‘Under pressure’ as Toto Wolff reflects on Mercedes’ approach with Hamilton’s replacement during a day to remember for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s F1 debut – 30 August 2024 will go down in Formula One history as a pivotal moment. On that day, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, affectionately known as Kimi in the paddock, made his long-awaited debut during an official Friday practice session at the iconic Monza circuit.
Climbing into George Russell’s Mercedes, the 18-year-old rookie got his first taste of competing against the Formula One elite. While his session ended prematurely with a crash in the Parabolica corner, it wasn’t the accident that left a mark – it was his exceptional telemetry data.

Despite the crash occurring on just his second fast lap, Antonelli’s performance sent ripples through the paddock. The data revealed that the teenager was hitting astonishing speeds, outpacing even reigning world champion Max Verstappen by more than 10km/h in some corners.
This raw display of talent raised eyebrows and showed the immense potential that Mercedes had nurtured in its junior programme.

Antonelli’s flash of brilliance
Three months later, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff still speaks with admiration of Antonelli’s brief but electrifying stint that Friday at Monza.
In an interview with Austria’s *ORF*, Wolff said: “He did an incredible lap in Monza, which unfortunately only lasted until the Parabolica. But if you look at the overlays, it was unbelievable.”
Antonelli’s performance revealed both his remarkable talent and his inexperience. While his cornering speeds demonstrated a fearless approach, they may also have been indicative of a rookie pushing the boundaries.
Wolff acknowledged this dichotomy: “His incredible Monza data may also be evidence of his inexperience, because he probably pushed to the limit while others were a little more routine and moderate.”

The challenge of managing expectations
As Mercedes prepares Antonelli for a full-time F1 seat in 2025, Wolff is aware of the challenges ahead. The team must strike a balance between nurturing Antonelli’s talent and managing the inevitable growing pains that come with a young driver’s ascent to the pinnacle of motorsport.
“We’re all always thinking about whether we’re making the right decisions,” admitted Wolff.
“Antonelli’s decision is certainly a courageous one and also an experiment for us.”
To ensure his long-term success, Wolff stressed the importance of managing expectations for Antonelli, the team and the fans.
“There will be moments where we’ll tear our hair out because of mistakes, and then there will be moments of brilliance where you can see this talent coming through. But the main thing is to develop next year.”
Wolff also stressed the importance of 2026, when Mercedes hope to be at the forefront with a new engine formula.
“2026 is very important for us as an engine manufacturer. And we want to have it ready by then,” he explained.

Learning from Monza
One of the key lessons Antonelli learned from his debut at Monza was the effect of pressure. Racing on his home circuit in Italy, the young driver faced intense scrutiny from fans and the media.
Wolff admitted that Mercedes had miscalculated by placing Antonelli in such a high-pressure environment at the same time as announcing his promotion for 2025.
“We made a mistake in Monza by putting him under pressure in Italy and at the same time announcing that he will drive for us in 2025,” admitted Wolff.
The heightened expectations seemed to weigh heavily on Antonelli, who pushed his car to the limit. His crash in the Parabolica – now officially known as the Alboreto corner – was partly blamed on him pushing his Pirelli tyres too hard and losing grip.
Wolff suggested that even experienced drivers like Verstappen could have matched Antonelli’s corner speeds if they had approached the session with a similar all-or-nothing mentality.

More measured approach in Mexico
After his dramatic debut, Antonelli returned to the cockpit for a second Friday practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix. This time the young rider took a calmer and more calculated approach.
Over the course of 19 laps, he focused on consistency and handling of the car rather than sheer speed. At the end of the session Antonelli was 12th on the timesheet, just over a second behind George Russell.
This performance, while less eye-catching than his Monza exploits, marked a crucial step in Antonelli’s development. It reflected a growing maturity and understanding of the demands of Formula One, traits that will be essential as he prepares to take Lewis Hamilton’s seat in 2025.

A star in the making
Despite the challenges of his early outings, Antonelli’s potential remains undeniable. Wolff described the feedback from those who have worked with the young Italian in the junior series as overwhelmingly positive.
“Everyone who has worked with him describes Antonelli’s talent as exceptional,” said Wolff.
Experts believe that Antonelli’s debut at Monza, while imperfect, may one day be remembered as the start of a storied career. His ability to combine raw speed with a willingness to learn suggests that he has the foundations to succeed at the highest level.

Replacing a legend
Antonelli faces the daunting task of succeeding Lewis Hamilton, one of the most decorated drivers in Formula One history. The transition marks a new chapter for Mercedes as the team shifts its focus to nurturing a new generation of talent. Wolff is open about the challenges this will bring, but remains optimistic about the team’s decision.
“There will be moments of frustration and moments of brilliance,” Wolff reiterated.
“But we’re committed to his development and we believe he has the potential to be a champion.”

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Andrea Kimi Antonelli. His journey from an impressive – if imperfect – debut at Monza to a full-time seat at Mercedes represents a bold gamble for the team.
But with the right support and a focus on long-term development, Antonelli has the tools to establish himself as a future F1 star.
For now, the story of Andrea Kimi Antonelli is one of potential, perseverance and the pressure that comes with stepping into the spotlight. If his Monza debut is any indication, F1 fans could be witnessing the early stages of a remarkable career.
