Hamilton denied Ferrari test

No early test opportunity: Why Lewis Hamilton can’t test for Ferrari yet – Formula One transitions between seasons not only with dramatic championship finishes, but also with changes in team line-ups and preparations for the coming year. This off-season period is often marked by post-race test drives, allowing drivers changing teams to get a first feel for their new machines.

This year, however, while outgoing Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz will test his 2025 Williams car shortly after the season finale in Abu Dhabi, incoming Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton will not enjoy the same privilege.

Despite the buzz surrounding Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, the seven-time world champion will not be allowed to drive the iconic red car during the post-season tests.

This has raised questions, especially as drivers such as Sainz and others who change teams will be taking to the track in their future cars. Insights from Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur and Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff shed light on the matter.

Post-season testing: Looking to the future

The Formula One season will end on 8 December 2024 with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. As is customary, the days following the final race are dedicated to Pirelli tyre testing, allowing teams to evaluate new compounds for the coming season.

Unofficially, these sessions are also a valuable opportunity for drivers joining new teams to familiarise themselves with their future cars.

Among the drivers expected to take part is Carlos Sainz. Although still officially contracted to Ferrari for the remainder of 2024, he will don Williams gear and drive the FW46 around the Yas Marina circuit on 10 December.

Similarly, Esteban Ocon, who joins Haas, and Nico Hulkenberg, who will drive for Sauber/Audi, will use the tests to familiarise themselves with their new teams’ cars.

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, will remain on the sidelines, unable to drive a Ferrari until the official start of his tenure in 2025.

Fred Vasseur: Prioritising professional courtesy

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has explained why Sainz was allowed to participate in the Williams test while Hamilton was denied the same opportunity. Speaking at a media session during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, Vasseur expressed his gratitude for Sainz’s contribution to Ferrari and stressed the importance of ending their partnership on amicable terms.

“The thing with Carlos is that I wanted to thank him for the collaboration.I don’t want to block him or anything like that,” explained Vasseur. “He has done a very good and very professional job with us this season.

Sainz, who faced the challenge of not having his contract renewed, earned Vasseur’s respect for his professionalism during a difficult season.Allowing Sainz to test for Williams was Ferrari’s way of showing their appreciation and ensuring a smooth transition.

The contrast with Hamilton’s situation

Asked why Hamilton was not given the same opportunity, Vasseur deflected the question back to Mercedes: “You’ll have to ask Toto about that. He acknowledged that the situation was very different from Sainz’s move to Williams, which posed no direct threat to Ferrari.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff echoed this sentiment, insisting that the decision was influenced by contractual and commercial obligations linked to Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes.

Unlike Sainz’s move to Williams, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is to a direct competitor, making any early testing arrangements difficult.

Mercedes’ perspective: Contractual obligations and a big farewell

Toto Wolff explained why it was not possible for Hamilton to test Ferrari’s car ahead of schedule. “Fred didn’t ask…”

“And I think it also makes a difference when you go to Williams,” said Wolff, emphasising that testing with a non-competitive team like Williams carries less weight than with a rival like Ferrari.

Mercedes have also carefully planned Hamilton’s farewell activities, which include sponsor commitments and celebrations of his historic tenure with the team.

“We have contractual agreements with the sponsors.”

“We have a farewell for Lewis and there are a lot of activities planned,” revealed Wolff.

The departure of a star driver like Hamilton after such a long and successful partnership requires a carefully managed transition. Both parties seem keen to honour their contractual obligations and ensure a dignified end to their association.

Hamilton’s understanding of the situation

Hamilton himself seems to have taken the situation in stride. Wolff recounted a brief discussion with Hamilton about the possibility of testing the Ferrari car early.”We talked about it briefly and he said, ‘I don’t think it’s going to work out,'” Wolff explained. “And I said, ‘Yeah, I don’t think so either.'”

Despite the logistical and contractual hurdles, Hamilton’s lack of early testing is unlikely to dampen his enthusiasm for the new chapter in his career. Nor are Ferrari worried about the delayed start to their partnership with Hamilton.

Looking ahead: Hamilton’s first outing with Ferrari

Although Hamilton won’t be able to drive the Ferrari during the December test, fans won’t have to wait long to see him in action for the Scuderia. The early pre-season tests in 2025 will mark the official start of Hamilton’s journey with Ferrari, giving him plenty of time to familiarise himself with the team and the car before the new season begins.

In addition, Ferrari have plans for Hamilton to familiarise himself with their operations even before the official pre-season tests. A private trip to Ferrari’s own Fiorano test track in the 2022 car is reportedly in the works, giving Hamilton a taste of the iconic brand’s facilities and systems.

A logical but emotional divide

The contrasting approaches of Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton highlight the nuanced dynamics of F1 team changes. While Sainz’s amicable move to a non-competitive team allows for an early test, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari represents a shift in the competitive balance, requiring greater caution from all parties.

For Ferrari, the decision not to push for an early test for Hamilton reflects respect for contractual obligations and the spirit of fair competition. For Mercedes, it underlines the importance of celebrating Hamilton’s legacy while maintaining professionalism during his transition to a rival team.

As F1 prepares for a new era, Hamilton’s delayed debut in red only adds to the anticipation of the 2025 season. For now, the wait continues, leaving fans to imagine what lies ahead for one of the sport’s most celebrated drivers at one of its most storied teams.
