Why Binotto ditched Schumacher

Last Updated on November 7 2024, 10:20 am

Mick Schumacher was a “strong candidate” but rejected for Sauber seat but Binotto explains decision to pass on the German in favour of rookie Gabriel Bortoleto – In a final blow to Mick Schumacher’s bid for a Formula One comeback, Sauber announced on Wednesday morning that the former Haas F1 driver would not be joining the team for next season.

The decision leaves Schumacher without a seat on the F1 grid in 2025 and effectively ends the comeback hopes of the young German driver and son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. Sauber CEO Mattia Binotto has explained the reasons behind the team’s decision to opt instead for Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, who will join the team in 2025.

Schumacher’s F1 comeback hopes dashed

After losing his Haas seat at the end of 2022, Schumacher had been working as a reserve driver for Mercedes, remaining active in the F1 paddock and maintaining hopes of a return.

Sauber’s second seat, alongside experienced compatriot Nico Hulkenberg, was Schumacher’s last realistic shot at a 2025 seat. Instead, Sauber have chosen to place their future in the hands of 20-year-old talent Gabriel Bortoleto, a move that signals the team’s commitment to fresh talent as they prepare for Audi’s long-awaited entry into Formula One in 2026.

Binotto’s assessment: Schumacher was a “strong candidate”.

In a press conference, Mattia Binotto acknowledged Schumacher’s abilities, stating that he was “definitely a strong candidate” for the seat. Schumacher’s familiarity with the F1 circuit, coupled with the added attraction of having a German driver to tie in with Audi’s forthcoming partnership, could have made him an attractive choice.

“Mick would certainly have been a good choice,” said Binotto, referring to Schumacher’s appeal and potential to fit into the team’s long-term vision.

Binotto, who took over as Sauber CEO this year after a storied tenure as Ferrari team principal, added that Schumacher’s strengths and weaknesses were well known to the team. Schumacher had spent two years with Haas, gaining valuable experience but also facing challenges that ultimately led to his departure.

According to Binotto, Sauber’s decision was not necessarily a dismissal of Schumacher, but rather a clear endorsement of Bortoleto’s potential.

Sauber decides to invest in youth

Ultimately, Sauber’s decision seems to be rooted in their long-term strategy, with a focus on nurturing and developing young talent. Gabriel Bortoleto’s recent rise through the junior ranks of motorsport has caught the attention of teams and fans alike.

The Brazilian won the Formula 3 title in 2023 and has continued his momentum in Formula 2, where he currently leads the standings with two races remaining in the season. The decision to sign Bortoleto signals Sauber’s confidence in his ability to translate his success at junior level into competitive performances at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Binotto spoke highly of the rookie’s promise, stating, “Gabriel has already shown in the junior classes that he has everything it takes to be a winning driver.”

Binotto described the forthcoming partnership with Bortoleto as a journey to success, underlining Sauber and Audi’s commitment to building a new legacy.

“Together with Gabriel, we are on a journey to success and will form a joint force to shape a new era for Audi in motorsport,” he added. The choice reflects a vision to lay the foundations for the team’s transformation ahead of Audi’s arrival, rather than relying solely on established names.

Audi’s German heritage

The prospect of fielding an all-German line-up with Schumacher and Hülkenberg was undoubtedly tempting, especially as the team prepared for Audi’s entry into the sport.

Audi’s acquisition of a stake in Sauber has fuelled expectations that the team will seek to strengthen its German identity as it prepares for 2026, which would have made Schumacher a logical choice. However, Binotto’s comments suggest that aligning with Audi’s arrival does not necessarily mean focusing exclusively on national representation.

Instead, the team seems determined to find a mix of experience and fresh talent. Nico Hülkenberg’s return to Sauber brings an experienced driver to the team, providing stability and leadership, while Bortoleto offers the team the chance to nurture a young driver whose career trajectory is in line with the team’s ambitious plans.

By cultivating Bortoleto’s skills alongside Hülkenberg, Sauber hopes to create a team dynamic that can be the backbone of their future success.

Gabriel Bortoleto: A rising star on the horizon

The decision to sign Bortoleto reflects Sauber’s focus on securing a promising driver who has shown exceptional talent early in his career. At just 20 years of age, Bortoleto has already shown consistency and composure in the junior categories, qualities that are crucial for success in Formula One.

Bortoleto’s success in Formula 3, where he won the championship in 2023, followed by his leading position in Formula 2, has marked him out as one of the brightest prospects in the sport.

As Sauber looks to invest in youth and prepare for Audi’s entry, the signing of Bortoleto is both a commitment to the future and a strategic move to align the team’s long-term goals with fresh talent.

What’s next for Mick Schumacher?

The future remains uncertain for Schumacher. After serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes, Schumacher’s path back to a full-time F1 seat has faced numerous obstacles. Now, with Sauber’s decision, Schumacher is left without a clear opportunity to return to the grid in the near future.

There may still be opportunities for Schumacher within motorsport, be it endurance racing, Formula E or other competitive series, but a return to F1 in the short term looks increasingly unlikely.

The decision to move on marks a difficult moment in Schumacher’s career, but he is not without support. Schumacher’s work with Mercedes as a reserve driver has given him a valuable perspective on the sport, and he remains connected to the F1 ecosystem. The possibility of a future F1 role, or even in a management position, could still be on the horizon for the young German driver.

Sauber’s roadmap with Audi in sight

Sauber’s decision to partner with Bortoleto signals a commitment to a fresh and forward-looking approach, a strategy that coincides with Audi’s imminent debut in Formula One. The German automotive giant’s entry in 2026 promises to bring resources, expertise and technology that could enhance Sauber’s position within the sport.

By nurturing Bortoleto as a home-grown talent, Sauber aims to create a cohesive team atmosphere that is ready to embrace Audi’s presence and compete at the highest level.

Bortoleto’s decision demonstrates a clear alignment between Sauber’s current leadership and Audi’s broader vision for the future. With Bortoleto, Sauber is not just filling a seat, but investing in a driver who embodies the team’s ambitions and growth strategy.

Looking to 2025 and beyond

With Bortoleto on board, Sauber has taken a significant step in reshaping its team dynamics and competitive aspirations. As 2025 approaches, the Formula One grid is set to witness a new wave of talent, and Bortoleto will be at the centre of Sauber’s push to establish itself as a serious contender. Alongside Hülkenberg, Bortoleto will have the opportunity to learn and grow in a stable environment that encourages driver development and innovation.

The decision to bypass Schumacher may be disappointing for fans and followers of the Schumacher legacy, but Sauber’s commitment to a younger generation reflects a pragmatic and forward-thinking approach. In choosing Bortoleto, Sauber has set its sights on nurturing the next wave of talent, a move that is in line with its overarching mission to become a competitive force with Audi in the years to come.
