Scuderia Ferrari makes another key driver decision ahead of new season – In a significant move just weeks before the start of the new Formula One season, Scuderia Ferrari has confirmed another important driver decision. The legendary Italian outfit have secured a familiar face to strengthen their squad, bringing in a household name to serve as a reserve driver behind their star duo of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
On Wednesday morning, Ferrari officially announced that Zhou Guanyu would be joining the team as a reserve driver for next season. The move ensures the 25-year-old Chinese driver will remain in F1, despite losing his full-time seat at Sauber after a challenging 2024 campaign.

A return to familiar territory for Zhou Guanyu
For Zhou, this appointment is a homecoming of sorts. Long before making his Formula One debut, he was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the Scuderia’s prestigious development programme. He first joined the academy in 2015, receiving support from the Maranello-based outfit as he climbed the junior racing ladder.
However, he left Ferrari’s ranks in 2018 in favour of Renault’s driver development programme, ultimately paving his way into F1 with Alfa Romeo (Sauber) in 2022.
After three seasons at the top of the sport, Zhou has now returned to Ferrari, albeit in a different capacity. His F1 journey began alongside veteran Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo, where he showed flashes of promise but struggled for consistent results in the fiercely competitive midfield. He scored a total of 16 points in his 68 Grand Prix starts.
Zhou’s best performances came in his debut season, and while he managed to score several points, his results in the last two years have been less encouraging. After finishing 18th in the drivers’ championship in both 2022 and 2023, he had an even more difficult campaign in 2024, finishing 20th. His most notable race of the season was the Qatar Grand Prix, where he scored four valuable championship points – his only score of the year.
Despite these struggles, Ferrari’s decision to bring him back as a reserve driver underlines the team’s confidence in his ability and experience.

Ferrari’s reserve driver strategy for 2025
Zhou’s return to Ferrari also reshapes the team’s reserve driver line-up for the 2025 season. The Scuderia has opted to share the reserve driver duties between Zhou and another former F1 driver, Antonio Giovinazzi.
Giovinazzi, who was a full-time F1 driver for Alfa Romeo from 2019 to 2021, has primarily competed in endurance racing in recent years. Interestingly, Zhou’s arrival in F1 in 2022 came at the expense of Giovinazzi, as the Chinese driver was chosen to replace him at Alfa Romeo. Now the pair will share the responsibility of Ferrari’s reserve role, ensuring the team has experienced back-up options should Hamilton or Leclerc be unable to race.
This dual reserve driver approach gives Ferrari added security. Zhou’s relatively recent race experience in modern F1 cars, combined with his familiarity with Ferrari’s simulator from his Academy days, makes him a valuable asset. Meanwhile, Giovinazzi’s long association with the team and his endurance racing expertise completes the package.

A changing landscape in the F1 reserve driver market
Zhou’s move to Ferrari is part of a wider reshuffle of reserve drivers in the F1 paddock. Zhou’s departure from Sauber also left his former team-mate Valtteri Bottas without a seat for 2025. However, Bottas was quick to secure a new role with Mercedes, stepping into the position previously held by Mick Schumacher.
The move highlights the competitive nature of the F1 driver market, where experienced drivers must remain adaptable to continue their involvement in the sport. While a reserve driver role is not a guaranteed route back to a full-time seat, it does provide an opportunity to stay connected to the paddock, work closely with teams and be available for potential future openings.

Zhou’s Perspective: Staying in F1 for the future
Even before the official announcement, Zhou had made it clear that his priority was to remain in Formula One in some capacity. Speaking in Las Vegas towards the end of last season, he admitted that his future in the sport was uncertain, but expressed his desire to secure a reserve role.
“I want to stay in F1, in a reserve role, but I don’t know exactly where I will go,” Zhou said at the time.
Now, with his position at Ferrari confirmed, he has secured his place in the F1 ecosystem for at least another season. While his ambitions are likely to extend beyond a reserve role, this move keeps him within reach of a potential return to a full-time race seat should the opportunity arise.

Looking ahead: What it means for Ferrari and Zhou Guanyu
For Ferrari, the addition of Zhou as a reserve driver adds depth to their line-up as they embark on a new chapter with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton. With a high-profile driver pairing in Hamilton and Leclerc, Ferrari will be looking to challenge for race wins and potentially the championship. Having experienced reserve drivers such as Zhou and Giovinazzi provides vital insurance in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
As for Zhou, this role allows him to stay involved in F1 while he considers his options for the future. He will have the opportunity to work with Ferrari’s state-of-the-art simulator, gain insights from one of the most prestigious teams in motorsport and potentially position himself for a return to racing should the opportunity arise.
While his immediate F1 future lies as a reserve driver, history has shown that reserve roles can sometimes lead to unexpected race seats. Whether through injury replacement, a sudden vacancy or strong performances in testing, Zhou will be looking to make the most of his new opportunity with Ferrari.
For now, his focus will be on contributing to Ferrari’s success behind the scenes, while keeping his racing aspirations alive.

MORE F1 NEWS – FIA late 2025 regulation change suits nobody
The FIA came under fire on a number of fronts during the 2024 season with the drivers’ union forced to pen only their second ever open letter to F1’s governing body. The strongly worded document demanded the president of the association treat the F1 competitors with more respect following his accusation they were behaving like ‘rappers.’
“We urge the FIA president to consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise,” the statement read. “Further, our members are adults. They do not need to be given instructions by the media about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewellery or underpants.”
Yet this was just one of the controversies which rocked F1 as FOM finally came out with their response to the FIA giving Andretti the green light to become the eleventh team on the grid. In an incoherent statement, the operating company owned by the F1 commercial rights holder appeared to suggest amongst other strange requirements that Andretti would be incapable of becoming a font running team quickly…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
