“It would be a good comparison with Nico Hülkenberg,” said Marko, pointing out that Schumacher’s involvement would have been relatively risk-free. Given that Audi’s F1 programme won’t officially start until 2026, there would be plenty of time to assess Schumacher’s performance.
“If his performance isn’t right, you can always make a change before 2026,” Marko added, stressing that there would be flexibility to reassess the driver line-up if necessary.
For the Red Bull advisor, Schumacher’s potential was worth the risk. His argument was clear: by bringing Schumacher on board, Sauber/Audi could have nurtured a young, motivated driver with plenty of potential, while maintaining a long-term perspective as the team gradually gears up for Audi’s official entry into Formula One.

But Marko didn’t leave Schumacher without hope. In fact, the Austrian motorsport consultant had some pragmatic advice for the young driver: turn to endurance racing.
“He should concentrate on the endurance races, where he has been very successful, and do that,” Marko suggested, referring to Schumacher’s previous successes in endurance racing. Schumacher has competed in various series outside of F1, including the FIA World Endurance Championship, and has shown promise in the discipline.
For Marko, a career in endurance racing could provide Schumacher with a new chapter in motorsport where he can find both success and enjoyment.
“If he stays in motorsport, he needs to find something he enjoys, but where he also has a chance of winning,” Marko concluded.
