamilton’s induction has been as complete as possible, to the extent the team has used all its ‘filming days’ and testing of previous cars mileage allowance before the season has even begun.
Its more usual for an F1 team to retain some of these testing opportunities for when they deliver a big upgrade during the early part of the season, yet Ferrari believed they were better spent on acclimatising Hamilton alongside his new team mate Charles Leclerc who is in his sixth year with the Maranello outfit…READ MORE ON THIS STORY

Danica Patrick is not a hypocrite and what happened to freedom of speech? She is not the only one who voiced her opinion so why attacking her? Just leave her be and let her do the job that she likes to do.
Freedom of speech? Are you an idiot. Read and understand the US constitution. And Sky is not the US government. Anyone can be fired by a private company for any reason. You are a moron. She totally sucks at commenting, same comments all the time, no insight, asks dumb questions.
She is a scourge on F1. Sky sack her
I think she is great, don’t listen to whining fans.
Patrick only got as far in racing as she did because she is female with little talent. Her only real talent has been as pit pussy and not a very attractive one at that.
I agree with your assessment- this a bunch of bs!!!
“Fans” wanting SkySports to fire Danika are nothing but sissies that break out in tears when someone disagrees with them.
Sky sports doesn’t necessarily need to fire Danica just demote her to a more appropriate off camera position that is more suitable for a woman of her abilities such as sleeping with all the losers after every race.
Sky sports canvassing for the removal of an employee, based solely upon their personal politics, seems much more suspect than what the race winning ‘most successful female driver’ likes to do and say in her free time.
Irrespective of the professional qualities of the lady in question, or her political or any other views, there are some appalling comments on here that I hope the “judge” will see fit to move on
I too am offended by the nasty and crude comments expressed by the neanderthals. They don’t represent the image F-1 wants to promote!
Is this a parody?
She is a “Has Been”. She brings nothing to the table. If I never hear from her again it would be too soon.
Danica Patrick’s involvement with US politics is overshadowing Sky Sports and formula ones ethos of inclusivity and being non-political.
Hamiltons involvement in Politics were overshadowing all F1 when BLM burnt cities in merica, but nobody asked if Hamilton should be banned. small mind, but that is how the woke think they do it it is fine, ANYONE else does, and it is the worst evil.
If Patrick can be sacked for agreeing with the majority of American voters… Then Hamilton should be sacked for expressing his political opinions!
Aaaah, but there’s the rub. Perhaps his politics suit their divisive agenda.
how is this different from Hamilton supporting BLM, at the height of BLM burning of private property? Maybe they should have fired Hamilton for bringing politics into sport.
Can’t you see the difference in the reaction? The whole team colour changed in support of that political agenda.
But now apparently the whole community, which waxes endlessly about acceptance and diversity, is so appalled because of this ‘most successful female driver’s’ personal politics.
