Marko reveals Verstappen’s challenges and Red Bull’s road to victory as the thrilling battle for the 2024 Formula One World Championship intensifies – The race for the Formula One World Championship has become a nail-biting showdown this year, with the resurgence of McLaren adding a new level of complexity to the title battle. Despite Max Verstappen’s current lead, McLaren’s remarkable form in recent races has posed a significant challenge to Red Bull’s dominance.
In an interview with the German press, Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko shared his thoughts on the competition, Verstappen’s performance and the challenges facing the RB20, and revealed the team’s plans to regain their edge.

Red Bull’s comeback strategy
Helmut Marko was cautiously optimistic about Red Bull’s performance, highlighting recent improvements.
“We saw an upward trend in Singapore,” Marko explained, underlining Red Bull’s efforts to close the gap. And just in time for the upcoming race in Austin, new components for the RB20 are expected to boost the team’s performance. These upgrades have been extensively tested over the past few weeks at the team’s Milton Keynes base.
“I’m hoping that the data from the simulation and wind tunnel will match the results on track,” said Marko, emphasising the importance of a seamless transition from the laboratory to the track.
However, Marko admitted that the RB20 has some worrying issues.
“There needs to be more speed and the car needs to work in a wider operating window,” he noted. Recently, the RB20 has become unpredictable, with small deviations from its ideal set-up causing dramatic swings in performance.
“That caused fluctuations and the balance in the car wasn’t there,” Marko explained, alluding to the inconsistency that has hampered Red Bull’s dominance.
With the upcoming upgrade package, the team hopes to address these weaknesses. Marko is hopeful for the future, saying, “I expect it to work. The first changes in Singapore had a positive effect. They were the first step.”

The rise of McLaren: a new threat
While Red Bull concentrate on their own development, the meteoric rise of McLaren has become an undeniable factor in the championship battle.
The team, led by the dynamic driving duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have won four of the last six races, making them a formidable rival. Marko acknowledged McLaren’s prowess, stating, “At the moment, McLaren is fast on every track, with every tyre and at every temperature.”
Marko didn’t hesitate to admit that the Norris-Piastri pairing is “stronger at the moment” than Red Bull’s own driver line-up of Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. This frank assessment speaks volumes about the quality of competition in this year’s championship, where every little advantage can be decisive.
However, Red Bull are far from conceding defeat. Marko pointed out that the next few tracks on the calendar could play into Red Bull’s hands.
“The upcoming tracks will be better for the RB20,” he said. Marko also pointed out that other teams, such as Mercedes and Ferrari, have the potential to be race winners depending on the circuit.
“It could be a four-way battle,” he added, suggesting that the championship could be decided by more than just two teams.”‘
One key advantage Red Bull still have is Max Verstappen himself.
“The big advantage is the Max factor: if the cars are the same, he can deliver extra performance,” Marko said confidently. Verstappen’s ability to get more out of his car than most drivers will be crucial as the title race heats up.

Verstappen’s battle with the RB20’s shortcomings
Marko sheds light on Verstappen’s struggles with the RB20, highlighting the Dutchman’s unique preferences and needs when it comes to the car’s handling. According to Marko, Verstappen’s driving style requires a car with a “really strong rear”.
A car that understeers is a nightmare for him. What has bothered Verstappen most this season is the unpredictable nature of the RB20, oscillating between understeering and oversteering.
In F1, predictability is often the key to a driver’s confidence. Without it, even the most talented drivers can struggle to get the most out of their cars. Marko explained: “What bothered [Verstappen] the most was that the car was oscillating between understeering and oversteering and was unpredictable for him.”
Once Red Bull resolve these issues and make the RB20 predictable again, Marko believes Verstappen will return to his dominant form.
“Max will be driving in his own class again,” Marko assured fans, confident that Verstappen’s skill combined with an improved car will give Red Bull the upper hand once again.

Red Bull’s world championship outlook
Helmut Marko is well aware that Red Bull cannot afford to rest on their laurels if they are to secure another world title. While McLaren are on the rise, Mercedes and Ferrari are also capable of winning races, making the road to the title a tough one. Despite this, Marko remains confident in Red Bull’s ability to bring the championship home.
“We have to win again on our own,” Marko said bluntly, recognising that the team must give Verstappen a car that allows him to maximise his abilities. If Red Bull can iron out the kinks in the RB20, Marko believes Verstappen will be unstoppable.
“He can push a car to the limit,” Marko insisted, praising Verstappen’s unparalleled ability.
However, Marko admits that the road to victory won’t be easy.
“McLaren are fast everywhere and have two top drivers,” he said, underlining the difficulty of the challenge ahead. Nevertheless, Red Bull remains hopeful.
“We expect to maintain this relatively comfortable lead and possibly even extend it,” Marko concluded optimistically.

Red Bull’s final push for glory
As the Formula One World Championship enters its decisive stages, the competition is fiercer than ever. McLaren’s rapid rise, coupled with the potential resurgence of Mercedes and Ferrari, has put immense pressure on Red Bull and Verstappen. However, with new upgrades on the way and a clearer understanding of the RB20’s weaknesses, Helmut Marko remains optimistic that Red Bull can stay ahead in the title race.
Much will depend on Verstappen’s ability to unlock the full potential of his car and Red Bull’s ability to deliver a car that meets his exacting standards. If they can, the Max factor could be just enough to secure another championship for the Dutchman and Red Bull.
In what promises to be a thrilling finale, all eyes will be on the remaining races as Verstappen, Norris and their respective teams battle it out for motorsport’s ultimate prize.

MORE F1 NEWS – Russell takes over from Schumacher in disaster F1 test
Tyre test ends prematurely for Mick Schumacher – Mick Schumacher’s recent Formula 1 tyre test in France came to an unfortunate and premature end. The 25-year-old had been invited by Pirelli, the official tyre supplier to Formula 1, to test a new rain tyre compound at the historic Magny-Cours circuit, a former Grand Prix track.
Ironically, however, the heavy rain proved too much for the test session to continue and Schumacher’s run was abandoned after just 29 laps. While the teams are hard at work preparing their cars for the rest of the F1 season, tyre manufacturers like Pirelli are using these sessions to develop and refine their products for future races. Schumacher’s run in the Mercedes was part of that development.
A disaster for Mick Schumacher who is desperately attempting to rack up Formula 1 mileage in order to keep his race career hopes alive. Mercedes race driver George Russell will now…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
